Sweden's Maja Stark opened up a one-shot lead at the US Women's Open after carding an impressive two-under-par 70 in the third round at Erin Hills.Stark birdied three holes on her penultimate round before finishing on seven under after a single bogey. The 25-year-old is chasing her second victory on the LPGA Tour, having won the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational."[I am] probably going to go work out in the morning to try to get some nerves out, but I think just keep having fun with it because when I play scared, that's when I mess up, and you can't really play scared at a course like this," Stark said.
The Swede leads Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez, who climbed to second in the leaderboard after producing a round-of-the-day 68.The pair will be last out to start their final round, at 19:10 BST on Sunday.Japanese trio Mao Saigo, Hinako Shibuno and Rio Takeda are all tied on five under in third place. Successive bogeys hampered overnight leader Saigo's pursuit of a second consecutive major title to finish with a three-over 75, while world number one Nelly Korda remains in contention and trails Stark by three after making three birdies in her final five holes. "The first thing is that I would like to rest well and then tomorrow refreshed," Saigo, who won this season's Chevron Championship, said. "I would like to start from zero. That result was not that good, but I don't think that I have to change anything. I just want to focus on my play."

'How do you go on in life after losing a child? I'm in disbelief, this cannot be happening. I don't want it to be real. I would do anything just to hold him. Words just can't describe the pain I am feeling,' she added. 'I love you so much, Weston Owen Gosa. God, I love you so much. You are my heart. I was so proud of the young man you were becoming. I just can't go on without you. Rest in Peace, my angel. You are gone too soon. April 2, 2009 - June 2, 2025,' she concluded. Gosa's post added, 'We are completely heartbroken and in shock. It was so unexpected.' 'Losing a child is the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I hope I never experience it again,' she added. 'He was the most amazing son I could have asked for. He was brilliant, smart, funny and had so much potential in life. It doesn't feel real,' she continued. 'Please keep our family and whitney in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn such a brilliant amazing life that was our son. Thank you,' Gosa concluded.

Padres' Gavin Sheets avoids head injury after crash into wall
June 3 - San Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets said Monday that he passed all concussion tests following a hard face-first collision with the wall during the Padres' Sunday home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sheets was down on the warning track for several minutes after trying to prevent Adam Frazier's fourth-inning homer. He eventually was helped off the field and diagnosed with a head bruise, hip soreness and a jammed wrist and thumb. "All things considered, felt pretty good today," Sheets said prior to San Diego's road game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. "Woke up, head felt good. Last night, I was obviously sore, mainly in the hip. But I woke up today, and all things considered for the play, I felt pretty good." The left-handed-hitting Sheets wasn't in the Monday starting lineup despite the Giants going with ace right-hander Logan Webb. Tyler Wade got the start in left. Sheets, 29, has been a major surprise for the Padres this season. He leads the team with 34 RBIs and ranks second with 11 homers. Sheets was non-tendered by the Chicago White Sox following last season and the Padres took a flier on him and signed him to minor league deal just before the start of spring training. Sheets made the team and quickly turned himself a key cog as a first baseman and designated hitter. He is batting .267 and slugging .494 in 54 games and was just recently asked to play left field because of his hot bat. "I'll do whatever -- whatever they want me to do," Sheets said. "Whatever gets me in the lineup, whatever they need me to do, I'll do." With Sheets avoiding a serious head injury, Padres manager Mike Shildt had fun with the situation in which the 6-foot-3, 235-pound utility man ran full steam into the wall. Canes' Jesper Fast announces retirement from professional hockey
June 3 - Eleven-year NHL veteran Jesper Fast announced his retirement from professional hockey earlier today. Fast, 33, played his final four seasons in Carolina and was a playoff hero for the Hurricanes in the spring of 2023. He sustained a neck injury in the final regular season game of the 2023-24 season vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets and did not compete in Carolina's recently-concluded campaign. Fast was one of several prominent veteran players who did not dress for any games during the season due to injury. Torey Krug (St. Louis), T.J. Oshie (Washington) and Tucker Poolman (Colorado) were also on long-term injured reserve in 2024-25. Fast spent his first seven seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers and earned their alternate captain sweater from 2017-20. "I never took for granted the privilege of playing in the best league in the world," said Fast. "I am grateful for all of the teammates, coaches, staff and fans from the Rangers and Hurricanes who made my time in the NHL so special, and for my family for everything they did to help me achieve and live my dream." The native of Nassjo, Sweden was an unheralded sixth-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2010 (157th overall), but surpassed a vast majority of more celebrated members of that draft class, currently ranking 24th with 94 goals and 248 points in 703 career games. Fast debuted with the Rangers in October of the 2013-14 season, but did not record his first point until dishing out an assist in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals vs. Philadelphia. He scored 55 goals and added 92 assists for the Rangers from 2013-20 and came up clutch in the playoffs, tallying three goals in both the 2014-15 and 2016-17 post-season. Fast was a five-time recipient of the Rangers' Players' Player Award from 2015-2020. He signed with the Hurricanes as a free agent ahead of the 2020-21 season. Fast played in all 82 games that season and produced career highs in goals (14), points (34) and plus/minus (+24). Canes' players tabbed him as the winner of the Steve Chiasson Award for that season. The award honors "the player who best exemplifies determination and dedication while proving to be an inspiration to his teammates through his performance and approach to the game." In his final playoff appearances in 2023, Fast became just the fourth player in Carolina franchise history to produce multiple overtime winners in a single postseason. He scored in overtime in Game 2 of Carolina's first round series vs. the New York Islanders and found the net again in the series-clinching Game 5 of the Canes' second round victory over the New Jersey Devils. --Field Level Media
