Canes' Jesper Fast announces retirement from professional hockey

Reuters03-06-2025
June 3 - Eleven-year NHL veteran Jesper Fast announced his retirement from professional hockey earlier today.
Fast, 33, played his final four seasons in Carolina and was a playoff hero for the Hurricanes in the spring of 2023. He sustained a neck injury in the final regular season game of the 2023-24 season vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets and did not compete in Carolina's recently-concluded campaign.
Fast was one of several prominent veteran players who did not dress for any games during the season due to injury. Torey Krug (St. Louis), T.J. Oshie (Washington) and Tucker Poolman (Colorado) were also on long-term injured reserve in 2024-25.
Fast spent his first seven seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers and earned their alternate captain sweater from 2017-20.
"I never took for granted the privilege of playing in the best league in the world," said Fast. "I am grateful for all of the teammates, coaches, staff and fans from the Rangers and Hurricanes who made my time in the NHL so special, and for my family for everything they did to help me achieve and live my dream."
The native of Nassjo, Sweden was an unheralded sixth-round draft pick by the Rangers in 2010 (157th overall), but surpassed a vast majority of more celebrated members of that draft class, currently ranking 24th with 94 goals and 248 points in 703 career games.
Fast debuted with the Rangers in October of the 2013-14 season, but did not record his first point until dishing out an assist in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals vs. Philadelphia.
He scored 55 goals and added 92 assists for the Rangers from 2013-20 and came up clutch in the playoffs, tallying three goals in both the 2014-15 and 2016-17 post-season.
Fast was a five-time recipient of the Rangers' Players' Player Award from 2015-2020.
He signed with the Hurricanes as a free agent ahead of the 2020-21 season. Fast played in all 82 games that season and produced career highs in goals (14), points (34) and plus/minus (+24). Canes' players tabbed him as the winner of the Steve Chiasson Award for that season. The award honors "the player who best exemplifies determination and dedication while proving to be an inspiration to his teammates through his performance and approach to the game."
In his final playoff appearances in 2023, Fast became just the fourth player in Carolina franchise history to produce multiple overtime winners in a single postseason. He scored in overtime in Game 2 of Carolina's first round series vs. the New York Islanders and found the net again in the series-clinching Game 5 of the Canes' second round victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Aussie broadcasting legend Ray Hadley comes out of retirement and takes up surprising new job

Footy broadcasting legend Ray Hadley has announced that he's taken up a surprising new role working in a butcher's shop. The former 2GB broadcaster retired from his role on the radio in December 2024, ending his 42-year career on the airwaves. The 70-year-old, who had also worked with Channel Nine, was renowned for his work presenting footy shows and calling matches. Hadley has since taken up a role in George's Fine Meats, at the Cherrybrook shopping centre in Sydney 's north-west. And he revealed how he snagged the new role, adding that he loved the job. 'The owner. Wayne is an old neighbour of mine for 20 years,' Hadley told The Courier Mail. 'I just pack the meat for him. All the old ladies come in and say: 'We miss ya Ray!' 'I was supposed to play golf today but it was too wet so I came in to help out. 'I've done it before at Xmas when he gets busy. I pack all the hams for him.' The job, though, holds sentimental value for the former footy presenter, who during his media career, also appeared on Nine's The Footy Show and Sky News Australia. 'Helping out in the butcher shop with a great old mate is a lot of fun,' he added. 'It's fitting because it makes me reflect on my late dad, who was a butcher.' While he still enjoys working with Sky and Fox, Hadley added that he has also been enjoying spending his retirement with his grandchildren. Hadley signed off from the airways in December with an impressive 13.7 per cent audience share, a jump of 2.5 per cent and a big win for the broadcaster.

