NI Women's boss has full faith teen shot-stoppers will come good: ‘If they are called upon, I know they are ready to go'

Instead, the manager has backed uncapped namesake teenagers Abbie and Kate Smith to rise to the challenge if she has to throw either in at the deep end.
Jackie Burns' status as Northern Ireland's No.1 is in no doubt and backed up by the fact that she has played every minute of the 15 matches since she returned from injury against Malta in April 2024.
Behind her, however, there is no experienced or obvious backup.
Sixteen-year-old Abbie Smith played just once in the Women's Premiership for Crusaders Strikers before moving to Manchester City's Academy in 2025.
Kate Smith, who was called into the squad to face Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina after Maddy Harvey-Clifford was ruled out, does have more club game-time behind her with both Larne Women and Lisburn Rangers and was part of the Northern Ireland Under-19 squad that played in the recent European qualifiers.
'From my point of view, both Abbie and Kate deserve to be here,' said Oxtoby.
'If they are called upon, I know they are ready to go.
'If it goes really well, I take all the credit, and if it goes really poorly, then I'll take the flak for that.
'It's no different to outfield players, they have to be given the opportunity. They came into the environment last time around as training players, they did really, really well and they deserve to be here.'
Four goalkeepers were used in the 12 games that Burns missed during a year out with an Achilles tendon injury.
Shannon Turner played six times but hasn't been in a squad since Burns returned, while Harvey-Clifford started four times and Lilie Woods and Rachael Norney shared a clean sheet when both made what is their only senior appearance so far in a friendly away to the Czech Republic in July 2023.
Lauren Perry had returned to the squads at the start of 2024 but her chances of challenging for a starting place were wrecked by a third cruciate ligament injury, and Becky Flaherty, who kept two crucial clean sheets on the way to the Women's Euro 2022 Finals, hasn't been in a single squad since the tournament.
The selection of the two Smiths may be with the future in mind, but the present also has to be taken into account with a Nations League Promotion Play-Off still to be played for in Bosnia.
'I know they are prepared really well if needed,' said Oxtoby ahead of Tuesday's encounter in Zenica.
'If the time comes and they go into the game, I've got no doubt that they'll do the job that is asked of them.
'If they make a mistake, that's on me, not on them.'

New exhibition will tell Brighton & Hove Albion's 'unique' story

A new permanent exhibition will detail the "unique and phenomenal" rise of Brighton & Hove Albion from near extinction to European football. The 93 sqm (1,001 sq ft) gallery, which opens in late August 2026, will be on the upper floor of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery near the Royal exhibition will explain Albion's rise from being without a ground and playing 70 miles away in Gillingham in 1997, to reaching the Premier League and qualifying for Europe in East, creative programme manager at Brighton and Hove Museums, said the exhibition will be about how fans came together to save the club. She said: "It's a really unique and phenomenal story. It's all about how the fans came together to save the club when they almost went extinct and then weren't even playing in Brighton for two years."Next year is the club's 125th anniversary so we really wanted to celebrate the club's heritage and some of the history."It's a story that's important not to forget, we're going to be taking lots of objects like programmes and shirts and tell the stories around them. We want to hear people's stories, it's going to be a very fan-led gallery."Cultural consultancy firm Barker Langham was chosen to design the exhibition following a formal tender process and competitive pitch. Albion's museum closed earlier this year for stadium redevelopments including the expanded club shop. "I was delighted to hear it was moving to the museum here, I donated my 2004 play-off winner's medal to the museum so hopefully that will be on show," said former Albion defender Guy Butters, who made nearly 200 appearances for the club between 2002 and 2008."I remember we went on a couple of demonstrations as players, I remember playing at Wycombe away and after the game we got the banners out and stood with the fans."We knew what it meant for the local community to get their own stadium and identity back in the city of Brighton."

