Nevada's cage-free egg law temporarily suspended as bird flu impacts supply across state

Yahoo20-02-2025
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada Department of Agriculture temporarily suspended Nevada's cage-free egg law to address the strain on egg supplies and high egg prices across the state.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) State Quarantine Officer Director J.J. Goicoechea, DVM suspended the law starting Feb. 20. As a result, eggs for retail sale can be sourced from any egg producer meeting food-safety guidelines, regardless of whether the eggs originated from hens in a cage-free housing system.
'Eggs are typically the most cost-effective protein source for food-insecure populations,' Goicoechea said. 'When families can't find eggs on the shelf, and when they do the prices are not attainable, this can leave them without an essential food they depend on.'
Nevada passed cage-free egg regulations in 2021 which require all eggs sold in Nevada to be sourced from cage-free hens. 'Cage-Free' is defined as eggs from hens in an enclosure in which they are unrestricted and free to roam, with a total space of at least one square foot per hen in the enclosure, according to NDA.

The order was issued to help address the strain on eggs as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) continues to impact the poultry industry, particularly cage-free egg producers, causing the supply of cage-free eggs to be significantly reduced, NDA said.
Assembly Bill 171 was passed during the current Legislative session and allows for the temporary suspension of cage-free regulations for up to 120 days in emergencies. Goicoechea's order will begin Thursday.
'This egg shortage didn't happen overnight, and we cannot resolve it overnight,' Goicoechea said. 'We anticipate roughly 30 days before we can secure new contracts and start to see increased egg supplies on the shelf, and hopefully lower prices as availability increases.'
The order also allows for the sale of 'Grade B' quality standard eggs. These eggs must meet all of the food safety requirements of 'Grade A' eggs but may have different colors, shapes and sizes.

Locals left waiting for answers on major rail project in Ritchot

Residents in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot are still waiting for answers about the proposed Winnipeg Regional Rail Park. This multi-million-dollar project remains largely under wraps due to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Billed as a future inland port designed to complement CentrePort and other trade infrastructure, the site is expected to be located west of Highway 75 — a corridor identified as strategically important due to its proximity to U.S. border crossings and existing rail lines. In August 2023, the Government of Manitoba awarded $18 million to JohnQ Public Inc., a municipally owned corporation, to support the proposed rail hub. The funds were allocated for land acquisition, engineering, and environmental assessments. Despite the size and significance of the investment, the announcement received little public attention at the time. The province's finance minister has since confirmed that the funding is now under review, adding further uncertainty to the project's future. To date, the Ritchot municipal records show limited formal discussion about the project. It remains unclear how much of the $18 million has already been spent, which parcels of land — if any — have been purchased, or whether public consultation occurred before approval. JohnQ was formally incorporated in 2022 as a Municipal Participation Corporation, a structure that allows municipalities to jointly own and operate a legal entity focused on economic development. The corporation includes 12 rural municipalities surrounding Winnipeg and is governed by a board composed of elected officials and industry experts. According to its website, JohnQ was created in response to increasing infrastructure challenges, including limited municipal budgets and the growing complexity of large-scale projects. The organization describes its mandate as 'filling gaps where they exist' and partnering with local businesses to deliver practical infrastructure solutions. While proponents say the model offers flexibility and scale, it has also raised concerns among residents who are seeking more information about oversight and decision-making. As a separate corporate entity, JohnQ is not subject to the same reporting and transparency requirements as conventional municipal departments or committees. As the proposed host municipality, Ritchot holds a key geographical position in the rail park project. However, specific details about the RM's role — including any planning approvals, infrastructure contributions, or consultations with ratepayers — have not been made public. Mayor Chris Ewen and the RM's communications team confirmed that all parties involved remain under a non-disclosure agreement, which limits what can be shared with the public. In an email to the RM of Springfield, whose mayor is also on the board at JohnQ Public, resident Edwin Giesbrecht wondered why JohnQ Public board members were required to sign non-disclosure agreements, and who initiated the NDA, and under whose authority. 'This raises serious concerns about transparency,' he says. 'If NDAs have been used to create selective access to municipal information, this represents a distortion of representative governance and raises serious ethical questions.' The Municipal Participation Corporation model used by JohnQ is still relatively rare in Canada, but it is being monitored as a possible approach for advancing rural economic development. Supporters argue that the model enables municipalities to collaborate on projects that would otherwise be financially or logistically out of reach. Critics, however, point to the need for clearer governance and greater public accountability. As discussions continue, residents, investors, and local officials will be watching closely to see how this partnership-based approach evolves — and how it could shape the infrastructure and economy of southern Manitoba. — Steven Sukkau is a Local Journalism Initiative reporter who works out of the Winnipeg Sun. ‘I'm running,' Cannizzaro announces she will run for Nevada Attorney General's seat

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro announced on Tuesday that she is starting her campaign for the attorney general's office in 2026. She is the second major candidate to do so. 'Our leaders should be focused on making Nevada safer and stronger, but the Trump administration and Congress have continued their assault on ordinary Nevadans, cutting Medicaid and funding for our schools, attacking Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights, and raising the cost of energy, housing and groceries,' she said in a news release. Cannizzaro is a lifelong Nevadan, a former prosecutor, and the first woman to serve as Majority Leader of the Nevada State Senate. Her announcement also included a YouTube video. Cannizzaro will go up against state Treasurer Zach Conine in the democratic primary. The former attorney and consultant was the first major candidate when he announced in May that he would seek the attorney general's office. According to his campaign website, he is 'running to be Nevada's next Attorney General because Nevadans deserve someone who isn't afraid of rolling up their sleeves to take on big fights.' It also states, 'Whether it's protecting Nevadans from overreach by the federal government, leveling the playing field for workers, families, and small businesses, or delivering results for Nevadans who are struggling.' Current Attorney General Aaron Ford announced his plans to challenge Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. UK Moves to Ban NDAs to Hide Misconduct Cases, Guardian Reports

The UK government is moving to ban employers deploying nondisclosure agreements to muzzle workers who have been victims of misconduct on the job, the Guardian reported on Monday. Under the reforms being prepared as part of broader employee rights legislation by Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government, any NDA that tried to head off complaints of workplace discrimination or harassment would be unenforceable, the newspaper reported.
