Quality Over Quantity
The area under horticultural crop cultivation such as vegetables, fruits, spices, aromatic crops, medicinal crops, flowers and plantation in the state is 16 lakh hectares contributing a total production of about 235 lakh tonnes. In the food grains segment, production of 130 lakh tonnes comprising rice, millets and pulses is targeted for the current financial year.
In exports, the state's share remained less than 5% over seven years, though it rose to the 7th position in 2024-25 from 9th in 2022-23.
During 2024-25, TN recorded $1.5 bn exports in the agriculture sector, as per data available with the NIRYAT portal of the Union ministry of commerce and industry. While Madhya Pradesh was just ahead at $1.7 billion, Karnataka stood fifth with an export value of $2.2 billion in the last fiscal (FY25).
While Tamil Nadu might not be in a position to compete with states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in the quantum of agricultural exports, it has unique, high-quality GI-tagged agricultural produce.

The state has several unique agri, horti and floricultural offerings that can cater to the growing global demand, including turmeric, banana, tea, mangoes, jasmine, among others. Turmeric is among the most sought-after spices across the world, and TN is the third largest producer of the commodity in India. Popular for its utility in the manufacturing of curry powder, turmeric is well known for its medicinal value too.
However, just 15% turmeric is exported from its hub in Erode that holds GI tag for Erode Manjal (Erode Turmeric).
S Chandramohan, director and group president finance, TAFE, and past chairman of CII Tamil Nadu, says there is a potential for value addition. 'Turmeric is used in Germany for various applications such as promoting skin health, supporting the immune system, aiding digestion and promoting general health.'
He adds, 'Stakeholders in the agro space could consider tie-ups with enterprises specialising in Ayurvedic solutions.
Adhering to quality control and communicating regional requirements to the farmers to ensure compliance will go a long way,' he said. It's noteworthy that Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of bananas in India. About 30 varieties are grown in more than one lakh hectares across 12 districts mostly concentrated in Trichy, Theni, Tuticorin, Pudukkottai and Coimbatore.
Manikutty Subramanian, director of Trichy-based TN Banana Producer Company says hardly 5% of banana from the state is exported. 'We are mainly exporting the G9 variety of banana due to its low price. Of late, our native varieties such as Nendran and red banana are also seeing an interest among consumers in UAE and Saudi Arabia. Nendran is also exported in the form of dry banana, a ready to eat value added product with a shelf life of three to six months.
We are urging farmers to tap the global market as it will double their income through foreign exchange. We believe that banana exports can move up to 20% over the years if there is special focus on increasing exports,' he added.
Tamil Nadu must focus on creating value-added products, inspire local entrepreneurs to build homegrown premium brands, launch Tamil Nadu agri-products on global e-commerce platforms, promote them in airports, trade fairs, and food expos.
Anil Kumar SG, founder and CEO of Chennai-headquartered agri-value chain enabler, Samunnati says, 'Imagine Tirunelveli or Theni mango juice in sustainable glass bottles, Pollachi coconut bites sold in airport lounges, or Nilgiris tea-infused chocolates/pastries crafted for global connoisseurs.
There should be partnerships with global brands to enter new markets,' he said.
A category yet to be well-tapped in exports is flowers. TN is the largest producer of flowers in India, with a share of 20%, produces about five lakh tonnes of flowers per annum. Of this, cut roses are exported to Europe and east Asian countries, while jasmine is flown to the Middle East and UK. R Murthy, president of Flower Growers Association of TN says. 'A floriculture park must be established at Kodaikanal on the lines of industrial parks for food and other manufacturing sectors.
This park will be a game changer in exports because flowers can be processed and packed depending on the requirements of various countries,' he adds.

