Tamil Nadu has the distinction of being a frontrunner in exports, in electronics, textiles, leather, and automobiles. Simultaneously, the state has witnessed shrinking agricultural lands and increasing urbanisation, which has exerted stress on its agricultural exports.
The area under horticultural crop cultivation such as vegetables, fruits, spices, aromatic crops, medicinal crops, flowers and plantation in the state is 16 lakh hectares contributing a total production of about 235 lakh tonnes. In the food grains segment, production of 130 lakh tonnes comprising rice, millets and pulses is targeted for the current financial year.
In exports, the state's share remained less than 5% over seven years, though it rose to the 7th position in 2024-25 from 9th in 2022-23.
During 2024-25, TN recorded $1.5 bn exports in the agriculture sector, as per data available with the NIRYAT portal of the Union ministry of commerce and industry. While Madhya Pradesh was just ahead at $1.7 billion, Karnataka stood fifth with an export value of $2.2 billion in the last fiscal (FY25).
While Tamil Nadu might not be in a position to compete with states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in the quantum of agricultural exports, it has unique, high-quality GI-tagged agricultural produce.

The state has several unique agri, horti and floricultural offerings that can cater to the growing global demand, including turmeric, banana, tea, mangoes, jasmine, among others. Turmeric is among the most sought-after spices across the world, and TN is the third largest producer of the commodity in India. Popular for its utility in the manufacturing of curry powder, turmeric is well known for its medicinal value too.
However, just 15% turmeric is exported from its hub in Erode that holds GI tag for Erode Manjal (Erode Turmeric).
S Chandramohan, director and group president finance, TAFE, and past chairman of CII Tamil Nadu, says there is a potential for value addition. 'Turmeric is used in Germany for various applications such as promoting skin health, supporting the immune system, aiding digestion and promoting general health.'
He adds, 'Stakeholders in the agro space could consider tie-ups with enterprises specialising in Ayurvedic solutions.
Adhering to quality control and communicating regional requirements to the farmers to ensure compliance will go a long way,' he said. It's noteworthy that Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of bananas in India. About 30 varieties are grown in more than one lakh hectares across 12 districts mostly concentrated in Trichy, Theni, Tuticorin, Pudukkottai and Coimbatore.
Manikutty Subramanian, director of Trichy-based TN Banana Producer Company says hardly 5% of banana from the state is exported. 'We are mainly exporting the G9 variety of banana due to its low price. Of late, our native varieties such as Nendran and red banana are also seeing an interest among consumers in UAE and Saudi Arabia. Nendran is also exported in the form of dry banana, a ready to eat value added product with a shelf life of three to six months.
We are urging farmers to tap the global market as it will double their income through foreign exchange. We believe that banana exports can move up to 20% over the years if there is special focus on increasing exports,' he added.
Tamil Nadu must focus on creating value-added products, inspire local entrepreneurs to build homegrown premium brands, launch Tamil Nadu agri-products on global e-commerce platforms, promote them in airports, trade fairs, and food expos.
Anil Kumar SG, founder and CEO of Chennai-headquartered agri-value chain enabler, Samunnati says, 'Imagine Tirunelveli or Theni mango juice in sustainable glass bottles, Pollachi coconut bites sold in airport lounges, or Nilgiris tea-infused chocolates/pastries crafted for global connoisseurs.
There should be partnerships with global brands to enter new markets,' he said.
A category yet to be well-tapped in exports is flowers. TN is the largest producer of flowers in India, with a share of 20%, produces about five lakh tonnes of flowers per annum. Of this, cut roses are exported to Europe and east Asian countries, while jasmine is flown to the Middle East and UK. R Murthy, president of Flower Growers Association of TN says. 'A floriculture park must be established at Kodaikanal on the lines of industrial parks for food and other manufacturing sectors.
This park will be a game changer in exports because flowers can be processed and packed depending on the requirements of various countries,' he adds.

