SCIENTISTS have urged people aged 45 to 65 to do a key activity in order to help prevent Alzheimer's disease.
Whether we develop the memory-robbing disease - caused by a building of toxic proteins in the brain - won't always be within our control.
But scientists say that increasing the amount we exercise each week could help protect our brain health.
A new study conducted by experts at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Centre said boosting physical activity during middle age could be particularly beneficial.
In fact, it's been estimated that 13 per cent of Alzheimer's disease cases worldwide could be linked to physical inactivity.
Previous research has shown that exercise reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease by improving cardiovascular and mental health.
More recent studies suggest that physical activity may directly affect how Alzheimer's develops in the brain.
Lead author of the new study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia - doctoral researcher Müge Akıncı - said: 'We conducted a four-year follow-up of middle-aged residents of Catalonia with a family history of Alzheimer's disease.
"We used physical activity questionnaires to assess changes in activity over a four-year period and neuroimaging tests to analyse the effects of exercise on brain structure and function."
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that adults engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.
Participants were classified as adherent if they met WHO exercise recommendations, non-adherent if they exercised less than recommended or sedentary if they didn't exercise at all.
Alzheimer's disease is thought to be caused by the abnormal build-up of proteins in and around brain cells.

One of the proteins involved is called amyloid, which forms plaques around brain cells.
The other protein is called tau, which forms tangles within brain cells.
This process can begin years before symptoms of Alzheimer's begin to appear.
Participants who increased their physical activity to meet WHO-recommended levels showed less beta-amyloid accumulation in their brains than those who remained sedentary or exercised less.
Other ways to reduce your Alzheimer's risk
Be physically active
Regular physical activity is crucial for overall health and may help reduce the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week.
Eat a healthy diet
A balanced diet, potentially including the Mediterranean diet, can help reduce your risk of dementia, as well as other health conditions.
Stay mentally active
Keeping your mind active can strengthen your brain's ability to cope with disease. Engage in activities like reading, learning new skills, or playing brain games.
Manage other health conditions
Maintaining healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels can also contribute to reducing your risk of dementia.
Prioritise sleep
Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night, as sleep deprivation can negatively impact brain health.
Maintain good heart health
Taking care of your heart health, including avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can also lower your risk of dementia and other diseases.
Seek medical advice
If you have any concerns about your health or a family history of Alzheimer's, consult with a healthcare professional.
Researchers also found that participants who increased their physical activity had reduced amyloid deposits in their brain.
Participants who exercises often also had more cortical thickness in brain regions associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Cortical thickness in the medial temporal area of the brain is important for memory, so any thinning or loss of volume can be an early sign of cognitive decline.
Dr Akıncı said: 'Even those who did less physical activity than recommended had greater cortical thickness than sedentary people, suggesting that any amount of exercise, no matter how minimal, has health benefits."
Researchers added that increasing activity over time rather than trying to reach a specific amount of hours a week seemed to benefit participants' brain health.
'Interventions aimed at promoting increased physical activity could be key to reducing the incidence of the disease in the future."

'Well, it's confirmed,' the neurologist bluntly stated, 'Gary's got Alzheimer's.' That was how we received the news in February 2022 of my husband's life-changing diagnosis – he was just 51 at the time, meaning it's classed as young-onset. Gary couldn't believe it and was in floods of tears, saying he didn't want to become a burden and that he'd understand if I wanted to leave him. I simply replied, 'Don't be daft, I'm not going anywhere'. We've known each other practically our whole lives. Gary and I actually grew up on the same street in the north-east English town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. We went to the same primary school, but he was four years above me so we never really spoke. Young onset Alzheimer's tends to affect people in their 40s, 50s and early 60s. Early symptoms include: Confusion and disorientation Forgetting recent events or conversations Finding it harder to make decisions Mood changes Struggling to think of the right word That is, until I was 23 in 1999 when we met properly as adults, while I was working in a local pub and he got a job as the doorman. There was an immediate attraction. Little did I know at the time that he'd told his mates that he was going to make me his girlfriend. But they didn't believe he could, so they supposedly put a £10 bet on! He asked me out on a date soon after and of course I said yes. We've barely spent any days apart from each other ever since. We had our first child, Nathan, in 2001, then got married in 2007. Actually, his best man told the £10 bet story in his speech, then paid up and gave us half of the note each to keep. We had our second child, Isla, in 2011 and Amelia three years later. Gary's always been a fitness fanatic – running and doing CrossFit almost every single day of the week. Throughout it all, he's been a supportive, loving, and very active dad. Our home is full of laughter. Then around eight years ago – when Gary was 47 – I started to notice sporadic odd things happening. He'd come home from work as a self-employed joiner and laugh off not being able to measure a door properly or read a tape measure. Once the lockdown hit in early 2020 and we were all forced to stay home, that's when I really noticed something was wrong. Gary was struggling with tasks he'd usually ace – like building a summer house in our backyard – and he seemed quite down about it all. At the time, it was really difficult to get a doctor's appointment but when we finally did, the GP just thought it was anxiety and depression so prescribed antidepressants. I had a gut feeling that it went deeper than that, but Gary tried them for about three months and gave up when we didn't see any improvement. He was then referred to a neurologist to get an MRI, which actually came back clear. A memory test (which involves remembering words after being distracted) was next and that's when alarm bells started ringing for the GP because Gary really struggled with it. By the start of 2022 – almost two years since we first sought medical help – a lumbar puncture was performed to get the definitive Alzheimer's diagnosis from the neurologist. And it hit us like a tonne of bricks, even though it did cross my mind as a possibility. I