India's spirits high, exports higher: Whisky gets a global glow-up
Indian whisky is hitting the high notes, drawing top billing not just by quantity but also quality. Single malts made in India are happily intriguing the connoisseur, while the less-fancied stuff is setting records by sales. Indians still drink much less liquor on average than other nationalities.
Yet, the market is compelling for global giants and local innovators in equal measure. The market for whisky, the drink of choice by a wide margin, is witnessing the most concerted premiumisation drive, while also witnessing class-leading mass market growth.
This combination of scale and dynamism provides ample opportunity to build Indian brands that can hold their own internationally. The liquor industry could very well be an underrated Indian export performer in the future - and a role model for India Inc at large. This is not a mean achievement for an industry as tightly regulated as alcoholic beverages are in India. Almost every aspect of production, distribution and consumption of liquor goes through several extra layers of scrutiny at various levels of government.
The market has, however, triumphed as young, affluent Indians become more selective about what they drink. Premiumisation begins at a lower segment of the market where consumers switch from country liquor to the euphemistic 'Indian-Made Foreign Liquor' (IMFL). This is where the volumes are bulging as numbers of those opting for imported spirits grow fast, but from a tiny base. There is space in the industry for both mass market and premium domestic brands to push the export envelope. A big chunk of these brands is controlled by multinational liquor companies that can market them abroad. Homegrown niche players create a buzz about their brands and, in the process, raise awareness globally about Indian spirits. This assertiveness is encouraging as India agrees to lower protection to liquor produced locally. The battle is about brands, and India needs to array its own selection on international shopping shelves. These should straddle a wide range of value propositions.

PM Modi Meets Canadian PM, Calls India-Canada Ties "Extremely Important"
Kananaskis, Canada: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said relations between India and Canada are "extremely important" and the two nations should work together to achieve win-win cooperation in various sectors. Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney held bilateral discussions on the margins of the G7 Summit here. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since Carney assumed office in May 2025. Congratulating Carney on his "grand victory" in the election, PM Modi said, "I am sure under your leadership, we will be able to work together in a positive way and take the India-Canada relationship forward." "I believe that India-Canada relations are extremely important and India and Canada should work together and achieve win-win cooperation in several areas," PM Modi said in his remarks ahead of the bilateral meeting. Sharing my remarks during meeting with PM @MarkJCarney of Canada. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 17, 2025 He said Canadian companies have invested in India in a big way, and Indian people have also invested in Canada substantially. "We both stand for democratic values. Together, we can strengthen democratic values, we can strengthen humanity," PM Modi said, adding that if the two nations work together and optimally utilise all their resources, "We can work for the welfare of the entire humanity." "I am extremely confident that we'll be able to do this task," said PM Modi, who is in Canada at the invitation of Carney to attend the G7 Summit. "Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit," PM Modi said in an X post. "India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law. PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship. Areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals, fertilisers and more offer immense potential in this regard," he said. In his opening remarks ahead of the meeting, Carney said it was a great honour to host PM Modi at the G7. He said India has been participating in the G7 since 2018, and this is a "testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together - from energy security, from the energy transition that you're hoping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, to the fight that we have against transnational repression, against terrorism, against other factors, and the work that we can do together." "It is my great honour to have you here. I enjoyed your intervention just now and look forward to our discussion," Carney said. PM Modi further said that he was happy to get the opportunity to visit Canada after 2015 and to be in touch with the people of Canada. This is his first visit to Canada in a decade. "India is the largest democracy in the world. During our chair of the G20 Summit, we took many initiatives for the welfare of the world, and today we are extending that resolve through the G7 summit and going to execute it through the help of this platform as well." PM Modi said this is a great opportunity "for us to serve the public good, the global good. It has always been India's intention to promote global goods, and today through G7 we have that same opportunity." Carney's invitation to PM Modi to attend the G7 Summit signalled the new government's intent to repair the ties with New Delhi that plummeted to an all-time low over the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In October last year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats after Ottawa attempted to link them to the Nijjar case. India also expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats. India had accused former prime minister Justin Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistani elements to operate from Canadian soil. Carney, an economist and political newcomer, took charge as Canada's new prime minister in March following the exit of Trudeau from the top office. After Trudeau's exit, New Delhi said it hoped to rebuild ties with Canada based on "mutual trust and sensitivity". In the last few months, the security officials of India and Canada resumed contact and both sides were looking at the possibility of appointing new high commissioners. Describing India and Canada as "vibrant democracies", the external affairs ministry said last week that New Delhi believes the forthcoming meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views and "explore pathways" to reset bilateral ties. During PM Modi's last visit in 2015, bilateral ties were elevated to the level of strategic partnership. Bilateral trade in goods in 2024 stood at USD 8.6 billion. India exported USD 4.2 billion and imported USD 4.4 billion worth of goods. Bilateral trade in services in 2024 stood at USD 14.3 billion, with India exporting USD 2.5 billion and importing USD 11.8 billion worth of services.

