While 87% of professionals report using AI for work-related research tasks—a sharp increase from 75% in 2023—the survey also exposes rising concerns around data fidelity, cybersecurity risks, and the readiness of current AI solutions for complex life science environments.
This snapshot of market sentiment arrives at a pivotal moment, as companies seek faster insights and operational efficiencies but face institutional barriers to confident AI implementation.

AI adoption is high, but value varies: 87% of researchers report using AI in their workflows, yet only 27% of avid users say it brings high value. Top providers gaining traction: Scientists identified Microsoft, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Google DeepMind as leading organizations in developing or deploying AI in life sciences. Efficiency drives demand: Most users cite faster processing, improved throughput, and time savings as key benefits. SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 13 — Elon Musk has taken his feud against OpenAI to the App Store, accusing Apple of favoring ChatGPT in the digital shop and vowing legal action. 'Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation,' Musk said in a post on his social network X on Monday, without providing evidence to back his claim. 'xAI will take immediate legal action,' he added, referencing his own artificial intelligence company. X users responded by pointing out that DeepSeek AI out of China hit the top spot in the App Store early this year, and Perplexity AI recently ranked number one in the App Store in India. DeepSeek and Perplexity compete with OpenAI and Musk's startup xAI. Both OpenAI and xAI released new versions of their AI assistants, ChatGPT and Grok, in the past week. App Store rankings on Tuesday listed ChatGPT as the top free iPhone app with Grok in fifth place. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Factors going into App Store rankings include user engagement, reviews, and the number of downloads. OpenAI and Apple in June of last year announced an alliance to enhance iPhones and other devices with ChatGPT features. ChatGPT-5 rolled out free to the nearly 700 million people who use it weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists last week. Tech industry rivals Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and xAI have been pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence since the blockbuster launch of the first version of ChatGPT in late 2022. Chinese startup DeepSeek shook up the AI sector early this year with a model that delivers high performance using less costly chips. OpenAI in April of this year filed counterclaims against multi-billionaire Musk, accusing its former co-founder of waging a 'relentless campaign' to damage the organization after it achieved success without him. In legal documents filed at the time in northern California federal court, OpenAI alleged Musk became hostile toward the company after abandoning it years before its breakthrough achievements with ChatGPT. The lawsuit was another round in a bitter feud between the generative AI (genAI) start-up and the world's richest man, who sued OpenAI last year, accusing the company of betraying its founding mission. In its countersuit, the company alleged Musk 'made it his project to take down OpenAI, and to build a direct competitor that would seize the technological lead -- not for humanity but for Elon Musk.' AI the great equaliser, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The developmental divide in different parts of the country will be bridged with Artificial Intelligence (AI), says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'AI will not be a tool for the few. It will be a force for all; powering better governance, sparking innovation and improving lives. 'Through our AI Nation Framework, we will ensure that AI works for every Malaysian, in every corner of the country,' the Prime Minister said. He said technological advancement would also help empower small businesses and communities across Asean. 'For Asean, this is a generational opportunity. 'With over 700 million citizens, a rapidly growing digital economy and an extraordinary diversity of cultures and languages, our region is uniquely placed to shape AI in ways that are inclusive and ethical,' he said when launching the Asean AI Summit 2025 here. He also said the vision to harness AI should not simply be to catch up with the rest of the world, but also to be a leader. This, he said, could be done by offering a model of innovation grounded in trust, rooted in equity and shaped by South-East Asian values. 'The true measure of AI's success is not in the sophistication of its technology, but in its ability to meaningfully uplift the lives of our rakyat,' he added. Anwar said the Malaysian government was committed to digital transformation. At the centre of that transformation is Malaysia's ambition to be an AI Nation. Anwar also launched Malaysia's first large language model (LLM) called 'Ilmu'. 'Ilmu' – short for Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu – is a multimodal AI model that can process and generate text, voice and images. The model, fully developed by YTL AI Lab, tops all frontier models in understanding the Malay language, outperforms Llama 3.1 in real-world problem-solving and equals GPT-4o in handling complex instructions. YTL AI Labs also announced the Ilmu AI Accelerator Programme in partnership with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), which is open to Malaysian start-ups, SMEs and global solution providers. Digital Minister Gobind Singh, who was present, said Malaysia was committed towards making the national AI vision inclusive for all citizens. 'In 2024, a report by the United Nations and International Labour Organisation observed that there is an AI divide, where high-income nations benefit from AI advancements, while low- and medium-income countries lag behind. 'The ministry's strategy is to close this divide,' he said in his speech. Gobind also said the ministry was working to expand free AI literacy programmes and building homegrown innovation ecosystems. 'Affordability and access are equally critical. 'If only a select few can use and shape AI systems, then it is only that select few who will influence decisions we make. 'We want every Malaysian to have the means and skills to guide AI,' he added. Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn said the inaugural Asean AI Summit demonstrated that the bloc could forge more pathways that make AI a driver of peace, prosperity and progress. 'Let us seize this opportunity to build an AI-powered Asean economy aligned for a future where technology empowers all,' he said.
