Fabrizio Romano has dropped a mega update on Liverpool's Florian Wirtz pursuit. The Reds are pushing hard.
Liverpool are hoping to seal a deal for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The German playmaker has chosen the Reds as his next destination, surprising everyone.

Bayern Munich were the overwhelming favourites to sign Wirtz. They do, after all, appear to have first option on every major German talent.
Then Manchester City entered the race, hoping to secure a proper replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. Their financial might provided real competition to Bayern and it was thought they had a real chance at Wirtz.
Then, suddenly, Liverpool came out of nowhere to have a place in the race. Reports that Wirtz had actually met with the Reds shocked everyone - as did City quickly pulling out of the race.
From there, Liverpool gained momentum and before you knew it, Bayern were out of the race, too. Wirtz had chosen a move to Anfield.

Things have been relatively quiet since then as Liverpool negotiated with Leverkusen. Finally, though, it appears we've had a solid breakthrough.

Liverpool have now made a bigger offer for Wirtz and it appears to have pushed things towards an agreement. That's the line from Fabrizio Romano and several others on Friday.
An offer of around €130m has gone in, which includes add-ons. Leverkusen now need to decide how they want that amount paid.
And according to Romano, that's really the 'final detail'. This one is very, very close.
"The structure of the add-ons is the final detail being negotiated between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz," he wrote on Twitter.

Bosnia's women rugby pioneers target Olympic qualification
By Amel Emric ZENICA, Bosnia (Reuters) -Erna Huseinovic fell in love with rugby after coaching young children at a local club in the central town of Zenica, the home of Bosnia's first women's rugby sevens team. A speedy winger, Huseinovic is preparing with her teammates for their first international competition in Croatia in September. "I found in rugby something that I did not find in other sports," said Huseinovic, a 25-year-old student at the Zenica faculty for sports. "The goal of my team is to achieve success in regional competitions and qualify for the 2032 Olympic Games," she said. Rugby has been played for 50 years in Zenica, and Celik, regular winners of rugby championships in the former Yugoslavia, established the first women's team last year after a previous attempt had failed during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Our goal is to form women's teams in several cities across Bosnia so they can compete in domestic and international competitions," said Mirza Oruc, a vice-president of Bosnia's rugby association and coach of the national women's team. "We want to compete in rugby sevens and qualify for the Brisbane Olympic Games," Oruc told Reuters, adding that sevens was a version of rugby helping to break stereotypes about the tough sport being exclusively for men. Sara Hadzic, 25, heard about rugby at Zenica university, where she studies German language and literature. "I wanted to try something new and different, to meet new girlfriends," said Hadzic, who did karate as a child. "I am playing now recreationally but I might go professional in the future." The mothers of several children training at the Celik club decided to try out the sports themselves. "Rugby is love, friendship, socializing, family," said Brankica Sekerovic. "I have come to the club as a supporter during tournaments and met some wonderful mums ... and then came a love for rugby."

Ex-Arsenal talent jailed for drug smuggling, who can beat Spain at World Cup?

Now this former Arsenal forward is serving time for drug smuggling. On the way: The reason Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is now a former footballer is because of the story you're about to read. As recently as September of last year, he was playing out his days with Greenock Morton, a Scottish team on the outskirts of Glasgow. Then the police came knocking. That same month, Emmanuel-Thomas — best known as a product of Arsenal's academy — was arrested as part of a drugs bust and accused of smuggling cannabis with a street value of £600,000 ($814,000) into the UK. Yesterday, a court sentenced him to four years in prison. Aged 34, his name is tarred and his career is over, a sharp fall from grace complete. Advertisement It's many moons since mentions of Emmanuel-Thomas in dispatches were making ears prick at Arsenal and beyond. Ultimately, it didn't happen for him there and he soon became nomadic, passing through clubs in England, Scotland, Thailand and India. But he's still the guy Arsene Wenger once described as 'an unbelievable finisher' — so lethal and powerful that when he helped destroy Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup in 2009, Liverpool's players refused to believe he was young enough to be taking part in the competition. Why, then, did Emmanuel-Thomas embroil himself in the importation of narcotics, a crime his own barrister described as 'a catastrophic error of judgement', when, before this offence, he had been a law-abiding citizen his entire life? Danny Taylor was in court to find out. 'The most painful experience' By the time of his arrest, Emmanuel-Thomas was no longer earning big from football. His pay at Morton was £600 a week, before bonuses. The club terminated his six-month contract as soon as he was charged. Chelmsford Crown Court heard how he may have been tempted into criminality during his short time playing for Thai side PTT Rayong in 2019. The cannabis in question arrived on a plane from Bangkok. The court was also told that Emmanuel-Thomas enlisted two women — one of them his own partner at the time — to act as couriers, promising them £2,500 in cash and flying them business class via Dubai. The women were themselves charged by police, but the allegations against them were dropped after WhatsApp conversations showed they believed they were bringing gold back to the UK, rather than illegal drugs. Emmanuel-Thomas deleted his messages, threw away his mobile phone and, at first, denied all wrongdoing — before changing his tune and pleading guilty. The maximum sentence for cannabis importation in the UK is 14 years. He received four, although nine months of that sentence have already been served by him on remand. He called his conviction 'the most painful and eye-opening experience of my life'. Advertisement A father of two, he will re-emerge from prison before long, with no semblance of a career to cling to. As the judge told him, 'You will no longer be known for being a professional footballer. You will be known as a criminal, a professional footballer who threw it all away and put others at risk of imprisonment in pursuit of money.' The World Cup is rarely a foregone conclusion but, with the big kick-off in North America a little over 12 months away, is anybody looking beyond Spain? El Chadaille Bitshiabu extends RB Leipzig contract
RB Leipzig officially confirmed French centre-back El Chadaille Bitshiabu's reported upon contract extension on Friday. The 20-year-old's new deal with his Bundesliga club runs through 2029. When fit, Bitshiabu served as one of the brighter spots in this year's highly disappointing season for the German Red Bulls. Leipzig continue to shed players and remain on the hunt for a head coach to lead the team in their first Europe-less season since achieving promotion to the German top flight. There remains no news on the matter, though RB did confirm the termination of failed academy director Manuel Baum on Friday. Advertisement News that the famous former Augsburg and Schalke 04 head coach would depart after two years overseeing a failed developmental program was immediately followed up by the Bitshiabu announcement. 'We are delighted to have extended Chad's contract early,' RB sporting director Marcel Schäfer noted in a club statement. 'He is one of the most talented defenders in the Bundesliga. Chad has developed tremendously over the past season, making great progress in all areas and fully deserving this extension.