KTR appears before ACB again in Formula-E Racing fund misuse case

Hyderabad, June 16 (UNI) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Monday in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities related to the Formula-E car racing event. The hearing began at 1000 hours at the ACB office in Banjara Hills. KTR arrived at Telangana Bhavan by 0900 hours and later proceeded to the ACB office accompanied by his legal counsel, Ramachandra Rao. The ACB had issued a summons to him on June 13. This marks KTR's second appearance before the ACB in the case. He was previously questioned for nearly six and a half hours on January 9. The case pertains to the alleged misappropriation of government funds during the BRS regime to support the Formula-E race in Hyderabad. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, KTR said, 'I have been summoned by the ACB to appear for investigation on Monday at 1000 hours in the Formula-E race case, where Rs 44 crore was transferred from bank to bank, and the money is very much in the account of FE. As a law-abiding citizen, I will attend and fully cooperate with the ACB officials.' According to the FIR filed by the ACB, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) allegedly transferred funds amounting to Rs 44 crore to London-based Formula E Operations (FEO) in violation of established procedures. The payment was reportedly made as the state's share for sponsoring the second edition of the Formula-E race in Hyderabad. While the first edition in early 2023 was sponsored by the private firm Ace Nxt Gen, the company is said to have declined to support the second edition. Subsequently, KTR, who was then Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD), allegedly directed senior officials to ensure that HMDA covered the costs. ACB officials claim that this was done without following due process. The ACB has already questioned several key individuals, including former MAUD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar, and representatives from Ace Nxt Gen and FEO. Meanwhile, the BRS has strongly criticised the investigation, calling it politically motivated. Party leaders have demanded a fair and transparent probe, alleging that the case is being used as a tool for a political vendetta. Through a post on the social media platform X, KTR expressed strong displeasure against the Congress government. He stated that the ongoing enquiries, commissions, and what he described as political harassment by the Congress party would not deter them. KTR affirmed that these actions would not stop the BRS from exposing the government's alleged failure in implementing the promised six guarantees. He further accused the Congress of deceiving the public with what he termed "420 promises and declarations," and asserted that no matter how many conspiracies are hatched, they will not succeed in silencing the BRS. Tata Motors shares slide 5% after JLR flags flat cashflow, lower margins for FY26

Shares of Tata Motors slipped as much as 5.2per cent on Monday to ₹674.70 on BSE after Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), its UK-based subsidiary, flagged weaker financial performance for the current fiscal year, triggering market jitters. The premium carmaker expects its EBIT margin for FY26 to range between 5per cent and 7%, significantly lower than the 8.5per cent margin reported in the previous fiscal. The company also projected free cash flow to be "close to zero" this year, compared to the robust £1.5 billion it generated last year. While JLR management said it is targeting a return to 10per cent EBIT margins and a pickup in free cash flow in FY27 and FY28, it did not provide a definitive timeline for achieving those targets. For Tata Motors, JLR's performance is critical. In FY25, the luxury car unit accounted for 71per cent of Tata Motors' revenue and contributed 80per cent of the group's overall profitability. Despite strong volumes, JLR's average revenue per unit remained flat year-on-year, staying above £70,000. Amid broader headwinds in the premium car market during FY25, JLR maintained its leadership. The company said it 'outperformed the market and maintained its No.1 position in the premium segment in May.' However, Moody's Ratings affirmed the automaker's Ba1 corporate family rating (CFR) with a positive outlook, while upgrading the ratings of its UK-based subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc (JLR). Moody's raised JLR's corporate family rating to Ba1 from Ba2 and its probability of default rating (PDR) to Ba1-PD from Ba2-PD, reflecting the improving credit profile of both Tata Motors and its luxury vehicle arm. "The affirmation reflects the sustained strengthening in TML's consolidated credit profile driven by gross debt reduction and earnings expansion, which are accelerating deleveraging even as the global automotive industry faces challenging conditions," says Kaustubh Chaubal, a Moody's Ratings Senior Vice President. "Concurrently, we have upgraded JLR's backed senior unsecured instrument ratings to Ba1 from Ba2. The outlook remains positive," a company filing said, quoting the rating agency. According to Moody's Ratings, Tata Motors Ba1 Corporate Family Rating (CFR) is a reflection of several key credit strengths. The rating agency highlights TML's robust global presence in the luxury automotive segment through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc (JLR, Ba1 positive). Moody's also points to TML's leading market position in India across commercial vehicles (CVs) and its growing share in passenger vehicles (PVs). Furthermore, Moody's credits TML's commitment to creditor-friendly financial policies that effectively balance growth with financial discipline, thus supporting a solid credit profile. The rating agency also acknowledges a long-standing, strategically important relationship with its parent, Tata Sons. This relationship, according to Moody's, results in a one-notch uplift to TML's rating due to the expectation of extraordinary support, should it be required. Moody's also notes that TML is currently in the process of demerging its CV operations into a separately listed entity with mirror shareholding. Post-demerger, which Moody's expects to be effective in October, the rated entity will encompass all PV and PV-related businesses, including 100per cent ownership of JLR. The rating agency anticipates that following this transaction, JLR will contribute over 90per cent of TML's consolidated EBITDA, underscoring the increasing convergence of their credit fundamentals. .. Tata Motors shares have declined 28per cent over the past 12 months, though they have gained 75per cent over the last three years. The company's current market capitalisation stands at ₹1,48,943 crore.

