Economically weaker sections, women will benefit from registration of Waqf properties: Jagdambika Pal
The BJP MP was the chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament which had examined the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha in August last year and submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 30. Pal's remarks came against the backdrop of media reports that the Minority Affairs Ministry may soon launch the 'Umeed' portal for the registration of Waqf properties under the newly enacted law. New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) Pasmanda Muslims, women and children of the minority community will benefit from the registration of Waqf properties on a centralised platform under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, BJP MP Jagdamika Pal said on Tuesday. 'The name of that law that we passed is Umeed 2025… Now the Umeed Act is going to be launched under which (documents of) all Waqf properties will have to be uploaded (on the Umeed portal) within six months,' Pal told PTI Videos when asked about the likely launch of the portal. According to media reports, the 'Umeed' portal may be launched this week. However, there is no official confirmation on its schedule from the government. Pal said that the registration of Waqf properties on the centralised portal will stop their misuse and benefit economically weaker Pasmanda Muslims, women, children and others in the minority community. With the registration, the Minority Affairs Ministry will have 'complete information' about the total number of Waqf properties in the country, the BJP MP said. 'This will stop the misuse of Waqf,' he said, adding the Waqf properties were illegally sold earlier due to lack of information about them. The BJP leader said that the registration of Waqf properties on the portal will also increase their 'income' as the newly enacted law provides for their audit to be carried out by the auditors appointed by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. 'Its benefit will go to poor Pasmanda Muslims,' he added. The Waqf (Amendment) Act came into force with the Centre notifying it on April 8. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) bill post-midnight on April 3 and April 4 respectively, and President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to it on April 5. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) bill post-midnight on April 3 and April 4 respectively, and President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to it on April 5. New Delhi: The central government is set to launch the UMEED (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act) portal on June 6, aimed at streamlining the registration of Waqf properties across the country. The portal is part of the government's efforts to improve the management and regulation of Waqf properties, which are religious endowments or properties dedicated exclusively for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law. — Zee News (@ZeeNews) June 3, 2025 The UMEED portal will require detailed property descriptions, including dimensions and geo-tagged locations, for registration. The State Waqf Board will oversee the registration process, and properties not registered within the stipulated timeframe of six months will be considered disputed and referred to a tribunal. Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Act, with petitioners arguing that the amendments introduced are designed to "capture" properties through an executive and non-judicial process, amounting to discrimination against Muslims and unwarranted interference in Islamic religious affairs. The Centre has urged the Supreme Court to reject the petitions, arguing that the impugned law does not infringe upon constitutional guarantees. ▶️ मुसलमानों की 'उम्मीद' बनेगा वक्फ ? | LIVE ▶️ शुरू होगा रजिस्ट्रेशन, बढ़ेगी टेंशन ? ▶️ पारदर्शी वक्फ से किसे ऐतराज़ ?#ZeeLive #WaqfBoard #WaqfPropertyRegistration #WaqfProperty #CentralGovernment #UmeedPortal — Zee News (@ZeeNews) June 3, 2025 The launch of the UMEED portal marks a significant step towards improving the management of Waqf properties and ensuring transparency and accountability in their registration and administration. Bengal: Cabinet nod to add 76 more castes to OBC list, make Farakka a subdivision
The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave approval to include 76 new castes to the Other Backward Class (OBC) list and make Murshidabad district's Farakka a new subdivision, an official said. The new castes would be added to the existing 64 ethnic groups on the OBC list, the official said. The recommendations to add more castes to the OBC list were made by the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes (WBCBC). The new subdivision of Farakka will comprise Farakka, Shamsherganj, Suti-1 and Suti-2 blocks which earlier were part of the Jangipur subdivision. 