TOI Social Impact Summit to honour breakout work in CSR-ESG
TOI Social Impact Summit to honour breakout work in CSR-ESG The scope and reach of CSR (corporate social responsibility) has grown exponentially since its origin in 2014 as a government mandate that had corporates set aside 2% of their profits towards socially responsible work. Today, businesses own this space and are invested in supporting and funding good, impactful work across the spectrum. An allied social-investment basket is ESG, or environment, social, and governance. This area — less known but equally impactful in reach and importance — has gained traction parallelly with both corporates and their stakeholders driving work in this space. For instance, under ESG, key areas which are under focus are: environment, renewable energy, sustainability, women employees, workers' welfare, opportunities for differently abled, and health insurance, and higher representation for women on the board of directors. The demand for ESG today comes from both within and outside. There's a keen understanding that corporates should be invested in the well-being of the society they live in; that people live in societies and not just in an economy. This means consciousness that sustainability, environment, governance, diversity work towards the benefit of all stakeholders is well documented. The Times of India, over the years, has launched hugely impactful campaigns and organised summits with powerful messaging and impact on the social sector. To recognise and reward work in the CSR & ESG space, The Times of India is holding a two-day Social Impact Summit on July 11 and 12, 2025, in Mumbai. The event, presented by Malabar Gold & Diamonds, has Ernst & Young as the knowledge partner. These are the sectors that most touch Indians and have the highest relevance at the ground level. The high-powered event will see panel discussions, fireside chats and a number of participative events for the attendees. The summit will see speakers from a broad section of the sector talk of their experiences and on mechanisms to further grow and strengthen these areas. It will showcase some interesting case studies — those that can be replicated and scaled. Beneficiaries' stories will also be brought to light. The summit will honour organisations and people who have done stellar work in CSR & ESG. Early vetting will be done by our knowledge partner, while an editorial board comprising of senior TOI journalists and select domain experts will weigh in on the winners. While recognizing work in these fields, we are also looking at new sectors like AI-driven initiatives and adding sectors like 'Empowerment' and 'Gender'. CSR funds mostly go to geographic areas where the companies are located. Hence, wealthier states end up being the biggest beneficiaries: Maharashtra leads CSR spending with Rs 6,000 crore (28%), followed by Gujarat (21%), Delhi/NCR (16%), Tamil Nadu (10%), and Uttar Pradesh (8%). Coming to the ESG end, research suggests that 91% of companies face strong investor pressure to accelerate sustainable business practices, while 78% face pressure from activists. Both very large companies and MSEs have shown eagerness in adopting good ESG practices as it's not just good narrative but is actually beneficial for companies to be good corporate citizens. Leaving the world with a better environment than the one we inherited is leaving a better world for the future generations. Having more women, differently abled and diverse workforce will help corporates be more productive, while sustainable business practices not only make for a great story but will also help the bottom line.

In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata petrol costs Rs 104.21 , Rs 100.85and Rs 103.94 respectively. India imports about 80% of its oil needs and so domestic pump rates are dependent on international prices, as denominated by Indian basket of crude oil. The other factors on which domestic petrol and diesel prices depend on include central excise duty, VAT or value added tax levied by state governments, dealer and refining margins and transportation cost. As of now, petrol and diesel don't come under the purview of GST. The value of the rupee also has a bearing on domestic fuel prices. A weak rupee increases the landed cost of dollar-denominated crude oil. Petrol and diesel prices in India are reviewed daily in line with the benchmark international rate of the preceding 15 days. So state-owned fuel retailers Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) are supposed to review petrol and diesel prices daily in line with the cost. Diesel is one of the primary sources of energy for transportation of goods in India. Any change in diesel prices has a direct impact on inflation. FAQs: Why do petrol prices change daily?
