The Springbok Sevens 'A' side slowly warmed to their task in the pool stage of the Rugby Africa Sevens at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius on Saturday, with victories over Nigeria, Zambia and Burkina Faso.
The South Africans began the tournament with a 17-5 victory over Nigeria's Black Stallions in a scrappy, error-strewn opening match where they struggled to find their rhythm or assert themselves on their opponents.
It took one moment of brilliance – a dummy pass from the energetic Ricardo Duarttee, or 'Tricky Ricky' – to send Joel Leotlela over in the right-hand corner for the only score of the first half.
Flyer Sebastiaan Jobb had an almost immediate impact off the bench in the second stanza, his converted try after 11 minutes stretching SA's lead to 12-0.

The Nigerians hit back two minutes later to reduce the lead to 12-5. It was no more than their endeavour deserved, even if they were guilty of schoolboy handling errors at times.
Masande Mtshali had the final say for the Springbok Sevens 'A' side. He dotted down in the right-hand corner after some good inter-passing as the favourites seemed to have finally woken from their slumber.
There would be no further additions to the scoreline but Philip Snyman's charges will have been left with plenty to ponder going into the second match of the tournament.
The South Africans started the second pool match against Zambia far better than the first, a foot in touch denying Grant de Jager the early score. But a few minutes later, they made the most of turnover ball on the Zambian tryline for Joubert Schoeman to score.
The Zambians levelled the score at 7-7. But their joy was short-lived, after Schoeman rose high and collected the ball off the kick-off to canter over the whitewash.
The game seemed headed for a thrilling second half after Zambia fought back to draw level again before half-time (14-14).
However, the class of the South Africans finally told. Mfundo Ndhlovu showed great strength, shrugging off tackles and powering over the line as the Springbok Sevens 'A' side eventually ran out 33-14 winners.

Adnan Beganovic sets sights on top-eight finish for TS Galaxy

TS Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic will be aiming for a third consecutive Top 8 finish after a strong debut season in charge. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix TS Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic has made it clear that his side should no longer be spoken about in relegation terms, as they prepare to open their Betway Premiership campaign against newly promoted Durban City on Sunday. The Rockets finished last season inside the top eight, and the Serbian tactician wants to build on that momentum rather than dwell on survival battles of the past. The Mpumalanga-based club were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 by Sekhukhune United last week. 'I think this season I don't want to talk about surviving. I don't want to talk about the same issues,' Beganovic said. 'I saw exactly what we have, and we analysed everything, and we just use what we have in that moment." TS Galaxy really had a terrible second half on Saturday, everything was going well till half time. I hope they get few exciting signings and they can compete for top 5. — 039🚭 (@_Richard92) August 7, 2025 Video Player is loading. We want to put our goals high, we want to fight for a top-eight spot because of everything we did in the last six, seven months. 'We started this pre-season, and we want to just add on everything we did last season. I know it can't be easy, and we will need time to teach our new players our vision, our philosophy and our model — how we want to look, how we want to play this season. Until now, I'm happy with what I saw in pre-season.' Galaxy's home opener against Gavin Hunt's Durban City will be an early test of their readiness, particularly with the visitors eager to make a mark in their first-ever top-flight campaign. The Rockets will also head into the match with one of their standout performers from last season still in the squad — despite transfer speculation. If Kaizer Chiefs didn't include a sell-on clause in Ndamane's transfer to TS Galaxy, it speaks volumes about the club's current state of management. — Ndabezitha👑 (@LehlohonoloSho8) August 5, 2025

'Deliver immediately': Kaizer Chiefs legend warns Silva

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma has given his thoughts on Amakhosi new forward Flavio Silva. The 29-year-old joined Chiefs in July and went to the Netherlands last month with the club for their pre-season tour. Despite firing blanks in Europe, Silva showed a glimpse of brilliance in the Toyota Cup against Asanta Kotoko two weeks ago. Mbesuma feels the Kaizer Chiefs new man needs a bit of work to improve and get the goals for his new club. 'As a team, Kaizer Chiefs – especially the players playing up front – have a lot to improve on,' the former Zambian international told KickOff . 'At a club like Chiefs, there is always pressure on the players. Fans come to the stadium to see goals, and the expectation is high. There's always pressure because the culture of the team is to win trophies. This pressure will remain until the team starts winning trophies consistently.' 'So, any new player must deliver immediately.' 'The new striker has shown some good moments, but I want to see him make more runs into the box and spend more time there. He needs to be more forceful inside the box. 'During the match at Moses Mabhida, there were moments when he was making runs away from the box and towards the wings,' Mbesuma said. Golden Arrows out to spoil Siwelele's return as Richards Bay open against Marumo Gallants

Golden Arrows Manqoba Mngqithi is settling back in KZN following his return to the club. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Golden Arrows will look to dampen Siwelele FC's top-flight return party when the sides meet in the Betway Premiership at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday night (8pm). The soon-to-be Bloemfontein-based side's readiness remains something of a mystery. Siwelele have not played any competitive or friendly matches during the build-up to the new season, leaving their form and tactical sharpness open to speculation. While the club's history is rich with moments of promise, the absence of recent match data makes it difficult to predict how they will shape up on opening day. That uncertainty could play into the hands of Arrows, who head into the season determined to make a strong start after falling short of their top-eight ambitions last term. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi's side have worked hard to sharpen their squad during pre-season and will aim to collect early points to set the tone for the campaign. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ The lack of recent meetings between these two clubs adds further intrigue, with both sides relying solely on pre-season preparations and tactical adjustments rather than head-to-head insights. In a match fuelled by unpredictability, the first goal could prove decisive. Earlier in the day, Richards Bay begin their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign against Marumo Gallants at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi. Kick-off is set for 3pm. The Natal Rich Boys have their eyes on back-to-back top-eight finishes and will hope to turn their home ground into a fortress once more. Having been eliminated from the MTN8 in pre-season action, Ronnie Gabriel and Papi Zothwane's charges can now channel all their energy into the league. Gallants, meanwhile, are entering a new era under French coach Alexandre Lafitte, who takes over from Abdeslam Ouaddou after a solid 10th-place finish last season.
