Pizza with dill pickles 'underwhelms' critics as it lands in grocery store freezers
A controversial pizza topping is coming to a Target store near you.
California Pizza Kitchen has unveiled its new frozen dill pickle pizza, calling it "the ultimate cheesy and tangy pizza combination," according to a news release.
"This restaurant-style 'za features real dill pickles, rich mozzarella cheese and flavorful dill seasoning over a creamy garlic sauce all on top of a crispy thin crust," California Pizza Kitchen said in the release.
The new frozen pizza will be sold for $8.49 at Target stores nationwide starting this month.
It follows in the footsteps of another frozen pizza brand that launched a dill pickle pizza earlier this year.
Caulipower, which has a cauliflower crust, debuted its dill pickle pizza in February exclusively at Whole Foods.
The California-based company boasts about the pizza's nutritional value, which includes 14 grams of protein per serving — and that it's made without any artificial ingredients, colors or preservatives.
Target also sells a frozen pickle pizza made by its Good & Gather line.
"We're always looking for new and exciting flavor ideas to inspire our next pizzas," said Michelle Hlivka, brand manager for California Pizza Kitchen's frozen foods.
"As we continue to see the ongoing and quite debatable pickle craze taking over the culinary world, we knew we could deliver this 'it' flavor while showcasing our dedication to the exploration of exceptional taste."
Pickles on pizza have become more commonplace recently, with Domino's introducing a version in Japan.
Pizza Hut released a Nashville hot chicken pizza with pickles at a New York City location in 2023.
The dill pickle pizza has also been served at the Wisconsin State Fair.
A 23-year-old on X who often posts about food at the grocery store claimed to have been disappointed by the dill pickle pizza, writing, "Had that dill pickle pizza and was underwhelmed to say the least, very little pickle taste."
Meanwhile, the company maintains its own point of view.
"Between the tangy crunch of dill pickles, rich mozzarella cheese and dill over a creamy garlic sauce, this is the California Pizza Kitchen frozen take on the viral flavor profile you can enjoy at home," said Hlivka.
"What can I say? It's kind of a big dill."

Mexican band Grupo Firme cancels US show, says visas suspended by Trump administration
The popular Mexican regional music band Grupo Firme announced on Friday that it was canceling a performance in a music festival in California over the weekend after the United States government suspended the musicians' visas. It comes after the US State Department has revoked visas of a number of Mexican musicians for playing a genre of music that it says glorifies cartel violence. The group, which has soared to international fame playing Mexican regional music, said in a statement posted on its Instagram account that the visas of them and their team are currently under 'administrative review by the US Embassy' and that it would make it 'impossible' for them to perform in the La Onda Fest to be held in the city of Napa Valley, California on June 1. But the post didn't detail what it would mean in the long term for the musical group. The US Embassy in Mexico and the State Department said that visa cases are confidential according to US law and couldn't provide more information on the case. The suspension is just the latest in a series of moves the administration of US President Donald Trump has taken targeting Mexican artists in the genre, who in some cases have glorified the leaders of cartels as sort of Robin Hood figures. While the genre of 'narco-corridos' has stirred controversy, much of the music also speaks to the harsh realities facing Mexican youth caught in cartel violence. Two months ago, the Mexican musical group Los Alegres del Barranco was sanctioned after it projected images of the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel at a concert in the western state of Jalisco. 'I'm a firm believer in freedom of expression, but that doesn't mean that expression should be free of consequences,' US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said at the time. 'The last thing we need is a welcome mat for people who extol criminals and terrorists.' But Grupo Firme has taken steps in recent months to distance itself from the facet of the musical genre glorifying criminal groups, announcing in April shortly after the controversy that it would not sing such music in concerts.

Why Taylor Swift Is Reportedly 'Relieved' Her Friendship With Blake Lively Is Over
Taylor Swift is allegedly in her 'relieved' era after ending her friendship with Blake Lively over the Justin Baldoni legal drama. A source told the Daily Mail that the singer is 'relieved the relationship is over' because she can now 'see all the red flags' she missed in their friendship. The source claimed that Swift put up with Lively's 'antics for too long because she's a loyal friend.' More from SheKnows Every Star Taylor Swift Has Feuded With The source's claims come after Baldoni's legal team withdrew a subpoena sent to Swift, officially ending her involvement in the It Ends With Us director's legal battle with Lively, which was supposedly the cause of her feud with her longtime friend. Baldoni is suing his It Ends With Us co-star and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, alleging that they tried to destroy his career with false allegations of sexual harassment. Baldoni's lawsuit came after Lively sued him and a cast of publicists for allegedly launching an online whisper campaign against her in retaliation for her harassment complaints. Swift was dragged into the mix when she was referenced in Baldoni's lawsuit as a 'megacelebrity friend' of Lively and Reynolds, whom he alleged they used to pressure him to accept Lively's script rewrites. He claimed Lively referred to Swift as one of her 'dragons' and alleged he was invited to a meeting with Swift and Reynolds where the singer praised Lively's edits, which Baldoni took as a sign that he was expected to change the screenplay. Swift was subpoenaed in the case, and a court filing from Bryan Freedman, Baldoni's lead attorney, stated that he was looking for evidence that Lively's lawyer threatened Swift's legal team that they would release texts between the two friends if Swift did not issue a statement of support for Lively on social media. Lively's team has called Freedman's suggestion that such evidence exists 'unequivocally and demonstrably false.' In a statement issued on May 22, via Variety, a spokesperson for Lively accused Baldoni and his team of trying to exploit Swift's fame to sensationalize their claims. 'We are pleased that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties have withdrawn their harassing subpoenas to Taylor Swift and her law firm,' the spokesperson said. 'We supported the efforts of Taylor's team to quash these inappropriate subpoenas directed to her counsel, and we will continue to stand up for any third party who is unjustly harassed or threatened in the process.' 'The Baldoni and Wayfarer team have tried to put Taylor Swift, a woman who has been an inspiration for tens of millions across the globe, at the center of this case since day one,' Lively's spokesperson added. 'Faced with having to justify themselves in federal court, they folded. At some point, they will run out of distractions from the actual claims of sexual harassment and retaliation they are facing.'Best of SheKnows Elizabeth Hurley & Billy Ray Cyrus, & More of the Best Red Carpet Debuts From Celebrity Couples Over the Years Yoko Ono's Daughter Kyoko, & 22 Surprising Celebrities That Were In or Linked to a Cult 7 Ways Chrissy Teigen Has Altered Her Appearance Over the Years: Plastic Surgery & More
