Cloudburst in Himachal's Rampur triggers flash floods, washes away 5-6 vehicles

India Gazette25-05-2025
Rampur (Himachal Pradesh) [India], May 25 (ANI): A sudden cloudburst in Rampur, Himachal Pradesh, triggered flash floods, causing panic and the washing away of 5 to 6 vehicles on Saturday evening.
Anni MLA Lokender Kumar said that water entered inside houses of people and demanded immediate relief work and proper assessment of losses for providing compensation.
Lokender Kumar said, 'Due to heavy rain here along with hailstorm, a cloud burst took place last evening. 5-6 cars have been swept away, and around 24-25 cars are damaged. People are facing a lot of difficulties here. I would request the PWD and revenue department to do a proper assessment of losses. Rescue work should be carried out immediately, and the cars that are struck should be pulled out,'
A local, Salim Ahmed, said, 'In the early evening, it rained very heavily with a storm. Water started flowing from the ditches and drains all of a sudden. Vehicles also started flowing at a very high speed. People came out of their houses and started screaming and crying. After some time, the police also came. They alerted all of us to leave our houses and go to a safe place.'
The local said four to five vehicles were washed out in the River Satluj.
Another local, Narayan, said that the cloudburst incident took place in front of him.
Narayan said, 'I have a shop here. The cloudburst incident took place in front of me, and my car got trapped in the debris. I have come here to take my car.'
No deaths were reported in the incident.
Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing widespread rainfall across the entire state over the past 24 hours.
According to the Himachal Pradesh Meteorological Centre based in Shimla, the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Paonta Sahib, Sirmaur district, which received 107 mm of rain. This was followed by 103 mm of rainfall in Kandaghat, located in Solan district. In comparison, Rampur received 28 mm of rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that this wet spell has been ongoing for the past four to five days and is expected to persist.
Senior Scientist at the Shimla Meteorological Centre, Sandeep Kumar Sharma said, 'Over the last 24 hours, the day temperatures across the state have remained near normal. However, we have observed a drop in the minimum temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in most areas. For instance, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below the seasonal average.'
He added that the lower minimum temperatures are the result of persistent cloud cover and continuous rainfall over the past few days, which is preventing heat from being retained overnight. 'This pattern is typical during prolonged wet spells,' he explained.
Sandeep Kumar Sharma stated that there may be some relief on May 26, when rainfall activity is expected to decrease slightly. However, a fresh spell of widespread rainfall is likely to affect the state again from May 27 to May 29.
The IMD has also issued a hailstorm alert for May 27 and 28 in several districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, Shimla, and Solan. Residents and farmers in these districts are advised to take necessary precautions, as hailstorms can cause damage to crops and infrastructure. (ANI)

Hundreds evacuated in northwestern Turkey as authorities fight wildfires

Firefighters in Turkey are battling wildfires in the centre of the northwestern province of Canakkale, fanned by strong winds, and hundreds of residents have evacuated in precaution, local authorities and media said on Monday. Airplanes, helicopters, vehicles and around 700 personnel are fighting the blazes, city Governor Omer Toraman said in a post on X. Authorities launched some precautionary evacuations, including a university campus, and military and residential areas, and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. The city's airport and the Dardanelles Strait, as well as a part of the highway, were shut due to the wildfires for several hours on Monday before re-opening after sunset. Reuters images showed blazes consuming swathes of forest, with thick smoke billowing into the sky. Helicopters were seen scooping water from the Dardanelles Strait and dousing the wildfires, while water-spraying police vehicles worked to extinguish flames that had spread to some residential buildings in the area. Temperatures in the region reached 33 degrees Celsius with a wind speed of up to 66 kilometres per hour, according to Turkey's meteorological service. Some 50 people were affected by smoke and were treated at nearby medical facilities, with no life-threatening conditions, the governor said.

SW monsoon gains intensity; heavy rainfall likely in northern T.N.

Southwest monsoon, which has become vigorous over the State, will bring scattered rainfall, particularly in north Tamil Nadu till Wednesday. Heavy rainfall may lash some northern districts for the next two days. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, noted that an upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) and adjoining Telangana may influence intense rainfall in parts of north T.N. till Wednesday. Wet spell to continue According to a bulletin, while a few places in north T.N. may experience light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday, it may be of heavy intensity in Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts. A similar weather trend may continue on Wednesday as well with more northern districts such as Vellore and Tirupattur falling in the path of heavy rainfall. Officials of the RMC, Chennai, said with the monsoon picking up momentum in Kerala, Nilgiris district too have chances of heavy rainfall till Wednesday. The wet spell is likely to continue till the weekend. The prevailing weather system had kept most parts of the State cooler than usual on Monday, with the highest day temperature of 35.3 degree Celsius recorded at Nungambakkam in Chennai. Several places, including Vellore, Mayiladuthurai, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Salem received rainfall on Monday too till 6 p.m. B. Amudha, Head (Additional in-charge), RMC, Chennai, said the low pressure area expected to form over northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal around Wednesday may largely trigger rainfall over A.P. and other States. A few districts may receive heavy rainfall because of the possible cloud banding around the weather system. There will be more clarity on the rainfall pattern once the low pressure area consolidates, she said. Chennai too has chances of evening rainfall due to thunderstorms activity. The RMC has forecast light to moderate rainfall in some areas on Tuesday. The wet spell over the past few days has pushed the State's seasonal rainfall to a 20% surplus since June 1.
