Vaibhavi Merchant was honoured for her work in Dhindhora Baje Re, a song from Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh's rom-com Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Vaibhavi Merchant, the choreographer behind Bollywood hits like Kajra Re, Crazy Kiya Re, Aaja Nachle and Kamli, just added another feather to her cap. She won her second National Film Award for Best Choreography in the 71st edition of the prestigious ceremony. She was honoured for her work in Dhindhora Baje Re, a song from Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh's rom-com Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Following her win, the notable choreographer shared a note on her Instagram account on Sunday, August 3, expressing her gratitude for being bestowed with another National Film Award. She won her first one in 2000 for the song Dholi Taaro Dhol Baaje from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
'Today is an extremely special day. As an artist, there is no greater honour than being recognised by the government – when they value and celebrate your art. To receive the National Award for Dhindora Baje Re, 25 years after Dholi Taro Dhol Baaje, I am truly overwhelmed and beyond words," she wrote at the beginning of her post.
Vaibhavi Merchant Thanked Karan Johar For Making Her A Part Of RRKPK
In her note, Vaibhavi thanked the Chairperson of the jury, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, the other respected members, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for 'considering her worthy of this recognition." Then, she went on to express her gratitude to RRKPK's director, Karan Johar, for giving her the chance to choreograph the song. She said, 'My heartfelt gratitude to the man who made it all possible, Karan Johar, for bringing Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani to life and giving me the chance to be part of something so meaningful."
Furthermore, she extended her heartfelt gratitude to the cast of the film, including Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Tota Roy Chowdhury, the crew, which included ADs, background dancers, choreo assistants, technicians, and spot boys, and obviously her own team. Last but not least, the choreographer also expressed how her family had been a pillar of support for her during her journey. She continued, 'To my family-and especially my mum-you've been my loudest cheerleader and quietest strength. I owe this to you."

Vaibhavi added, 'To win something earned through honesty and hard work– that's the kind of recognition I truly value. And this National Award feels exactly like that. I'm still letting it sink in, but my heart is full. This song was a special experience in many ways. There was a purity in the process of revisiting classical roots, of telling a story through movement, of blending tradition with cinema in a way that resonated."
Towards the end of her post, Vaibhavi also praised Ranveer and Tota Roy for their dance skills, despite not being trained classical dancers. She said, 'To see Ranveer and Tota Roy Chowdhury, who aren't classical dancers, immerse themselves so beautifully into the performance-that's the magic of trust, dedication, and love for the art."
'This award isn't just for me-it's for the art form itself," mentioned the National Award-winning choreographer, as she ended her post.

Urvashi Questions 71st National Award Jury: "'How Did Shah Rukh Khan Win Best Actor?"

New Delhi: The 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, and Shah Rukh Khan 's fans had a big reason to celebrate. The superstar bagged his first-ever National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan – a major milestone in his 33-year-long career. But not everyone is convinced about the decision. South actress Urvashi, who won Best Supporting Actress for Ullozhukku, has opened up about what she feels is a lack of fairness by the jury. In a chat with Asianet News, she pointed out a major concern: veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan only received the Best Supporting Actor award, even though his performance, according to her, deserved more. 'Vijayaraghavan is such a great actor. What exactly did the jury consider to distinguish between Vijayaraghavan's and Shah Rukh Khan's performances? How did one become a supporting actor and the other the best actor? On what criteria? We should raise such questions, as we too are taxpaying citizens. Kutettan (referring to Vijayaraghavan) has decades of experience in cinema. The film wasn't a big-budget, 250-day shoot kind of project like those in other languages,' she said. Urvashi further talked about how committed Vijayaraghavan was to his role in Pookkaalam, where he played a 100-year-old man. She mentioned that she was offered the role of his on-screen partner in the same film but had to say no because of the intense makeup demands. 'I was initially approached to play his pair in Pookkaalam. Still, I declined because the role required me to undergo a significant physical transformation, for which I would have had to be in the makeup chair for several hours. I told them, even if you pay me crores, I wouldn't do it. But he, at his age, endured all of that and performed. That alone deserves at least a Special Mention. How is he only a supporting actor? On what basis was that decided? That's all I'm asking — there must be some fairness,' Urvashi added. While Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail, Vijayaraghavan's award came in the supporting actor category. He played opposite veteran actress K. P. A. C. Leela in Pookkaalam, a Malayalam film released in 2023. Interestingly, Urvashi also shared her Best Supporting Actress award with Janki Bodiwala, who won for her work in the Gujarati film Vash.