Chinese school under fire after piling Rs 1.21 crore cash on stage as reward for top university admit
A private school in China has come under fire after offering a one million yuan (Rs 1.21 crore) cash reward to a graduate admitted to the prestigious Tsinghua University. In early August, Dajiang International School in Guigang, a small city in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2025. At the event, several students who secured spots at top universities received large cash prizes from their alma mater, South China Morning Post reported. Other students were also rewarded: one admitted to Zhejiang University and another to Hong Kong University each received 150,000 yuan (Rs 18.18 lakh), while a graduate heading to Huazhong Agricultural University in Hubei province was granted 10,000 yuan (Rs 1.21 lakh). Viral videos of the ceremony fueled heated debate online. A school employee told local media that the cash awards vary depending on the university's rank and are adjusted annually. In 2022, Dajiang awarded half a million yuan to students entering either Peking University or Tsinghua. Average-level university admits typically receive around 3,000 yuan (Rs 36,000). But the policy soon drew official scrutiny. On August 12, the Guigang Municipal Education Bureau confirmed to Jiupai News that it had ordered the school to halt the practice. 'The state discourages schools from publicizing gaokao scores in this way,' said an unnamed official. The incident highlights how highly Chinese schools value admissions into Tsinghua and Peking University—ranked 17th and 14th respectively in the 2026 QS World University Rankings—and use them as benchmarks of academic success. In some schools, teachers themselves receive cash bonuses if their students are admitted to these elite institutions. In July, a separate high school in Jiangxi province stirred controversy after a teacher scolded three students online for not applying to Tsinghua or Peking despite qualifying scores. The students chose lower-ranked universities offering majors with better career prospects instead. Education experts argue that schools' fixation on elite university admissions—and the financial incentives tied to them—distorts priorities. Xiong Bingqi, a Shanghai-based scholar, wrote in the Beijing News that Dajiang's award scheme was nothing more than 'a marketing initiative to promote itself and attract more elite students.' 'Schools should not use high awards to instil the utilitarian perception that studying leads directly to financial returns,' Xiong warned, SCMP reported. 'They should care about the long-term development of each individual student and guide them to shape their own life plans.'

GST 2.0 To Benefit Common Man, Small Businesses And Farmers, Says FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Last Updated: The finance minister presents to GoMs from states the Centre's blueprint for the next generation of GST reforms, describing it as a step towards making India Aatmanirbhar. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said the GST rate rationalisation, which may reportedly include reducing the GST structure to two slabs of 5% and 18%, will provide relief to common man, farmers, the middle class and MSMEs, while ensuring a simplified, transparent and growth-oriented tax regime. 'This would enhance affordability, boost consumption and make essential and aspirational goods more accessible to a wider population," Sitharaman said, according to a post by the finance ministry on X. Sitharaman also said the new GST regime will make people self-sufficient and boost growth in manufacturing and MSMEs. The Union finance minister also presented to GoMs from states the Centre's blueprint for the next generation of goods and services tax (GST) reforms, describing it as a step towards making India Aatmanirbhar while committing to build consensus with states in the coming weeks. Speaking to Groups of Ministers (GoMs) on rate rationalisation, insurance taxation, and compensation cess, Sitharaman said 'emphasised that the proposal by the Central Government is with a vision to usher in the next generation of GST reforms in India's journey towards becoming #AtmanirbharBharat." 'During the meeting, the Union Finance Minister emphasised that the proposal by the Central Government is with a vision to usher in the next generation of GST reforms in India's journey towards becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat," Sitharaman said during the meeting. According to a PTI report citing a source present at the meeting, the Union finance minister's address lasted about 20 minutes, during which she explained the rationale for reforms and urged states to support the transition. The rate rationalisation GoM is scheduled to meet again on August 21. Two-Slab GST Structure The three GoMs will over two days deliberate on the Centre's 'next-gen' GST reforms under which tax will be levied at 5 and 18 per cent rates. A special 40 per cent rate has been proposed on 5-7 items, including sin goods. Currently, GST is levied at 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with luxury and demerit goods in the highest bracket and many food and essential items either exempt or taxed at 5%. At the GoM meeting, finance minister said, 'The next-generation GST stands on three pillars: structural reforms, rate rationalisation, and ease of living." Exemption for Insurance Premiums For Individuals Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, who is also the convenor of insurance GoM, said the Centre has proposed exempting health and life insurance premiums from GST for individuals, to which some states differed. Currently, such premiums attract 18% GST. 'The Centre's proposal is clear that the insurance sector's individual and family (policies) should be exempt from GST. This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the Council," Choudhary told reporters. The panel, comprising ministers from 13 states including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, will submit its report to the GST Council by October-end. Union Minister of State for Finance, Chief Minister of Goa, Deputy CM of Bihar and Finance Ministers of States in the three GoMs were also present at the meeting. Fiscal Impact and Next Steps According to an SBI Research estimate, the proposed changes could lead to a revenue loss of about Rs 85,000 crore annually, and about Rs 45,000 crore in the current fiscal if implemented from October 1. The research note said the effective weighted average GST rate has already fallen from 14.4% at inception to 11.6% in 2019, and may drop further to 9.5% post-reforms. The GoM on compensation cess is also deliberating on the levy's future after repayment of loans taken to compensate states during the pandemic. top videos View all Once the GoM reports are finalised, the proposals will be placed before the GST Council, which includes representatives from the Centre and all states.
