What's the USC Ice Bucket Challenge? The viral video series, explained

Welcome to FTW Explains: A guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. You may have seen videos of people getting buckets of ice water dumped on their heads and had some deja vu, and also wondered what the heck is going on. That's OK! We're here to help.
That's right, the viral ice bucket challenge is back, and this time, it's for a different cause. When I started seeing these videos go viral again, I wondered if it was 2014, when we wrote a whole bunch of posts about celebrities and athletes getting water dumped on them.
But, nope! It's 2025! And it's back. Let's break down the whole thing:
It's simple. You turn on your phone to shoot a video and someone takes a bucket filled with ice and water and dumps it on your head. You then challenge other people to do it, and they do the same, and it goes on and on. Also, you include a link for donations on your social media post.
I was nominated for the USC Speak your mind ice bucket challenge! But on a serious note… please, if you ask for help — it doesn't make you weak. You are loved — and this world wouldn't be complete without you in it. 🤍 pic.twitter.com/q00ZpakHDg

Back then, it was to bring awareness to ALS. This time, per USA TODAY: "The #SpeakYourMIND ice bucket challenge was created by students at the University of South Carolina's 'Mental Illness Needs Discussion' club, which first posted about the challenge on March 31."
Nearly $300,000 to Active Minds.
There have been discussions about how this is overshadowing the original cause, with the ALS Association posting this:

I wouldn't call it a controversy, but there's discussion online.

Bethenny Frankel Defends Her 'Natural' Body amid Curiosity Over Her Jaw-Dropping 'SI 'Swimsuit Runway Walk

Bethenny Frankel responded to comments about her physique after walking the runway during Miami Swim Week "I look like a train wreck most of the time," she said in a video shared to Instagram Frankel also noted that she has a "good relationship with food" after being "fixated and obsessed" in her early 30sBethenny Frankel is responding to comments about her recent modeling moment. The Real Housewives of New York City alum, 54, took to Instagram to address the discourse around her appearance at Sports Illustrated Swimsuit's Swim Week 2025 runway show in Miami. On the catwalk on Saturday, May 31, Frankel showed off her toned physique in a variety of sexy swim looks, from cheeky bikinis to a leopard-print one-piece. "So I guess we have to discuss what I looked like on that runway because the internet is so fascinated with my age, my weight, my face, my hair," the star said in a video shared on Monday, June 2. In the clip, Frankel sports a black one-piece swimsuit with cutout details. "Listen, I can tell you with great certainty that every woman that was with me on that stage did not look that way two hours prior," she continued, adding that there was "a lot of glam, a lot of contouring and a lot of lighting." Frankel added that she's "never been vain," and that in her normal life, she doesn't wear makeup and prefers "to stay home." "I look like a train wreck most of the time," she said. "That's me. That's what I want." The former RHONY star also claimed she doesn't do crash diets or have a workout routine but rather has a "good relationship with food and exercise," though "it wasn't always that way." She recalled being 25 pounds heavier in her early 30s due to being "fixated and obsessed" and stuck in a loop of binging and restricting. "My body is natural," she later noted. "I don't do weights. And the reason my body is natural is because the exercise I do and have always done for my body is natural. I'll go months without exercise and definitely days without doing anything but I always come back to it." Frankel concluded the video by saying, "I want you to allow yourselves to have, but not beat yourselves up when you do indulge. And I want you to have a good relationship with food and exercise and that doesn't mean being screamed at in a gym or beating yourself up and telling yourself that you have to kill yourself. You don't. It's healthier to just be healthy." ! Frankel's runway appearance comes after she announced her permanent move to Florida last month. Norwegian cruise passenger blown into water by strong winds that caused a ship to detach from pier

A Norwegian Cruise Line passenger was knocked into the water as strong winds caused the ship to blow away from the pier. The passenger was trying to disembark the Norwegian Epic in Catania, Sicily, on May 30, when a strong gust of wind knocked the ship away from the pier, causing the passenger to topple into the water. 'On duty crew members were able to immediately assist the guest from the water and see that they were evaluated by the medical team,' a spokesperson for the cruise line told USA Today. 'It was determined that they sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further examination and treatment,' the spokesperson added. At the time, wind gusts were up to 45 mph, according to AccuWeather. After the poor passenger's fall, the ship stopped allowing passengers to disembark until the weather improved and they could resume docking. 'During this interruption, our crew were actively attending to our guests until they were able to re-embark the ship,' the spokesperson added. 'As always the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority.' The ship is currently on a 10-day excursion that started in Rome with stops in Italy, Greece, Malta and France, CruiseMapper. The incident is hardly the first time wind has caused issues on cruise ships. In February 2024, Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Magic ship struck a pier in Jamaica during high winds. In November 2024, a Royal Caribbean ship suffered severe damage inside after bad weather rocked the vessel as it traveled from Barcelona to Miami. The 'unexpected wind gust' caused the ship to jerk, sending glass bottles smashing and furniture toppling. One passenger was injured in that incident.