Not Karan Johar or Yash Chopra, Meet the man who gave Shah Rukh Khan a home and helped shape his rise to stardom, his name is...

Shah Rukh Khan's first-ever National Award for Jawan in 2024 was celebrated by millions, but one congratulatory message stood out. It wasn't from a fan or a co-star, it came from the man who gave him his first break and even a roof when he had nowhere to stay in Mumbai. The throwback that touched a superstar Film producer and actor Viveck Vaswani shared a nostalgic photo on X, writing, 'Congratulations to Shah Rukh Khan for the National Award! Long overdue but well-deserved!' Shah Rukh's reply was as personal as it was telling, 'Thanks for the wishes. It all started with you… Raju finally became a gentleman.' That one sentence summed up a friendship that began in the early '90s and quietly shaped Bollywood history. Thank u for the wishes. All started with you. Raju finally ban gaya gentleman. — Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk) August 3, 2025 The bond between SRK and Viveck was cemented during Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), a romantic drama directed by Aziz Mirza. Shah Rukh played Raju Mathur, an ambitious engineer in Mumbai, while Viveck not only co-produced the film but also played Lovelal Kukkreja. The movie, starring Juhi Chawla, Nana Patekar, and Amrita Singh, was the turning point in SRK's career. The man who opened his doors When a young SRK moved from Delhi to Mumbai, it was Viveck Vaswani who welcomed him into his home and guided him into the industry. They went on to work together in films like English Babu Desi Mem, Kabhie Haan Kabhie Naa, and King Uncle. Though life has taken them on different paths, Shah Rukh now runs a film empire while Viveck is a school dean, the warmth hasn't faded. As Viveck once said, 'We don't talk often, but when we do, nothing feels changed.' SRK's gratitude after the win Following his National Award, Shah Rukh posted on social media, thanking the jury, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and his fans, 'I am overwhelmed by the love. Thank you for this honour.' Released in 2024, Jawan saw SRK in a dual role, mixing action, drama, and a social message on corruption. The film featured Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, and Sanya Malhotra. His next big project, King, will see him share the screen with daughter Suhana, Deepika Padukone, and Abhishek Bachchan.

Urvashi questions Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win, demands clarity on jury's criteria, says 'on what...'

On August 1, when the 71st National Film Awards were announced, Shah Rukh Khan's fans erupted in joy — the superstar had finally won his first National Award for Best Actor (Jawan) after 33 years in cinema. But not everyone was convinced the decision was fair. Actor Urvashi, who bagged Best Supporting Actress for Ullozhukku, publicly questioned the jury's reasoning, pointing out what she felt were inconsistencies in the awards. What did Urvashi say? Speaking to Asianet News, Urvashi asked, 'Vijayaraghavan is such a great actor. What exactly did the jury consider to distinguish between Vijayaraghavan's and Shah Rukh Khan's performances? How did one become a supporting actor and the other the best actor? On what criteria? We should raise such questions, as we too are taxpaying citizens.' She argued that Vijayaraghavan's portrayal in Pookkaalam was far from a small feat — it required physical transformation and intense preparation. She revealed that she had declined a role opposite him in the same film because of the long makeup hours required. 'Even if you pay me crores, I wouldn't do it. But he, at his age, endured all of that and performed. That alone deserves at least a Special Mention.' The awards in question Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey (12th Fail). Vijayaraghavan received Best Supporting Actor for his role as a 100-year-old man in Pookkaalam. Urvashi shared Best Supporting Actress with Janki Bodiwala (Vash). Urvashi stressed her concerns weren't about undermining anyone's talent, but about transparency. 'That's all I'm asking — there must be some fairness.' Who is Urvashi? Urvashi is a veteran of South Indian cinema with a career spanning over four decades and more than 700 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. She started acting at age 10 and has two National Film Awards, six Kerala State Film Awards, and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards to her name. Her acclaimed performances include Kazhakam, Achuvinte Amma, and Charles Enterprises.
