Carnegie Mellon going to World Pipe Band Championships
It's the first time the university's Pipes and Drums band will compete on the international stage, going to the European Pipe Band Championships in Perth on Aug. 9 and the world championships in Glasgow on Aug. 15.
CMU says it's home to the world's first undergraduate degree in bagpipe performance. The university traces its Scottish roots back to founder Andrew Carnegie.
Bagpipe-playing twins Alexandra and Elizabeth Knox, who graduated in May, will be among those representing the Pipes and Drums band abroad. They learned the bagpipes from their father, also a CMU alum.
The Pipes and Drums band, which was founded in 1939, is fresh off wins from the Chicago Highland Games and the American Pipe Band Championships in Norfolk, Virginia.
The world championships will be attended by 35,000 people in person, and about 500,000 are expected to watch the broadcast on the BBC.
"I think for 99% of them, going this year will be their first time ever — not only going to the world championship, but even going to Scotland — so it's a big opportunity. It's exciting to share that with them," Andrew Carlisle, the director of piping, said in a quote on CMU's website.
The Knox twins said everyone in the band — from students to staff to alumni — has put in the work to get them to the competition.
"You can really hear it in kind of the sound as everyone gets geared up for this competition," Alexandra Knox said on CMU's website. "All the effort really shows. Regardless of how the band does at this competition, I'm super proud of how far everyone has come in the past couple years."

Spidey Swings Through Midtown in Explosive New Set Videos From SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY — GeekTyrant
Things are heating up on the set of Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man: Brand New Day , and fans are getting an exciting new look at the web-slinger in action. New photos and videos from the Glasgow-based shoot reveal Spider-Man swinging through a bustling Midtown Manhattan during what looks like an adrenaline-pumping chase sequence. With production in full swing, we see Spidey back in full costume, racing through the city and leaping over a massive explosion. The chase appears to center around an armored vehicle, which is believed to be linked to The Punisher's growing arsenal. Practical stunts are clearly a priority for Cretton. Just days earlier, images surfaces of Spider-Man perched atop the same armored vehicle, attempting to tear his way in. Rumors continue to swirl about the scene featuring Frank Castle locked onto The Scorpion's trail, with Spidey caught in the middle. This shift to a street-level narrative has fans excited, especially after concerns that Brand New Day might revisit the multiverse plotline and reunite Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield. But that doesn't seem to be the case. "I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home , that for as sad as it is that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life, we are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories him being a proper Spider-Man," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently explained. "Him being by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with, for lack of better terms, street-level crime, as opposed to world-ending events." Feige continued: "So when you do that, you say, okay, who are the other street-level characters that we've never seen him interact with? And of course, I love that The Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic. 'That great cover…I don't want to say too much, but got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie, which is super cool." Although it wasn't Holland in the suit for these stunts, the action gives us a solid idea of what to expect when the actor returns to the role. With Jon Bernthal just wrapping The Punisher Special Presentation in New York, there's a strong chance we'll see him joining the shoot soon. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The cast features Holland, Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Liza Colón-Zayas. The film swings into theaters on July 31, 2026. Until then, check out the latest set footage and photos posted on X and get ready for a web-slinging adventure unlike any we've seen before.

The Very "Strange" Nickname Prince William's Close Friends "Jokingly" Gave to Princess Kate When They First Started Dating

Kate Middleton's romance with Prince William began after the pair met at the University of St Andrews in 2001. After a brief split in 2007, the pair reunited and have been together ever since. When William and Kate first started dating, the Prince of Wales's friends reportedly came up with a slightly "strange" nickname for the royal's new girlfriend. In the book The Making of a Royal Romance: William, Kate, and Harry—A Look Behind the Palace Walls, royal expert Katie Nicholl revealed (via the Daily Mail), "William's friends jokingly refer to the close-knit family as 'the OM Middleton' meaning the 'On Masse Middletons' because they are always together." The close nature of the Middleton family has regularly been discussed, particularly when it comes to Prince William's relationship with Kate's relatives. Majesty magazine editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward previously told Hello! magazine, "The Middletons are a traditional family, which is why William enjoyed being around them so much." During the same interview, Seward also noted, "When things go wrong, they pull together under Carole's direction." The royal expert continued, "She is the matriarch of this family and they all take her advice because they have great respect for their mom." The Prince of Wales even referenced Princess Kate's family during the couple's ITV engagement interview in 2010. "Kate's got a very, very close family," William said. "I get on really well with them, and I'm very lucky that they've been so supportive." William called Kate's parents "really loving and caring and really fun," adding that the "really welcoming" pair had embraced him like "a part of the family." While the nickname Prince William's friends gave to Princess Kate might seem a little strange, it's clear that the Middleton clan really are a close group. Solve the daily Crossword

Tom Holland reveals first full look at Spider-Man's new suit ahead of Brand New Day: "Are we ready?"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. We finally got a first full look at Tom Holland's suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it's already getting Marvel fans excited. The reveal came only a day after the suit was partially revealed in a teaser, which initially gave us some serious early 2000s Spidey vibes due to the raised black webbing. A closer look in the new video is also leading fans to draw comparisons with Andrew Garfield's suit in The Amazing Spider-Man, as both suits have similar details in the arms, a belt illusion at the hip line, and a bigger black spider logo in the chest. It seems like this new suit might be taking inspiration from the previous versions of the webslinger, who starred alongside Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. In a way, it could be an homage to Tobey Maguire and Garfield's characters and the important lessons they taught the MCU's Peter Parker during their adventure together. What is clear is that the new design goes back to the character's comic origins after an MCU era marked mostly by the high-tech suit that Tony Stark gave Peter in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and that can only be a good thing. You can see the suit in the video below, where Holland walks up to the camera and says: "Are we ready?". With filming under way in Scotland and some fan videos leaking details about the film, it was only a matter of time until we saw Holland's new suit. Sony got ahead of the leaks with this official first look, although there might be other suit designs included in the film. We'll have to wait to find out. In the meantime, we've had a couple of major cast announcements this week – Mark Ruffalo is set to reprise his role of The Hulk, making it his first MCU appearance since She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Michael Mando is also coming back as the Scorpion after swearing vengeance against Spider-Man at the end of Homecoming. They are both joining a stacked cast which so far includes Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, following his MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again, and Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role that has fans wildly speculating. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are also set to reprise their roles as MJ and Ned. Directed by Shang Chi helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will pick up from the events of the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw Peter Parker's existence erased from everyone's minds, including his loved ones. An official synopsis is yet to be revealed, but Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said recently that the story will be focused on "street-level crime as opposed to world-ending events." Spider-Man: Brand New Day will land in cinemas on July 31, 2026. For more, here is our complete guide to upcoming Marvel movies and all the projects included in Marvel Phase 6.