'Due to the growing population, the Jangipur subdivision authorities were facing difficulties in executing administrative work in the vast area. Hence, the decision was taken,' the official said. During the Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, approval was given to create 109 contract-based posts at various administrative levels for the new subdivision, he added. Banerjee, during her recent visit to the riot-hit areas of Murshidabad district, had announced the formation of the new subdivision. On April 12, one Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan Das were stabbed to death in their home in Shamsherganj's Jafrabad locality amid the ongoing communal unrest in the wake of the protests against the new Waqf law. A Muslim youth had also died in police firing the same day. The Cabinet also approved the creation of 336 posts and filling up the vacancies in the departments of home, health, finance, law, and municipal affairs, the official added. The CM also reprimanded Transport Minister Snehashish Chakraborty for not informing her about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between World Bank and State Transport Department recently. The Chief Minister's Office must give green light before any MoU or proposal is signed, she told Chakraborty. — PTI inputs

Govt to launch Umeed portal on June 6 to digitise, regulate Waqf properties
The central government is preparing to roll out a new platform called the 'Umeed' portal on June 6, aimed at improving the management and transparency of Waqf properties across India, according to a report by India Today. The name 'Umeed' stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development. The portal will serve as a centralised system to register all Waqf properties across the country, the report added. Mandatory registration within six months Under the new plan, all Waqf properties must be registered on the portal within six months of its launch. Each registration must include full details such as measurements (length and width) and geotagged locations. Properties that are registered under women's names will not be eligible to be classified as Waqf properties. However, women, children, and people from economically weaker sections will continue to be key beneficiaries of Waqf assets. The State Waqf Boards will be responsible for helping with property registrations. If technical or serious issues prevent registration within the deadline, a one- to two-month extension may be granted. After that, any unregistered property will be labelled as disputed and referred to the Waqf Tribunal for settlement. Linked to New Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 The launch comes soon after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which received presidential assent from President Droupadi Murmu on 5 April. The Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament after considerable debate. Currently, multiple petitions challenging the Waqf Act are pending before the Supreme Court. The central government has asked the court to dismiss these petitions, arguing that the Act is not in violation of constitutional rights. On April 17, the Supreme Court refused to stay the law after the government promised not to enforce some provisions for now. In the most recent hearing on 27 May, the court asked the Centre and other parties to submit their responses. What is Waqf Law? The term 'waqf' comes from the Arabic word waqufa, meaning to detain, hold, or tie up. In Islamic tradition, it refers to a charitable endowment where property is donated permanently for religious or charitable purposes. Once declared as Waqf, the property cannot be sold, inherited, or transferred. A Waqf involves three main roles: The wāqif: the person who donates or dedicates the property. The mawqūf 'alayh: the beneficiaries who receive the support or benefits. The mutawalli: the trustee who manages the property. Major changes in the new law The new Waqf law introduces major reforms in how such properties are managed. It increases government oversight in both managing the assets and handling disputes. A key change is that the decisions of the Waqf Tribunal will no longer be final. Those unhappy with the tribunal's ruling can now appeal directly to the relevant high court within 90 days. This is intended to strengthen judicial supervision and prevent misuse of power by the Waqf Boards or tribunals. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was approved in the Lok Sabha after a 12-hour debate. A total of 288 members voted in favour, while 232 opposed it. During the discussions, the NDA government supported the Bill, calling it beneficial for minority communities, while the opposition labelled it as 'anti-Muslim'. All amendments proposed by the opposition were rejected by voice votes.

Centre to launch ‘UMEED' portal on June 6 to streamline registration of Waqf properties
The Central Government is set to officially launch the Waqf UMEED (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development) portal on 6 June, aimed at streamlining and digitising the registration and management of Waqf properties across India. This follows the enactment of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which received the Presidential assent from Droupadi Murmu on 5 April. According to sources, the UMEED portal has been designed to provide transparent and efficient online registration of Waqf properties. It also offers support services for individuals seeking information on the amended law and their rights or obligations under it. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed in both Houses of Parliament following intense debate and heated exchanges between the ruling coalition and the Opposition. The legislation introduces stricter guidelines and procedural clarity around Waqf property registration and dispute resolution.
