David Hare play starring Ralph Fiennes transfers to the West End
Sir David Hare's play Grace Pervades, starring Conclave actor Ralph Fiennes, is to make its transfer to the West End. The production, starring Fiennes, 62, and Spooks actress Miranda Raison, played at the Theatre Royal Bath between June and July. Directed by Jeremy Herrin, the play tells the story of Victorian stage actors Sir Henry Irving and Dame Ellen Terry and Ellen's children Edith Craig and Edward Gordon Craig – who made their own contribution to the development of British theatre. From April 2026, the play will move to Theatre Royal Haymarket for a limited West End season. Fiennes is performing and directing a selection of plays as part of Theatre Royal Bath's Ralph Fiennes season, details of which were announced earlier in the year. Fiennes first took to the stage at Theatre Royal Bath in 2021 when he performed TS Eliot's Four Quartets – a set of four poems. His other recent theatre work includes Macbeth on tour, Sir David's Straight Line Crazy at the Bridge Theatre and Antony And Cleopatra at the National Theatre. Fiennes is also known for his film work and played Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series and Cardinal Lawrence in the Oscar-winning film Conclave, which led to nominations in the leading actor categories at the Baftas and Academy Awards earlier this year. Further casting for the London production will be announced soon. Tickets will go on sale from mid-September.

The Pulse of the Chinese Warrior Dance: Dance Drama "Odes to Heroes" Sets Beijing Ablaze
BEIJING, Aug. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the dance dramas Awakening Lion and LOONG, the large-scale ethnic dance drama Odes to Heroes, another masterpiece by the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre, was staged at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center from July 31 to August 3, 2025. It was jointly produced by the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, and Guangzhou Cultural Development Group under the guidance of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province. This spectacular performance offered a double feast for both the eyes and souls to the capital's audience. With the intangible cultural heritage "Yingge" at its core, the dance drama has quickly become a cultural sensation in Beijing, resonating deeply with the audience through its profound cultural roots and artistic expression on the modern stage. A Phenomenal Dance Drama Sparkles in the Capital As a blockbuster performance of the 2025 "Tianqiao Dance and Performance Season," Odes to Heroes debuted alongside other acclaimed works such as The Eternal Wave and The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting, captivating the audience with its passionate patriotism and exquisite stage art. Excerpts from the drama had previously been featured in the "Hundred Flowers Welcoming Spring: Spring Festival Gala for the Chinese Literature and Art Circles" and the CCTV's 2025 "Cultures of China, Festival of Spring" Global Chinese New Year Gala. This premiere in Beijing has presented a newly refined version to show the perfect blending of intangible cultural heritage and contemporary spirit. Why Has the Fervor for "Odes to Heroes" Never Stopped? The dance drama Odes to Heroes has ignited lasting fervor nationwide, not only for its top-tier creative team and star-studded cast, but for the emotional and cultural resonance it delivers on stage. Currently, the dance drama has undergone 38 tours in 19 cities across the country. It was further refined in June, evolving with the Yingge dance at its core and the epic history of overseas Chinese as its soul, reimagined through a contemporary lens to tell the epic story of overseas Chinese and their patriotic spirit during the War. As the drama unfolds through striking choreography, symbolic imagery, and a moving narrative of separation, reunion, and self-discovery, it awakens a profound "bloodline awakening" among audiences—a cultural self-confidence and pride in heritage. Blending rich elements of Lingnan culture such as wood carvings, embroidery, iron-branch puppetry, beef balls, oil-paper lanterns, and it's worth mentioning that the theme song of Odes to Heroes is in the Chaoshan dialect rap style. The production bridges tradition and modernity. Each performance becomes a powerful expression of shared memory, identity, and hope—bringing the spirit of Yingge and the voices of generations past and present to life. Curtain Falls and Echoes Remain The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War. To commemorate this historic year, the theatre presents its Lingnan trilogy—Awakening Lion, LOONG, and Odes to Heroes—as a tribute to six decades of artistic excellence. Odes to Heroes honors this immortal history through powerful stagecraft, where the clash of the Yingge mallet and the emotion in "overseas letters" evoke the patriotic spirit of two generations. Following a successful premiere in Beijing, the production has left a lasting cultural impression and rekindled public appreciation for traditional heritage. The theatre will continue telling Lingnan stories through contemporary dance, promoting Chinese culture on the global stage. James Norton says reaction to ‘gross' leaked photos from A Little Life was ‘gratifying'
James Norton says he felt 'gratified' by the backlash to the leaked photos that showed him during nude scenes in the stage adaptation of Hanya Yanagihara's controversial novel A Little Life. The British actor, 40, starred in the lead role as Jude, a character who suffers unrelenting abuse and misfortune both as a child and in adulthood. Critics were divided over the West End production – which ran for three hours and 40 minutes – with some praising Norton's 'dedicated performance' and others calling the play 'deeply unsettling' due to its prolonged depictions of trauma. Following the show's opening at the Richmond Theatre in London in March 2023, illicit photos of the actor during his nude scenes were published by the Daily Mail in print and online. Following an immediate and fierce backlash, the publication removed the images as it was pointed out that the theatre had placed stickers over phone cameras and shared materials telling audience members that filming and photography was prohibited. 'Violated is probably too strong [a word],' Norton told The Guardian when asked how he felt about the leaks. 'My strongest memory is that it was just a bit sad, a bit gross, this idea that it would be framed in a titillating way when the subject matter was so clearly vicious and upsetting. But I think the reaction, generally, was that it was misjudged, which was gratifying.' The Happy Valley actor is next starring in new BBC historical drama King & Conqueror, about the battle between Harold Godwinson (Norton) and William, Duke of Normandy (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) for the English crown. He is also starring in Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight's new Netflix drama House of Guinness, about the dynasty behind the Irish stout. In the same interview, he appeared to express some regret at speaking publicly about his split from former fiancée and fellow actor Imogen Poots during a panel at Glastonbury Festival in June. 'I lost the person,' he told the audience after Annie Mac asked him whether he had been through any big life changes, 'but I also lost the life I was about to lead, the kids we had named, all that kind of stuff.' 'If I'd known there was a journalist in the audience, I probably wouldn't have been so honest,' Norton said. Addressing speculation surrounding his current romantic life, which has linked him to stylist Flora Huddart and pop singer and actor Lily Allen, he remarked: 'Look, I'm a man in London going on occasional dates, meeting people, living my life, and it's kind of no one's business really.' King & Conqueror airs on BBC One and iPlayer from 24 August, while House of Guinness is scheduled for release on Netflix in September. Solve the daily Crossword
