Renault waits for India's EV ecosystem to mature before entry, plans to boost SUV production

Renault is waiting for the electric vehicle supportive ecosystem to mature in India before making its entry. The French auto major is one of the few that is yet to launch any electric car in the country's passenger vehicle market despite the growing demand and competition in this space. Speaking about that, Renault India's Managing Director Venkatram Mamillapalle has said that the auto OEM is waiting for the right time to enter the Indian EV market..
Renault is aiming to boost its SUV game in the Indian market, and the new Kiger will be the first of four products coming in the next two years.
Renault just launched the facelifted version of its seven-seater MPV Triber in India on July 23, at a starting price of ₹6.29 lakh (ex-showroom). Post launch, Mamillapalle said that the company is currently doing an analysis. "We are looking for the whole ecosystem to mature before we put the product in place," he said, while also adding, 'Currently, what Renault India is looking for is the maturity of the market, the regulation and the ecosystem. All three together."

The Renault India official said that the company is going to be there in multi-powertrain options, including electric. "We will take an appropriate time to announce the launches, and one at a time. CNG and gasoline are already there. So we are talking about other energies. The endeavour to come to that level is very quick," PTI quoted him saying, while further adding, 'We have everything at arm's length, whether it's hybrid ethanol or EVs, everything is available with us, so we don't need to seek technology. It's in my kitchen. It's as and when the maturity happens, the market picks up because it's very important that there is a proper ecosystem for the adaptability of a customer."
Renault aims to boost SUV production in India
Renault currently sells three products in India, which include the Kiger SUV, Triber MPV and its entry-level hatchback Kwid. The automaker aims to emphasise more on the SUV segment, which has become the key revenue churner for the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years. Speaking about that, Mamillapalle revealed that Renault doesn't want to stay behind in the race.
In the next two years, Renault India plans to launch four products in the country. The beginning of that product onslaught is going to start with the new Kiger, which is currently under development. "But that is not just the end of the story again. It's a continuation of our lineup, which will happen," he said.
In an interaction with Reuters, Mamillapalle said that Renault would launch compact and mid-sized SUVs in India. "We are going to go offensive on the product launches moving forward," he said.
India currently accounts for less than two per cent of Renault's global sales, but it is one of five cost-competitive international hubs the carmaker is counting on to boost sales outside of its home market of Europe.

The move comes after a series of aggressive executive actions since Trump's return to the White House, marking one of the most significant shifts in US trade policy in decades. The tariff escalation began on February 1, when Trump invoked emergency powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and 25% on most goods from Canada and Mexico. These took effect on February 4, followed by a hike in Chinese tariffs to 20% on March 3. Tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods followed. On March 12, global tariffs on steel and aluminium were raised to 25% under Section 232, and later doubled to 50% for all countries except the UK by June 4. A 25% tariff on countries still importing Venezuelan oil took effect April 2, with further duties on automobiles and auto parts phased in. April 2 marked a major shift as Trump declared a national emergency over the US trade deficit and imposed a 10% universal baseline tariff from April 5. A planned set of 'reciprocal' tariffs for 57 countries was suspended for 90 days—excluding China. India, despite being one of the United States' largest trading partners, was excluded from tariff relief under Trump's revised trade regime. On July 7, Washington confirmed country-specific tariffs, and month-end, it had finalised bilateral deals with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and the UK—capping their tariffs at around 15%. India, however, was left out and now faces the full 25% duty on its exports, effective August 1.

