YSRCP slams Naidu govt for neglecting weavers, breaking handloom promises
The YSRCP on Thursday accused the NDA-led Andhra Pradesh government of "neglecting" the handloom sector and "abandoning" key pre-poll promises, alleging that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's administration had "betrayed the weaver community and pushed them into distress." YSRCP leaders hit out at Naidu govt on National Handloom Day, accusing it of abandoning weavers and failing to act on key welfare promises made before polls.(CMO Andhra Pradesh-X) YSRCP leaders, including MLC Lella Appi Reddy, Surendra Babu, and Chillapalli Mohan Rao, said the government's inaction had deepened the crisis faced by weavers. This came after Naidu marked National Handloom Day with promises to support weavers and revive the handloom sector. "Naidu and his administration have betrayed weavers by abandoning election promises, leaving the community in crisis," the leaders alleged in a press release. Appi Reddy claimed that under the previous YSRCP government, benefits worth ₹3,700 crore were extended to the handloom sector, including ₹1.2 lakh each to 85,000 weaver families. He accused the NDA coalition of "making hollow and misleading promises". The YSRCP leaders criticised the current government for allegedly failing to implement schemes such as free electricity, GST relief, and health insurance for weavers, even after 14 months in power. Also Read: Chandrababu Naidu backs Hindi amid NEP row: 'Language is not for hating' Surendra Babu claimed that IT Minister Nara Lokesh had promised GST reimbursement, but no proposal had been brought before the GST Council to that effect. He alleged that the government continued to impose the same tax burden on weavers. He also alleged that the promised free electricity scheme remained unimplemented, even six months after an official order was issued. Chillapalli Mohan Rao claimed that the previous YSRCP government had tripled weavers' income and cleared dues worth ₹400 crore owed by the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (APCO). He added that showrooms were also constructed during Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure, unlike the 'symbolic gestures' from the current administration. The YSRCP demanded immediate fulfillment of promises made to weavers, warning that "continued neglect would deepen the crisis in the sector."

CM announces free power, ₹25,000 annual aid for A.P. weavers
VIJAYAWADA Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the supply of up to 200 units of power per month free of cost to handlooms and 500 units per month to powerlooms from this month, which entail a burden of ₹190 crore to the government, an annual financial assistance of ₹25,000 per handloom weaver family under the 'Netanna Bharosa' scheme, and reimbursement of up to 5% of the Goods & Services Tax (GST) on handloom products. Also, he stated that the government would set up a Handloom Museum in Amaravati to showcase the richness of the handloom products from Andhra Pradesh that won global acclaim. Participating in a National Handloom Day event here on Thursday, Mr. Naidu said the government aimed at doubling the incomes of handloom weavers by implementing various schemes and that the free power scheme would benefit 93,000 handloom weaver families and 50,000 powerloom weaver families. He noted that the TDP was the first to provide social security pensions to weavers at age 50 and it was benefiting 92,724 families. The government was incurring an expenditure of ₹546 crore every year on account of the hike in pensions being given to weavers, to ₹4,000. A host of measures were taken to improve the living standards of handloom weavers in spite of financial constraints, as welfare was on top of the government's agenda, he said. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the handloom sector was in dire straits during the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) regime as the procurement from APCO almost came to a halt, and subsidies on yarn and dye were stopped. Many other steps taken by the YSRCP government made the lives of weavers miserable. The coalition government is restoring the thrift fund of ₹5 crore. Emphasis has been laid on increasing the market access to weavers through the One District One Product scheme. Handloom clusters Five new handloom clusters were in the process of being established under the National Rural Livelihood Mission in Mangalagiri, Venkatagiri, Uppada, Srikalahasti, and Rajam at a cost of ₹74 crore. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the handloom sector was the second largest after agriculture providing livelihood to around 1,22,644 families, and that the TDP had never neglected the weavers even when it was in the opposition. The handloom products made in Mangalagiri, Dharmavaram, Venkatagiri, Uppada, Pedana, Chirala, Ponduru, Madanapalli, Kodumuru, Nandavaram and Yemmiganur made a lasting impression on the buyers, Mr. Naidu said, expressing the government's commitment to doing whatever was required to revive the sector, and announcing that the birth anniversary of former MP Pragada Kotaiah, who spearheaded the handloom movement, would henceforth be celebrated as a State function. Earlier, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu visited the stalls set up by the Department of Handlooms & Textiles, and the Weavershala set up by the Titan company to help modernise weaving techniques and preserving the art (of hand weaving) for future generations. Ministers Nara Lokesh and S. Savitha, Advisor (Handlooms and Handicrafts) Suchitra Ella and Special Chief Secretary R.P. Sisodia were among those present.

BJP leader urges Andhra CM to consider ''Four Water Concept'' as alternative to PBLP
Hyderabad: BJP leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy on Thursday urged Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu to consider the Four Water Concept (FWC) of late engineer T Hanumanth Rao as an alternative to the Polavaram (Godavari)-Banakacharla Link Project (PBLP). In a letter to Naidu, Shashidhar Reddy, Former Vice Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said FWC is a viable, low-cost alternative to the Banakacharla project, which can be implemented in about two years. The FWC is capable of providing water for three crops annually and can cater to 30 lakh acres at a total cost of just Rs 4,500 crores (at Rs 15,000 per acre at current rates). This would be a fraction of even the minimum basic estimated cost of Rs 81,900 crore for the Banakacharla project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government, he said. Shashidhar Reddy recalled that Naidu, as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, had launched the 'Neeru-Meeru' (massive watershed managment) programme in 2000 in the wake of a devastating drought. The project yielded "excellent results". "I see you as a visionary and a class apart. I am confident that you will seriously consider shelving the Polavaram-Banakacharla project and opt for implementing FWC at a fraction of its cost with triple benefit of providing water for three crops in a year," he said in the letter to Naidu. In the Four Waters concept, the focus is on using rainwater, surface water, groundwater, and maintenance of soil moisture at a high level to improve water availability and agricultural productivity. The concept promotes the use of simple, low-cost earthen structures like percolation tanks, farm ponds, and trenches instead of large cement structures. The Polavaram (Godavari)-Banakacharla Link Project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government faced opposition from Telangana. The Telangana government complained to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry that the project hurts the state's interests.
