Ruiter learners shine in Golden Lions U13 team
Two talented young rugby players from Laerskool Die Ruiter, Khumo Gaanabo and Kgotso Koetle, have earned spots on the prestigious U13 Golden Lions team.
The journey to this achievement was not an easy one, as they had to navigate regional trials, make it to the red squad, and ultimately secure their places in the team. They are now working towards being selected for the Craven Week or U13 Academy Week, a significant milestone in their rugby careers.

According to Reggie Gama, the team manager, both Khumo and Kgotso possess outstanding qualities that set them apart.
'They are both confident, have great leadership skills, and have personal life goals within the sport,' he said.
In an interview with the Roodepoort Record, Khumo and Kgotso shared their passion for rugby. Both players started playing the sport in grade four and aspire to play professionally.
For Kgotso, making the team two years in a row is a personal achievement that highlights his commitment and perseverance. Longtime coach of the boys, Lou Janse van Rensburg, said they saw quite early that the boys had outstanding rugby abilities, and they took it upon themselves to train, nurture, and encourage them to an even better standard.
'They are both good players, and you can see it when they are on the field. We are very proud of them,' he said.

Checkmate! Die Ruiter learners make chess history
Laerskool Die Ruiter is beaming with pride after three of its learners made history by qualifying for the Gauteng Chess Championships. Taye Kaldine (13), Daniel Nkhoma (13), and 11-year-old Kgosi Menyatsoe performed exceptionally well at the D12 Chess Tournament on May 17 at The King's School West Rand and will compete on August 1 at Barble Hall in Benoni. 'They have made history in the school, and it's a first for Laerskool Die Ruiter to have three learners qualify for the Gauteng championships,' coach Hennie Kruger said. The trio also earned their D12 colours, which is a testament to their hard work and dedication. The school's chess programme has been a success, with initially 33 learners who took on the challenge. The first competition took place earlier in May at the Roodepoort Cluster, and only seven individuals qualified to make the D12 team. Hennie praised all the learners who took on the challenge, especially the three who made it to the top. 'We're extremely proud of them,' he said. Netball prodigy off to provincials
With her eyes set on the ultimate goal – to one day play for the U21 SPAR Baby Proteas – Khumo Segopolo is ready to take on the challenge, as she has been selected for the Gauteng team to participate in the South African Schools Netball (SASN) All Ages Netball Tournament hosted at Hoërskool EG Jansen in June. Khumo recently made her debut as a junior player for the Southern Gauteng Netball Team at the Inter-Provincial (IPT) Indoor Netball Tournament in Cape Town in April, alongside some of the best action netball players in the country in the Junior League Montague. Her journey as a junior in such a high-performance category makes her a player to keep your eyes on. Also read: Netball starlet triumphs at provincial tournament Khumo shared that starting to play at the age of 11, she was fortunate to have a mother who has experience as a provincial and national player who assisted her with extra training sessions outside of her normal practices. She adds that she feels most confident playing as a goal attack (GA), as she knows that this position plays a crucial role in the attacking third, often working together with the goal shooter to create effective offensive plays. The future looks bright for young Khumo as her eyes are set on representing South Africa in the 2026 Emirates Dubai 7's Netball Tournament for the junior Proteas team.