Wind energy centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat: India becomes 3rd largest maker of renewable energy; wind capacity hits 51.5 GW in a decade

On Global Wind Day 2025, Union minister for new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi stressed on the importance of wind energy and said that it is crucial to India's clean energy plans and crucial to its ambition of becoming a global manufacturing hub. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Bengaluru, he said India needs reliable energy, from wind, solar or other sources, to become a global manufacturing hub. "Wind energy is not a component of our renewable energy strategy, but it is at the heart of it and at the centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat ," he said. The minister said that India has achieved 51.5 GW of wind capacity, marking a 150% increase over the last decade, and is now exporting turbines and components globally. The country has set its sights on 100 GW of wind energy by 2030, including 30 GW from offshore projects, 'backed by strong policy reforms and a robust manufacturing ecosystem.' The minister said India has set clear and ambitious goals — to get 50% of its power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and to become net-zero by 2070. He stressed that wind energy is not just a part of the country's renewable strategy, but lies at its core and is key to building an Atma Nirbhar Bharat. Live Events He also underlined the three issues the sector must now tackle: integrating wind with solar and storage for round-the-clock power, reducing tariffs from the current Rs 3.90 per unit, and boosting manufacturing efficiency to compete globally. Highlighting PM Modi's vision, Joshi said the goal is to use renewable energy to power India's manufacturing sector, while conventional energy continues to meet household needs. India is currently the world's fourth-largest country in installed wind power capacity and the third-largest renewable energy producer overall. India's manufacturing capacity is increasing, and it will continue to rise. "No one had thought that India would become the third largest manufacturer of renewable energy in 10 years, but today it is a reality," said the minister. To unlock the full potential of the wind sector, Joshi outlined five focus areas: expanding into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching the offshore wind sector with leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; integrating wind with storage for firm green power; modernising the grid using AI-based forecasting; and strengthening local manufacturing across the wind value chain. Joshi also released two key reports, the Wind Energy Roadmap and Manufacturing Roadmap, to serve as frameworks for India's clean energy journey. 'These documents reflect our strategic vision and our collective resolve to build a strong, self-reliant wind ecosystem,' he said. The event also saw the recognition of top-performing states in wind capacity addition: Karnataka led with 1,331.48 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,136.37 MW) and Gujarat (954.76 MW). Union minister of state for new and renewable energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, and Karnataka's energy minister, KG George, were also present at the event. India's wind ambitions align with its global climate commitments, including the five-point 'Panchamrit' pledge made at COP26 in Glasgow. These include reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity, cutting emissions by 1 billion tonnes, and reducing emissions intensity by 45%, all by 2030.