Dana White puts final nail in coffin of Jon Jones' UFC return plans with brutal White House card statement

DANA WHITE has all but ruled out the prospect of Jon Jones headlining the UFC's White House card next year. The former light-heavy and heavyweight champion ended his retirement after just TWO WEEKS in July after learning of the promotion's plans to stage a fight card at Donald Trump 's residence. 4 4 4 White was initially open to having 'Bones' top the bill, but has since performed a public U-turn. The veteran promoter claimed he couldn't "trust" Jones enough to give him the honour of headlining the historic card after he pulled the plug on fighting Brit Tom Aspinall. And he brutally doubled down on his claim during the UFC 319 post-fight press conference on Sunday morning. He asked a reporter: 'What do you think Jon would do in the next couple of months that would make me trust putting him on the White House card?' 'I already said I don't trust him, and you're asking me, 'What could he do for me to trust him in the next three months?' "You don't trust him! 'I haven't talked to him at all. I would not bet on it. "If I have to make odds, it's a BILLION TO ONE [that] I put Jon Jones on the White House card.' 4 Jones, 38, was set to unify the heavyweight belts against interim titleholder Aspinall in a historic showdown at Madison Square Garden in November. But despite the UFC brass meeting his demands to be paid "f**k you money", he opted NOT to go through with the fight. The former pound-for-pound king insisted a bout with Wigan warrior Aspinall did nothing for his legacy. But he believes a fight at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue will add to it. He said: "In a recent interview, I shared that the opportunity to fight at the White House gave me something deeper to fight for, a 'why' that goes beyond paychecks or belts. If I have to make odds, it's a billion to one I put Jon Jones on the White House card." Dana White on Jon Jones fighting at the White House "Fighting for my country gives me a greater purpose! "The silver lining in all this is knowing the fans see my heart. "They see, I am ready and willing to take on anyone, to represent my country on a historic stage. "For me, it's never been just about the opponent. I'm chasing legacy, something timeless, something bigger than the moment. "So for now, I'll keep grinding, stay patient, and stay faithful. I'm ready to fight on July 4th."

New York Rangers star lives in 'perfect' basement apartment below hockey super fans

New York Rangers forward Brett Berard has caught attention after spending his offseason living in the basement of a family home in Darien, Connecticut. The 22-year-old, currently in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract, lives with the Fiorita family, a household of six who are longtime Rangers fans. Berard connected with the family through his best friend, Petey Alofsin, whose fraternity brother is the Fioritas' eldest son. When Berard mentioned he planned to train in Fairfield County over the summer, Alofsin encouraged him to reach out. 'Petey's like, 'No way, my best friend from school lives in Darien, you should talk to him,' Berard told The Wall Street Journal. The arrangement has turned out to be a comfortable and convenient one. Berard participates in family routines, joining the Fioritas for walks around the neighborhood with their minidoodle and playing basketball in the driveway. Despite his initial uncertainty, Berard says the living situation is 'literally perfect.' Missy Fiorita, the mother of the household, admitted she wasn't sure the arrangement would actually happen. 'In the back of my mind, I was like, 'This isn't gonna happen. A Ranger's not going to move into our house,' she said. But once the opportunity came up, she didn't hesitate. 'My heart was 100% in,' she told WSJ. The Fiorita family has attended many Rangers games over the years and has been in the stands for several of Berard's appearances with the team. While Berard rents an apartment in Hartford during the regular season, he chose to stay with the Fioritas over the summer for both personal and financial reasons. 'I could rent somewhere, but this opportunity came up,' he said. 'I save money on rent.' What began as a temporary arrangement has since developed into something more meaningful as, according to Missy, Berard is now seen as part of the family. 'We were all on pins and needles, but as soon as he walked in the door, it was like, 'I'm not welcoming this kid into my home for X amount of time. I'm welcoming him to being part of our family,' she said. Berard, a fifth-round pick by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut last season. He spent most of the year with the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, where he played a key role and showed promise as a developing forward. As he heads into the 2025–26 season, Berard will be looking to earn a full-time role with the Rangers and secure his next contract.
