These are the MOST popular fast foods in South Africa
Interestingly, according to a report by Mordor Intelligence, fast foods in South Africa are a R177-billion industry annually. As of May 2025, there were an estimated 5 982 fast-food restaurants in the country. This accounts for nearly 80% of all food services, reports Daily Investor .
Instead of sales, the report analysed the most visible and talked-about fast foods in South Africa. These included McDonald's, KFC, Chicken Licken, Nando's, Roman's Pizza, Debonairs, and Steers. Noteworthy is the fact that full-service, sit-down restaurants like Spur, Wimpy and Mugg & Bean were not included.
As such, the most popular fast foods in South Africa are McDonald's and KFC, leading online share of search (SoS) rankings with more than 10% each. Interestingly, Data from Standard Bank customers also revealed how South Africans spend their money on fast foods every month. Pizza, burgers or chicken, which is South Africa's most popular? Image: File
Research found that your average customer (earning R25 000 per month) spends roughly R775 monthly on fast foods in South Africa. This is over and above groceries and other food shopping. Interestingly, the higher the earnings, the higher the spending. Earners in excess of R50 000 spend R1 000 per month, and spending can peak at R1 300 per month over the holiday period.
Moreover, Mordor says negative sentiment towards brands comes from late deliveries, poor service and/or small portion sizes. More than 70% of consumers say taste consistency and credibility was their strongest driver for fast foods in South Africa. The best-selling combo deals don't exceed the R100 mark. And the 80% of fast-food purchases take place on Fridays and Saturdays, in and around paydays and holidays.

Capitec, FNB to deliver smart IDs, passports in hundreds of its branches
Capitec and First National Bank are the first banks to sign up to the home affairs department's digital partnership model that will expand access to smart ID and passport services from the existing 30 branches to hundreds more. In fulfilment of the target set by cabinet, which tasks the department with expanding its services to 1,000 bank branches by 2029, the department's director-general Tommy Makhode wrote to CEOs of Absa, African Bank, TymeBank, Capitec Bank, Discovery Bank, First National Bank, Investec Bank, Nedbank and Standard Bank on April 30 inviting them to join the digital-first new phase of the department's existing collaboration with the banking sector. 'This collaboration dates back more than a decade and has, until now, seen the successful delivery of smart ID and passport services at only 30 branches across five different banks,' the department said in a statement. However, that original model relied on the costly duplication of home affairs staff and hardware inside bank branches and failed to take advantage of technology to expand services to all rural and urban areas where bank branches exist. Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber will visit Capitec and FNB this week to provide further information on how this reform will benefit South Africans. 'It marks the beginning of the end for long travelling distances to reach home affairs services, for long queues, as well as for the green ID book with its unacceptable vulnerability to fraud and identity theft,' the department said.
