'Use Muslims As Vote Bank, Keep Them Poor': Rijiju Blasts Congress For Opposing Waqf Law
Minister Kiren Rijiju crticised Congress and other parties for opposing Waqf Law. He asserted the Modi government's stance of "appeasement to none, justice to all."
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the Congress and other parties for opposing the new Waqf Bill. He said that unlike BJP, other parties treat Muslim Community as their vote bank. However, he added, Modi government believes in 'appeasement to none, justice to all".
Speaking to the PTI Video, Rijiju said Parliament's job is to make law and 'the Supreme Court can definitely interpret it in the right way." As the apex court has reserved the interim orders on three key issues after hearing both sides in the Waqf case, Rijiju said he will not make any preemptive statement as the matter is in the court.
'We are very confident that whatever we have done is as per law and as per the provisions and spirit of the Constitution. I am very confident that the role of Parliament will not be taken away," he told PTI.
Rijiju also commented on AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's dejection to the new Waqf law and said he is opposing it out of compulsion. 'The main problem is what I tell you. Some of these leaders, including the Congress party, have treated the Muslims as a vote bank. When you start taking and making a community as a vote bank, then you become irrational.
'Then you put them into one bracket, that good or bad doesn't matter, they will all be rhetorical," the minister added.
Union Minister further said those who are opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, are only trying to keep the Muslims poor and ensure that they remain as their vote bank.
'Our thinking is opposite to that. Ours is appeasement to none, justice to all," Rijiju said.
There are many within the Muslim community, lots of groups, women, children and backward communities who have not gotten any benefit out of the Waqf properties, the minister told PTI on Friday.
'So, India's Waqf properties you know very well are the highest number of Waqf properties in the world. More than 9,70,000 Waqf properties are there which must be put into use for the purpose for which those properties were created," Rijiju said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act was passed by Parliament in April and subsequently came into force through a government notification.
While the BJP-led NDA had rallied in support of the Bill, the opposition INDIA bloc united in opposing it.

Rush Hour: Assam constable's son held as suspected Bangladeshi, blasts acquittal challenged and more
We're building a brand-new studio to bring you bold ground reports, sharp interviews, hard-hitting podcasts, explainers and more. Support Scroll's studio fund today. The Maharashtra government moved the Supreme Court challenging a Bombay High Court order on Monday acquitting all 12 persons accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. The High Court said that the prosecution had 'utterly failed' in establishing the guilt of the 12 men. This came nearly 10 years after a special court had sentenced five of them to death and others to life imprisonment. It remarked that while punishing the perpetrators of a crime is an essential step, creating a 'false appearance of having solved a case' leads to a misleading sense of resolution. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on Thursday. The Supreme Court refused to examine the legality of the directives issued by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments requiring eateries along the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage route to display quick response codes with their owners' identities. The bench reiterated that the eateries must display their licences and registration certificates as required by law. The petitioners had argued that the governments' orders violated the court's 2024 interim order that prohibited vendors being forced to disclose their identities. The pleas had contended that the directives not only undermine the spirit of the court's stay, but also risks discriminatory profiling, particularly of vendors from minority communities, under the guise of public safety and licencing requirements. An Assam Police constable has said that his son is among nine Muslims of Bengali origin who have been detained in Gurugram since Sunday on suspicion of being undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants. Sannat Ali, a constable in the Assam Industrial Security Force, told Scroll that his son, 23-year-old Ashraful Islam, is a resident of Barbala village in Barpeta district. He had gone to Haryana on July 11 to work at a construction site, said Ali. Ali said that his son had submitted his voter ID card, school certificates, Aadhaar card and PAN card, which were not accepted by the police. 'They call them illegal Bangladeshis,' Ali alleged. He added: 'We have sent more documents like my service identity card and voter cards. Senior police officials have contacted me this morning. They are working to release him.' An assistant commissioner of police-rank in Gurugram told Scroll that the action was taken as per the Union home ministry's guidelines to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. A day after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the vice president, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished him good health and said that the Rajya Sabha chairperson had 'got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities'. Dhankhar had cited medical reasons for stepping down with immediate effect on Monday, which was the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Several Opposition leaders raised questions about the timing of Dhankhar's resignation. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that there were 'far deeper reasons' behind Dhankhar's decision.

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal rejects Congress' appeal against tax demand on ₹199 crore income
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) has rejected the Indian National Congress' appeal against an income tax demand on an income of ₹199.15 crore, saying that the party filed its returns past the deadline for availing of exemptions due to political parties, and that it also violated cash donation limits. 'We thus conclude that the assessee's return filed on 02.02.2019 is not within the 'due' date to make it eligible for the impugned exemption,' the ITAT said in its order. According to the order, the Congress filed its income tax return for the financial year 2017-18 on February 2, 2019. As per the Income Tax Act, 1961, political parties are allowed a later deadline for filing their returns. For the financial year 2017-18, that deadline was December 31, 2018. In its return, the Congress had declared nil income for 2017-18 after claiming an exemption of ₹199.15 crore under Section 13A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, the ITAT ruled that, since the return was filed late, it was not eligible for this exemption. In addition, the assessing officer also found that the Congress had received ₹14.49 lakh as cash donations, which exceeded the limit of ₹2,000 per individual. According to changes made to the Income Tax Act made through the Finance Act 2017, political parties can receive donations above ₹2,000 only through formal banking channels, not cash. Overall, the party's declared total receipts of ₹199.15 crore against expenses of ₹197.43 crore, thereby showing a surplus of ₹1.71 crore. However, the Income Tax Department's assessment order on July 6, 2021, denied that the income could be exempted from tax, making the full receipt amount taxable. The Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) then upheld this decision on March 28, 2023, following which the Congress approached the Appellate Tribunal.