tried to put on a brave face, reassuring him that at least we knew what it was. I kept this up when telling our three children, which was really difficult for them to hear – especially our two youngest. In these early days, I naively thought that Alzheimer's is just when you forget things. But the reality has been so much different. At first, Gary was still quite self-sufficient – often making himself poached eggs on toast for breakfast. But now he struggles with tasks around the house that he used to do with ease, like mowing the lawn (it ends up uneven), or even making a bowl of cereal (the different components are confusing), or diluting a glass of juice (he can't quite get the proportions right). Heartbreakingly, about six months ago, he forgot our daughters' names for the first time. They were devastated. They're only 10 and 13. Today, we try to keep a routine as much as possible. I run the bath for him every morning, but he'll ask me where it is. Then I'll make him a coffee before I go to work and his carer, Katy, arrives at 9am. She only used to come for a couple of hours, but a few scary incidents happened that forced us to reevaluate. Once, Gary tried to go for a bike ride, but ended up on the wrong side of a roundabout and down the A1. Another time, he went for a walk and got lost, so Katy now comes for six hours every weekday. Remarkably, Gary still loves keeping fit and going to CrossFit, although he can't train as hard as he used to. We also have a Dementia Adviser from Alzheimer's Society who comes and visits us every few months to see how we're getting on. It's a lifeline to know that they're just a phone call away if we ever need their help. Gary may have changed – he's lost interest in doing a lot of things and is now quite placid – but our family knows deep down that he still loves us all dearly. He also still loves to have a laugh, like chuckling when I fix up his clothes after he puts them on the wrong way: 'Eh, what am I like? How do you put up with us?' Do you have a summer cold or is it the new strain of Covid?

We associate colds and viruses with the winter, and for good reason. Illness spikes in the colder months because it's a time when we huddle indoors, creating the perfect environment for viruses to spread. Then there's the cold air, which dries out our airways and leaves us more vulnerable to catching bugs. Why then are we still getting colds in the summer? The culprits: there are still bugs that can make you sniffily at this time of year, and there's also a new Covid strain beginning to spread in Britain. So, which could be making you unwell and, most importantly, what can you do to avoid it? What's happening with the new strain of Covid? The NB.1.8.1 Covid strain is the latest that health officials are keeping their eyes on. It first emerged in China in January and the World Health Organization (WHO) began tracking it a fortnight ago because of some potentially worrying mutations that the variant carries. 'There is some early indication that it may be slightly better at evading immune responses and antibodies, but this is very early data,' explains Dr Lindsay Broadbent, assistant professor in virology at the University of Surrey. However, the risk posed by NB.1.8.1 remains low, and there is no evidence that it causes a more severe illness or is drastically different to previous strains of the virus, she notes. 'People don't need to be overly concerned,' Dr Broadbent adds. Latest weekly data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) suggests there's been a slight uptick in Covid infections in recent weeks. Of patients tested by their GP, 5.2 per cent tested positive for Covid, up from 4.5 per cent the week before. Since first being detected in the UK in January there have been 13 confirmed cases of NB.1.8.1, though 12 of these were recorded in April and May. For context, around 50 positive tests are currently being sequenced per week. This is when a throat or nose sample that tested positive for Covid is genetically sequenced to determine the variant behind the infection. 'NB.1.8.1 has been detected in small numbers in the UK to date, but international data suggests that it is growing as a proportion of all Covid cases,' notes Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, deputy director of the UKHSA. 'Based on the available information so far, however, there is no evidence to suggest that this variant causes more severe disease than previous variants, or that the vaccines in current use will be less effective against it.' Why are people still getting summer colds? While there is typically a cyclical spike in colds in the winter, that doesn't mean they disappear in the warmer months. In fact, some cold-causing viruses, such as parainfluenza virus Type 3 and enteroviruses (especially coxsackieviruses and echoviruses) are much more common in the summer, says Prof Fidelma Fitzpatrick, head of clinical microbiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and consultant microbiologist in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. Summer colds can also be caused by adenoviruses, which spread year-round but can have peaks in the summer, and rhinoviruses, which is the classic winter cold but is still around in the summer, she says. 'The risk of being exposed to a virus and getting sick depends on lots of factors including our behaviour, the environment and how common those viruses are at any given time,' Dr Broadbent explains. As we enter the summer, people's social calendars tend to fill up with weddings, parties, festivals and holidays, meaning lots of mixing between different groups and generations that wouldn't be together otherwise, says Prof Fitzpatrick. 'There is often more socialising and travel during the summer months, this may mean we are in contact with a lot more people than usual,' Dr Broadbent confirms. Adding to that is that activities that often come with summer festivities – alcohol, a lack of sleep and eating more processed foods – are known to weaken our immune system, making us less equipped to fight off these cold-causing bugs, Prof Fitzpatrick says. Additionally, air conditioning can dry out our nasal passages, which makes it easier for viruses to infect, she notes. It's unclear whether summer colds are on the rise, as the specific viruses that cause them are not tracked. Latest UKHSA data suggests that parainfluenza cases decreased slightly in the week to June 1, though this reflects the trend for all four types of parainfluenza and only Type 3 is specifically linked with summer colds. What are the symptoms to watch out for? Covid continues to cause cold-like symptoms for most people. 'Most infected people have mild to moderate symptoms,' says Prof Fitzpatrick. These include a runny nose, sore throat, congestion, a mild cough, tiredness and headaches. However, people with underlying health conditions face a higher risk of developing more serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, and the illness lasting for longer. It's impossible to know from the symptoms alone whether you have Covid or a summer cold, as the latter also causes a runny nose, low energy, muscle aches, a cough, headache and sore throat, Prof Fitzpatrick says. However, Covid tests are available from pharmacies with prices starting around £2, which can indicate if that virus is to blame. While there are no Covid restrictions in place, official advice recommends trying to stay at home if you catch the virus.

