Mohamed Salah tears into UEFA for statement on killing of 'Palestinian Pele': 'Can you tell us how he died?'

Hindustan Times3 days ago
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah minced no words as he tore into European football's governing body, UEFA, for not issuing a thorough and proper statement after the death of Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid in Gaza. It must be mentioned that the said player was the highest-profile Arab player in the history of the sport and was referred to as 'Palestinian Pele'. Salah, who plays for Egypt in internationals, was quick to point out that the post made by UEFA had no reference to the circumstances of Al-Obeid's death. According to the Palestine Football Association (PFA), the Arab player was killed during an Israeli strike, which targeted civilians who were waiting for aid in Southern Gaza.
In a X (formerly Twitter) post on X, UEFA wrote, "Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pelé'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times."
Mohamed Salah was quick to respond to this post, saying, "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?'
Salah's post on X is nearing 1 million likes, and it has been reposted by close to 3,000,000 users. According to the PFA, Al-Obeid was 41 years old when he was killed. He scored more than 100 goals in his decorated career.
Salah speaks up for Gaza
Mohamed Salah is one of the most high-profile footballers to speak up against the war in Gaza. He had earlier also called for humanitarian aid to be allowed immediately. He also urged the world leaders to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
According to the PFA, 325 members of its football community have been killed ever since the war began in October 2023.
According to CNN and the United Nations, more than 1300 people have been killed by Israeli forces. When it comes to football, Palestine have been recognised by FIFA since 1998. The side have featured in the last three Asian tournaments but are yet to qualify for the World Cup.

India on global surfing map after Asian C'ships: ASF secretary

MAHABALIPURAM (CHENNAI): As the curtain sets down on the Asian Surfing Championships on Tuesday evening surfers and top Asian surfing officials have lauded the 'professional mindset and expertise' in which this meet was managed. Organised by the Surfing Federation of India (SFI) and supported by the Tamil Nadu government, the Asian Surfing Championships kicked off here on August 3 with 19 countries and 114 athletes taking part. This event also served as a qualifier to surfing in next year's Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India concluded with a strong show with Ramesh Budihal's bronze medal in the Open Men's final the best performance. Shusaku Miyabe, general secretary of the Asian Surfing Federation (ASF), explained that he was initially apprehensive before the tournament. 'As soon as we finished the first inspection of the venue, we got confident with the expertise of the SFI. After we listened to their plans of organising, we felt safe in conducting it here," he told this daily after the closing ceremony. He felt that this event has got global attention in surfing. 'Surfers worldwide must be surprised after the way in which the tournament was conducted. The countries here only had positive things to say about especially the way the tournament was managed,' he said. Miyabe's pick in his stay here was the central kitchen where athletes from all the nations could gather in one place and interacted. 'This was not done in international surfing events. This gesture created a nice environment to mingle together. This is the atmosphere you would see in the Olympics' athletes villages," he said. Miyabe also felt that India has set a high standard for other nations to follow on, which could be very hard to catch. 'With this event, they have definitely put themselves on the global surfing map. Officials who have been involved in the sport for 20-30 years said that this was one of the best events and they would like to come back,' he added. Kanoa Heejae, U18 and senior champion in the men's category, enjoyed his stay here. It was his first time here. 'I learnt a lot here, I had come a week early to train and I enjoyed it,' he said. He felt that the domestic surfers should compete more internationally to increase competition standards. 'There is a little more pressure, Everyone is a lot better there. So it's good to compete and win with better surfers,' he added. India secure 4 quotas for Asiad After a strong performance, India has secured four quotas in total for next year's Asian Games. They secured two more quotas on Tuesday. They initially secured the first couple of quotas in last year's edition. Two each will go to the men and women's category. Additionally Budihal secured himself a ticket to the SurfCity El Salvador ALSA Global Finals in November. In the U18 category, the boys from India finished fifth. In the girls' category they finished fourth with a copper medal with 1450 points. The men's category was where India performed best, finishing third behind Indonesia (gold) and South Korea (silver) with 1785 points. The women finished eighth. India coach Samai Reboul was happy with the outcome from this tournament. 'We had a strategic approach to the heat. We tried to adapt to the wave and performed on limited opportunities,' he said.

In trying times in India, FC Goa turn to Asia for succour

A win will take FC Goa to the Group Stage where they will join 31 others, including Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr Margao: The rewards are aplenty. A financial windfall, possible clash against Saudi giants Al Nassr, captained by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo , and group games against some hugely-competitive sides in Asian football. But for Manolo Marquez and FC Goa , there's more at stake when they face Oman's Al Seeb in the AFC Champions League Two playoff at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday night. 'It's a nice game to play, particularly in this moment for Indian football when we are in trouble,' Manolo said during the pre-match media interaction on Tuesday. 'Not just in football, but also in life, when you don't know what will happen the day after tomorrow, you are nervous. It's normal. We are very proud to represent Indian football.' Understandably, there's nervousness in the air ahead of the crucial playoff. A win will take Goa to the Group Stage where they will join 31 others, but more importantly it could give them a reason to continue, at a time when clubs are suspending operations over uncertainty surrounding the top-tier Indian Super League (ISL). Six clubs are yet to start pre-season; three have told players and officials that their salaries are being kept on hold. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Affiliate Marketing Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo 'The players have discussed this, but right now, our focus is on this game,' said winger Brison Fernandes. 'We want to win this one.' Goa have continuity and momentum from last season, they are playing at home, so that's some advantage to carry into the game, never mind they'll be facing a side that has six Oman national team players, and another five who have been called up within the last 12 months, fighting to take the nation to the FIFA World Cup for the first time. The visitors have also recently signed Senegal centre-forward Abdoul Aziz Cisse. 'When you play at this level, you know that the opponent will be strong. It will be an equal game, and we will have options (to win). Obviously, it won't be an easy game for them too,' said Manolo. The experienced Spanish coach confirmed that all three new foreign signings – defender Pol Moreno, midfielder David Timor and striker Javier Siverio – will start against Al Seeb. Infact, there are indication he could field all six foreigners, which possibly means an explosive midfield duo of Timor and Borja Herrera. Their partnership, besides Moreno and Sandesh Jhingan in defence, could hold the key to the team's fortunes. Al Seeb's continental debut in 2022 ended in glory as they lifted the AFC Cup. The visitors, who clinched a fourth league title in 2024-25, are eyeing a second tournament involvement, after being knocked out in quarterfinals of the AFC Challenge League last season. 'FC Goa is a good team and we have been following them since last season. We need to pay attention to their foreign players if we have to secure a positive result. The weather and ground conditions are different here, so we have to adapt quickly. We've been here for three days now,' said coach Valeriu Tita, who is mourning the passing of his brother. The Romanian coach is not new to South Asia. Last season, he managed Bashundhara Kings but was dismissed despite leading the club to victories in both the Bangladesh Challenge Cup and the Federation Cup.
