Despite military gains, experts
stress
that Somalia's fight against terrorism must go beyond security operations. Analysts argue that tackling poverty, expanding education, and promoting tolerance are key to undermining extremist ideologies.
African affairs expert Dr. Ramadan Qarni highlighted the economic and climate-related pressures hindering Somalia's anti-terror efforts, while Dr. Ismail Taher stressed the need for ideological engagement and development programs to reduce radicalisation.
Both called for stronger international cooperation, improved regional stability, and long-term investments in Somalia's security and development infrastructure to counter the persistent threat of al-Shabaab.

Israeli forces kill at least 62 in Gaza as strikes continue to hit civilians near aid points - War on Gaza
Israeli forces killed at least 62 people in Gaza on Friday, including 10 who had gathered to receive aid, according to Gaza's civil defence agency. Spokesperson Mahmud Bassal told AFP that they were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunfire across the Gaza Strip. A day earlier, the civil defence agency reported 56 people killed in another wave of Israeli attacks, including six struck at two separate aid distribution points. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Friday slammed the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which set up aid distribution sites across the war-torn strip, calling it "slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid". According to Gaza's Government Media Office, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed and 4,066 injured by Israeli forces over the past month while attempting to access humanitarian aid. In a statement posted to Telegram on Wednesday, the office described the so-called "American-Israeli aid centres" as "death traps and traps for daily mass killing and luring," saying they had become sites of repeated massacres. The statement said the killings occurred as Palestinians attempted to reach food amid "a policy of starvation and comprehensive siege". According to MSF, in the week of 8 June, shortly after GHF opened a distribution site in central Gaza's Netzarim corridor, its field hospital in nearby Deir el-Balah recorded a 190 percent increase in bullet wound cases compared with the previous week. It has also previously warned that aid is being weaponised by Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians as part of a broader campaign of ethnic cleansing. "This initiative seems to be a cynical ploy to feign compliance with International Humanitarian Law," it said, adding that it "uses aid as a tool to forcibly displace people as part of... a broader strategy to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip." Earlier on Friday, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that at least 11 people were killed in Israeli air and drone strikes in southern Gaza. Israeli warplanes bombed a tent sheltering displaced families in al-Mawasi, a declared "safe zone" south-west of Khan Younis, while drones struck the Bani Suheila and Sheikh Nasser neighbourhoods. One person was also reported killed in a separate airstrike on al-Qarara. It was unclear whether those casualties were included in the civil defence toll. Gaza's health ministry said on Friday that Israel has killed at least 56,331 people and wounded more than 132,632 others since 7 October 2023, the majority of them women and children. It said 72 people were killed and 174 injured in the past 24 hours alone. Taarek Refaat In a significant diplomatic milestone, Egypt has assumed the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), with Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives Mohamed Abou El-Enein, formally receiving the presidency during the 9th Summit of Speakers and 18th Plenary Session held in Spain. The handover comes at a time of unprecedented challenges in the Euro-Mediterranean region, marked by escalating conflicts, mounting humanitarian crises, and growing calls for deeper regional integration. A Call for Shared Responsibility and Regional Unity In his keynote address during the official handover ceremony, Abou El-Enein emphasized Egypt's unwavering commitment since the inception of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) to the principles of shared ownership and collective responsibility. These principles, he argued, are essential for achieving sustainable growth and prosperity for the peoples of the region. 'Egypt has always believed that no real cooperation can take place without laying the foundation for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,' he declared. 'Egyptian diplomacy is founded on the language of cooperation,' he affirmed, noting that parliamentary engagement plays a key role in bridging gaps and fostering consensus among diverse stakeholders. Parliamentary Assembly Echoes Egypt's Stance At the close of the session, members of the PA-UfM issued a strong condemnation of Israel's violations in Gaza, calling for senior Israeli officials to be referred to the International Criminal Court. The Assembly reiterated its support for Egypt's unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue, particularly its categorical rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians and its demand for a sovereign Palestinian state in line with international resolutions. Turkey jails 4 border guards for life for torturing Syrian migrants to death - Region
A court in Turkey has given life sentences to four border guards convicted of torturing two Syrian migrants to death in March 2023, according to a verdict seen by AFP on Friday. Seven other officers were also sentenced in May to up to seven and a half years in prison for "intentional injuries" and "destroying and hiding evidence" in the case, according to the verdict. Prosecutors said the officers, stationed along the Syrian border in Hatay province, had arrested a group of Syrians, including eight who had entered Turkey illegally. Two of them, Abdurrezzak Kastal and Abdulsettar Elhaccar, were found to have been beaten with iron bars and forced to swallow petrol, leading to their deaths. The others were returned to Syria and hospitalised. Millions of Syrians have fled to Turkey since 2011 to escape the civil war, prompting Turkish authorities to build a border wall in an effort to reduce the exodus. Nearly 2.7 million Syrians still live in Turkey, according to the authorities, who said in June that around 275,000 had returned since the ouster of president Bashar Al-Assad in December.
