Emma Raducanu digs deep to beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse in first round in Montreal
Raducanu arrived at the WTA 1000 event fresh from an impressive semi-final showing at the Citi Open last week, but immediately faced five break points in her first service game.
The world number 33 weathered the storm and despite a run of six games in a row midway through the match, Raducanu was largely forced to battle and scrap to ensure she chalked up a sixth win from her last eight matches.

Raducanu was swiftly back in action after her last-four run in Washington, but quickly in trouble as Ruse forced five break points in the opening game of the match.
In more hot and humid conditions in Canada, British number one Raducanu showed her resilience and leaned on her improved serve to claim a crucial hold before more issues were forthcoming in her next service game.
After Raducanu again survived, having been taken to deuce, she sensed her moment and was able to break Ruse to move 3-2 up after the Romanian sent down two double-faults.
It sparked a run of six consecutive games for Raducanu as she clinched the opener by a 6-2 score, but an early break at the start of the second set was followed by an immediate response from Ruse.
While Raducanu forced more break points on Ruse's serve, it was not until the seventh game of set two when the 2021 US Open champion broke again to move 4-3 ahead.

It started a run of three consecutive breaks before Raducanu kept her cool to close out victory at the first time of asking on serve after a demanding one-hour-and-37-minute battle in the country of her birth.
Next up for Raducanu is a second-round meeting with 32nd seed Peyton Stearns.

The Latvian, a former world number 11 who has had lengthy spells out on maternity leave and with a torn ACL, beat the third seed 3-6 6-4 6-1.

Padel could come to Rotherham under new plans
The dedicated padel tennis centre could open in Rotherham under new plans submitted to the application to transform a vacant industrial unit in Hellaby would see several indoor padel courts built alongside a small cafe and Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has supported the proposal, describing the development as a "fantastic attribute for the Rotherham area".The LTA said there were currently no padel courts in Rotherham and praised the facility's potential to boost participation in what it calls the "fastest-growing sport in the world". Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, played on a smaller enclosed court, and is designed to be more accessible and sociable than traditional site, Unit 1, Sandbeck Way, is currently a vacant truck park and distribution warehouse which dates back to the 1970s, according to the Local Democracy Reporting to the applicant the building is no longer viable as a warehouse due to modern demands and structural limitations and has stood vacant since applicant said the centre would create up to 12 jobs, including roles for padel coaches, cleaning and maintenance staff, and a full-time site provision would be expanded from the existing 14 spaces to a minimum of 37, with an additional 14 overspill spaces available at the nearby Trinity House unit. Eight parking bays would be equipped with electric vehicle charging would operate from 7am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 9pm at application is currently under consideration by Rotherham Council's planning department. Emma Raducanu knocked out of Canadian Open
Emma Raducanu has been knocked out of the National Bank Open in Montreal by American fifth seed Amanda Anisimova. Raducanu lost in straight sets, with Anisimova securing a dominant 6-2 6-1 victory. The British number one struggled significantly with her serve, managing to hold it only once in each set. Despite having won their two previous encounters, Raducanu failed to secure another break point after the initial stages of the match. Anisimova's win sees her advance to the last 16, where she will play either Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya.
