Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday said that the Waqf Amendment Law is not against the Muslim community but is designed to safeguard their interests, particularly those of the poor and marginalized sections. Speaking at a Waqf Reform Public Awareness Programme held at his official residence, the CM urged all communities to work together to dispel misconceptions surrounding the law."The Waqf Amendment Law is being misunderstood by some, but in reality, it aims to bring transparency and ensure that Waqf properties benefit those they were originally meant for," said CM Sai. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent misinformation and to educate people about the real objectives of the legislation.He noted that the Waqf Boards were established with the noble aim of supporting the welfare of the Muslim community, especially the underprivileged and backward groups. "Unfortunately, over the years, a few influential individuals misused the system for personal gain, leaving the truly needy without access to resources meant for them," Sai said.Minister for Tribal and Scheduled Caste and Minority Development Ramvichar Netam added that the amended Waqf laws are intended to empower the Muslim community. "Now, every rupee earned from Waqf properties will be accounted for and used transparently for education, welfare, and improving living standards of the community," he said.

We met the ward officer and told him that you have given permission for slaughter in open space.'She added that the BMC acted according to its guidelines, which prohibit slaughter within 1 km of a religious structure or in an open space. 'We are thankful to BMC for respecting our religious sentiments. Festivals should be celebrated following guidelines,' Satam similar dispute reached the Bombay High Court after BMC denied permission to Maitri Society in Damodar Park, Ghatkopar West. The residents, who have been conducting sacrifices at the same location for years, approached the court. On Friday, the vacation bench directed the society to reapply for permission and instructed the BMC to decide on the application the same Kaif Mujawar, representing Maitri Society residents, said, 'We informed the honourable court that we have been getting permissions at the same location for past many years. Permissions once given are being revoked under political pressure.'In another case, a senior citizen from Kurla (W) filed a complaint alleging illegal animal slaughter in residential premises in Kurla's Naupada, citing hygiene per High Court directions, the BMC has issued guidelines specifying four categories of places where slaughtering is permitted upon obtaining an NOC — designated marketplaces, community spaces, privately owned premises, and housing if a community slaughtering space, including a religious one, is within 1 km walking distance from a housing society, then the NOC cannot be granted.

New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju launched the UMEED Central Portal on Friday, a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. Speaking on the occasion, Rijiju asserted that the portal will bring transparency in managing the Waqf properties. 'The UMEED Portal will add a new chapter in the history of Waqf property management and administration in India. It will not only bring transparency but will also help the common Muslims, particularly women and children,' Kiren Rijiju said. The portal, developed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was officially inaugurated by George Kurian, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, at New Delhi. Calling it a historic step, Rijiju emphasised that the UMEED Central Portal is more than just a technological upgrade. 'It is a symbol of the government's firm commitment to safeguarding the rights of minority communities and ensuring that community-owned Waqf assets are utilised effectively and fairly, for the poor Muslims, for whom it was originally meant,' he added. According to a release, the UMEED Central Portal, short for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995, will serve as a centralised digital platform for real-time uploading, verification, and monitoring of Waqf properties. The portal is expected to introduce greater transparency, accountability, and public participation, thereby transforming the way Waqf assets are administered across India. The release stated the key features of the portal, including creation of a digital inventory with geo-tagging of all Waqf properties, online grievance redressal system for better responsiveness, transparent leasing and usage tracking, integration with GIS mapping and other e-Governance tools and Public access to verified records and reports. Addressing the gathering, George Kurian said the Portal is a long-awaited reform that will curb misuse and bring Waqf administration closer to the people. He added, 'The system ensures that every property is accounted for and used in accordance with the purpose it was endowed for.' The Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar said that he expected the UMEED Portal to become the backbone of digital Waqf governance, thereby ensuring that the Waqf assets contribute meaningfully to education, healthcare, livelihood generation and social welfare, especially for underprivileged sections within the Muslim community. Dhaka, Jun 6 (PTI) Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on Friday said national elections will be held by the first half of April 2026 amid demands from major political parties to hold polls by December. 'Our goal is to prevent future crises. That requires institutional reform. Without ensuring good governance in the institutions directly linked to the electoral process, all the sacrifices made by students and citizens will be in vain,' the 84-year-old Nobel Laureate said. Yunus said his administration took over to carry out three mandates 'justice, reform and elections'. 'I have repeatedly said that this election will be held between December and June next year. The government is doing whatever is necessary to create an environment conducive to elections in the country during this period,' he said. Yunus said he expected the reforms and justice issues would reach an 'acceptable stage' ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan next year, which is to be observed from mid-February to mid-March 2026. The interim government refers to the 'justice' issue as the trial of leaders and officials of deposed prime minister Hasina's now disbanded Awami League and her government that was ousted in a violent movement led by the Students against Discrimination (SAD) on August 5, 2024. Yunus, who was in Paris at that time, flew from the French capital to take charge of the interim administration as its chief adviser three days later. A large part of the leadership of the SAD floated the National Citizen Party (NCP) with Yunus's blessings in February this year. Hasina, who now lives in India, and most of her senior colleagues in the party and government are in jail or fled the country as the interim government accused them of committing crimes against humanity, which may lead to capital punishment. The deposed premier and a number of Awami League leaders and officials of the past government, however, are being tried in absentia in Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal for their role in the crackdown of last year's uprising when hundreds of people were killed. Yunus said with regards to the trial of crimes against humanity – 'which is our collective responsibility towards the martyrs of the July mass uprising – we will be able to see visible progress' ahead of the polls. Yunus's announcement came amid mounting pressure on him to hold the election by December from former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and several other groups while the student-led NCP and several rightwing groups said the polls must wait until the 'reforms' and 'justice' were done. The interim government was visibly in discord with the army as well over the polls with its chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, who on May 21 said the national election should be held by December this year as 'Bangladesh needs political stability'. 'This is only possible through an elected government, not by unelected decision-makers,' The Daily Star and other newspapers quoted him as saying. Yunus on Friday said he was aware that 'there is great interest among political parties and the public' about the election deadline but it was important to remember that Bangladesh was plunged into 'deep crisis since its 1971 independence due to flawed elections'. 'Through repeated accumulation of power through flawed election, a political party turned into a barbaric fascist,' he said in an oblique reference to Awami League, and added that the nation identified as 'criminals' the organisers of those elections. Yunus said a 'truly representative parliament' would be formed in the country 'after a century and a half' with the upcoming polls when a huge group of young people would get the opportunity to vote for the first time in their lives. The interim government chief simultaneously asked all to remain alert against efforts of the ousted regime to hit back with its venom to disrupt the justice, reform and election process.