Getting out and about on your bike in mid-life could massively slash your risk of dementia, a study of half-a-million Britons suggests. Experts found those who used cycling as their primary mode of transport cut their chances of developing any form of dementia by almost a fifth compared to those using more sedentary modes of transport such as cars, buses or trains. Active cyclists were also found to be 40 per cent less likely to develop young-onset dementia, a form of the memory robbing disorder that strikes the under 65s and which is on the rise in the UK. For dementia specially caused by Alzheimer's disease, cycling was found to reduce the risk by 22 per cent. The authors of the study, from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, said cycling may be protecting the brain in multiple ways. Firstly, the physical effort of cycling boosts blood flow to the brain, reducing inflammation in the organ, and also helps combat conditions linked to dementia risk like obesity. Secondly, the scientists theorised that cyclists were also enjoying a cognitive boost from the activity, from needing to be aware of hazards on the road to mentally mapping their route, which could also be beneficial to brain health. The researchers also found people who reported frequently cycling had on average, a larger hippocampus, part of the brain crucial to memory and learning. Writing in the journal JAMA Network Open, the authors said their findings could encourage adults to opt for a more active form of transport. 'Promoting active travel strategies, particularly cycling, may be associated with lower dementia risk among middle-aged and older adults, which carries substantial public health benefits by encouraging accessible, sustainable practices for cognitive health preservation,' they wrote. One critical finding of the study was that patients who carried the APOE-e4 gene, a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's, could still benefit from cycling. APOE-e4 is carried by about one in 50 people, including the likes of Avengers star Chris Hemsworth, and has been linked to a ten-fold increased risk of Alzheimer's. Researchers observed that although the benefits of cycling on dementia risk were dampened for people with the gene—compared to those without it—the activity still had some protective affect and be encouraged in this group. The findings were based on an analysis of almost 500,000 Britons with an average of 56 at the start of the study, with the youngest being in their late 40s. This study group, which was split evenly in terms of sex, were asked what form of transport they used most to get around over the previous four weeks. Researchers then followed the health outcomes of the participants for the next 13 years, recording any dementia diagnoses and, if so, what type. At the conclusion, almost 9,000 cases of dementia and 4,000 cases of Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia were recorded. Analysis revealed those who reported cycling as their primary transport method were 19 per cent less likely to develop any form of dementia than those opting for a transport method where they sat down for long periods. The study does have some limitations, which the authors acknowledged. Firstly, is that researchers only used data on four weeks of transport method in their analysis. This means changes participants may have made in the next 13 years to their primary transport method would not have been recorded. Secondly, the research is observational meaning that while a link between cycling and reduced odds of dementia was found it cannot be proven the activity directly influenced the chances of getting the condition and not some other factor. The young-onset dementia finding comes amid a rise of the condition in Britain over the last decade. The latest figures suggest almost 71,000 people in Britain are currently living with this form of dementia, accounting for about 7.5 per cent of all dementia diagnosis. This is a rise of 69 per cent from the figure recorded in 2014. The new study, follows research published last month that found sitting or lying down for long periods could increase your risk of Alzheimer's regardless of how much exercise you do overall. Analysis by the Alzheimer's Society estimates that the overall annual cost of the dementia to the UK is £42billion a year, with families bearing the brunt. An ageing population means these costs – which include lost earnings of unpaid carers – are set to soar to £90billion in the next 15 years. Around 944,000 in the UK are thought to be living with dementia, while the figure is thought to be around seven million in the US. Memory problems, thinking and reasoning difficulties and language problems are common early symptoms of the condition, which then worsen over time. Alzheimer's Research UK analysis found 74,261 people died from dementia in 2022 compared with 69,178 a year earlier, making it the country's biggest killer.