Hyderabad: The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently took action against unrecognised collaborative agreements between Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and foreign educational providers, including those facilitated by EdTech companies. This decision has caused concern among several students who have already enrolled in online courses. N. Vinit Kumar from Hyderabad, who has completed a in Computer Science, enrolled in the Cognitive Sciences program, taking credit courses in Cognitive Neuropsychology and Neurolinguistics. He aims to explore a multidisciplinary area that intersects perception, language, and artificial intelligence. 'It helps me understand the intricacies of Large Language Models and training,' he added. While SWAYAM and NPTEL do offer some courses, the specific interdisciplinary areas provided by foreign HEIs on EdTech platforms offer a competitive advantage. Srivalli S. from Visakhapatnam noted that she completed her BA in Mathematics and now wishes to branch out into Data Science and AI. However, the UGC directive has come as a shock for many students like her who cannot afford to pursue regular courses that require attendance in physical classes. The UGC directive follows an earlier notice dated December 12, 2023, relating to academic collaborations and foreign campuses under its 2022 and 2023 regulations. The UGC has observed a surge in unauthorised twinning, joint degree, and dual degree programs, some of which are promoted through misleading advertisements by EdTech firms via newspapers, social media, and television. 'These arrangements often involve institutions not approved by the Commission, resulting in degrees that hold no legal or academic validity within India,' it warned. The Commission further cautioned that such practices violate existing regulatory frameworks and pose a serious risk to students' academic and career prospects. Students enrolled in these programs are warned that the degrees obtained through these collaborations are not recognised, and any investment in such programs is made at their own risk. Furthermore, the UGC stated that legal action will be initiated against defaulting HEIs and EdTech entities under applicable laws and regulations. Institutions found to be complicit may face penalties ranging from derecognition to legal prosecution. The Commission emphasised the importance of academic integrity and urged all stakeholders to uphold standards that align with national education policies. As part of its regulatory mission, the UGC continues to monitor education-related partnerships to ensure that Indian academic institutions maintain credibility and offer quality-assured programs. 'The move also aims to curb the commodification of education and protect students from misleading international affiliations that lack academic merit.' However, at the same time, there is not a single state university in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh that offers even basic courses such as History of Science. This absence makes it difficult for students to comprehend how different branches of science have evolved over the past 100 years. Speaking to The Hans India, a former senior official of the erstwhile Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), now reconstituted as TGCHE, said, 'There are several courses available in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, as well as Science and Technology streams, but students are not gaining foundational knowledge. This lack of foundation leaves them confused in making informed decisions about choosing courses at the intersection of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Technology.'

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday said that President Donald Trump and his team negotiating the trade agreement with India have been 'frustrated' with New Delhi, CNBC reported. 'India came to the table early,' Bessent said in an interview to the news channel. 'They've been slow rolling things. So I think that the president, the whole trade team has been frustrated with them.' The treasury secretary said that India had also been a large buyer of sanctioned Russian oil that was then being resold as refined products. 'So, you know, they have not been a great global actor,' he added. Bessent's comments came a day after Trump announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India from August 1. Washington had added that India will also have to pay a ' penalty ' for buying a large portion of its military equipment and fuel from Russia amid the war on Ukraine. However, he did not specify the quantum of the 'penalty'. Later on Wednesday, however, the US president said that his administration was still negotiating the final tariff rate with India. 'They [India] have one of the highest tariffs in the world now, they're willing to cut it very substantially,' Trump said during a press briefing. 'We are talking to India now, we'll see what happens…You'll know by the end of this week.' On Wednesday evening, India's commerce ministry said that New Delhi was studying the implications of the US' decision, and that it would take all steps necessary to secure national interests. 'India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months,' the ministry said. 'We remain committed to that objective.' The US will be reimposing so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries that have not negotiated separate trade agreements with it by August 1. Trump had announced high levies in April, before pausing those tariffs at a reduced 10% rate to allow time for negotiations. Despite an extended deadline, Trump has only secured a handful of deals. Trump had said on June 27 that New Delhi could sign a 'very big' trade deal with Washington soon. On July 2, the White House said that the deal was close to being finalised and would be announced soon. An Indian team led by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had visited the US in May to negotiate the agreement. Following this, a team of negotiators from the US was in India for a week in June. Trump sets 10% to 41% tariffs on dozens of countries On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order formally reimposing the so-called reciprocal tariffs ranging between 10% and 41% on US imports from dozens of countries and foreign locations, including for India. The tariffs will take effect on August 7. The rates were also set at 20% for Taiwan, 30% for South Africa, 20% for Bangladesh and 19% for Pakistan, among other countries.