Champions League: Tavernier on bench & Meghoma debuts as Rangers host Club Brugge

Update: Date: 19:27 BST Title: What happened during the pre-season friendly? Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Rangers played Club Brugge in a pre-season friendly in early July, but Russell Martin said neither side can take much from that 2-2 draw when asked yesterday. Goals from Hugo Vetlesen and Ludovit Reis gave the Belgian side a 2-0 half-time lead at Ibrox before Mohamed Diomande and Findlay Curtis secured a draw for the hosts after the break. Update: Date: 19:24 BST Title: 'No magic bullet' for Rangers Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Tom EnglishBBC Sport Scotland chief sports writer on BBC Sportsound The fans are thoroughly unconvinced about Russell Martin. The ones who didn't want him in the first place are convinced that he's the wrong choice but who do they want? Who was the golden boy? Who was the one who was going to fix everything? There is no magic bullet there. Martin is not lacking in confidence. He's not lacking in vision. It's difficult when you've seen really unimpressive draws domestically but this is the start. They have to start somewhere and this is where they're at. It's flawed for sure but did anyone think that he was going to walk in here, sign a bunch of players and everything was going to click immediately? Update: Date: 19:22 BST Title: 'It's all good, Mum' - Martin Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Russell Martin has told his mother and others not to "worry" about him and insists he's "enjoying" being Rangers head coach, despite his inconsistent start to life in the Ibrox dugout. "A lot of people message me, who read message boards and stuff, concerned about me and they just don't have to be," Martin said yesterday. "I keep telling my mum, 'don't worry about it'. It's all good. I'm enjoying it. I'm really enjoying it." Update: Date: 19:18 BST Title: 'A few surprises, but still strong' Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Billy DoddsFormer Rangers striker on BBC Radio Scotland A few surprises in the team, but still strong. James Tavernier will be gutted especially after playing such a big part by coming off the bench and showing professionalism, scoring goals.. Lyall Cameron sits on the bench. Thelo Aasgaard doesn't make it after being put to press yesterday. It's still strong. Cyriel Dessers would have helped them tonight because this team will sit deep. Dessers would have suited this game. Update: Date: 19:16 BST Title: Uefa Coefficient: How does it affect European qualification? Content: Ask Me Anything Ask Me Anything It is a big couple of weeks for Scottish football as far as qualification for future European competitions is concerned. Going into the 2025-26 season, Scotland were the 11th-best ranked nation, giving them two Champions League qualification places. For the 2026-27 campaign, Scotland have dropped to 14th, which still gives them two Champions League qualifying places. As things stand, Scotland will enter the 2027-28 season in 17th, significantly effecting their places in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The performances of Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Hibernian, both across the final round of qualifying and if they reach the league phase, will ultimately determine how qualification for the 27-28 campaign will work. Read all about it in our explainer here Update: Date: 19:12 BST Title: Palace-linked Tzolis starts for visitors Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Arguably Club Brugge's star man, Greece international winger Christos Tzolis has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, but starts for the visitors tonight. Along with Tzolis down the left, Carlos Forbs caused havoc down the right in the last round against Salzburg and got on the scoresheet in the 3-2 home win. Veteran midfielder and captain Hans Vanaken has come up with big moments in the Champions League regularly for Brugge and is good for a goal and an assist from midfield. Christos Tzolis scored against Scotland for Greece earlier this year Update: Date: 19:08 BST Title: Meghoma starts as Martin makes seven changes Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Russell Martin has made seven changes to the side that started the 4-2 League Cup win over Alloa on Saturday. Liam Kelly, Emmanuel Fernandez, Oscar Cortes, Joe Rothwell, Bailey Rice, Kieran Dowell, Nadim Bajrami, and Mikey Moore drop out. Jack Butland, John Souttar, Mohamed Diomande, Oliver Antman, Djeidi Gassama, Jayden Meghoma - who only signed on loan from Brentford yesterday - and Nicolas Raskin all start. Jayden Meghoma gets his first start for Rangers after signing on loan from Brentford Update: Date: 19:04 BST Title: LINE-UPS from Ibrox Content: Rangers v Club Brugge (20:00) Rangers: Butland, Aarons, Souttar, Djiga, Meghoma, Diomande, Raskin, Rothwell, Antman, Gassama, Danilo. Rangers 'miss out' on target amid £8m Wrexham transfer

Callum Doyle is said to be on the verge of sealing an £8m move to Wrexham from Manchester City. The Hollywood-owned Championship side are spending big this summer, having already secured the services of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich for £10m. The Welsh side also bought Conor Coady - another former Gers target - from Leicester City for £2m. The Athletic reports that Rangers had shown interest in Doyle when it was made clear he'd be allowed to leave City. The 21-year-old defender came through the youth ranks at the Premier League giants, but has failed to make the grade for the first team. Doyle has enjoyed successful loan spells at the likes of Sunderland, Coventry and Norwich City in the Championship and League One. And that's exactly where his £8m transfer to Wrexham will see him ply his trade for at least the season ahead. Along with Rangers, Sheffield United were also credited with holding an interest in the defender.
