Samsung executive defends Galaxy S25 Edge from critique: 'just hold it'
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is a stunning feat of engineering, but compromises had to be made in more than one key aspect. Blake Gaiser — director of smartphone product management at Samsung Electronics America — defended the phone's shortcomings in a recent interview.
In Gaiser's eyes, the S25 Edge isn't a phone where users should focus on the specifications. He says that he basically 'gave up' on trying to woo consumers with the hardware packed within the slim chassis. Instead, Gaiser now simply asks people to hold the phone before passing any judgment on it.
— Blake Gaiser, Tom's Guide, June 2025
The Galaxy S25 Edge is, in Gaiser's opinion, a phone for the people who want a large and powerful phone without the weight and unnecessary features that they don't need. Gaiser defends the lack of telephoto zoom by saying that most users don't need it. He claims that 'people don't really understand the quality of their photos,' and as such can still take excellent pictures without telephoto zoom.

One aspect that I personally dislike about the new slim phone craze is the smaller battery. Battery life has been a major concern for me for many years, but Gaiser says that most users just need 'all-day' battery. The S25 Edge battery isn't as bad as I had initially feared, so Gaiser is right about that. However, I would have definitely preferred a thicker phone with a bigger battery.
But that's the entire selling point of the Edge, and something that Gaiser said multiple times throughout the interview. In his eyes, the slimness, weight, and distribution of said weight makes the S25 Edge a very compelling sidegrade to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and a formidable competitor to the upcoming iPhone 17 Air.
Apple is, of course, not far behind in the new slim phone race. The iPhone 17 Air is reportedly going to replace the iPhone Plus model, which had previously replaced the mini model. Reports indicate that the Air will have similar compromises to the Edge, opting instead for a more elegant form. But only time will tell whether super slim phones catch on, or whether the S25 Edge will flop.

Fairphone is going all out to make its next phone truly modular
Fairphone is a rather unique company in the smartphone space. The Dutch electronics manufacturer is one of the few that specializes in modular smartphones, a type of devices that heavily minimizes environmental impact because companies that make them typically use recycled materials. In addition to modular smartphones, Fairphone also provides replacement parts for its smartphones. The company's most recent product, Fairphone 5, made its debut back in April 2024. Because its phones are meant to be kept for longer periods of time, Fairphone promises five major OS updates and 10 years of security updates. The next Fairphone device will be even more customizable, at least according to the latest report from The German website got their hands on a picture showing the front part of the Fairphone 6, but the most important difference compared to the previous models would only be visible on the back 6 is supposed to feature a modular back panel, allowing owners to customize their phone to look the way they want. Apart from the fact that the phone will be available in three different colors – Horizon Black, Cloud White, and Forest Green, Fairphone 6 will also feature a two-part back cover, so the upper and lower covers could be of different colors. Fairphone 6 | Image credit: Besides that, Fairphone 6 will feature replaceable rear and front cameras, display, battery, earpiece, speaker, and USB-C port. But wait, there's more! Fairphone will sell interchangeable accessories through different partner retailers, including a card holder, a lanyard, and a ring that's supposed to make holding the device comfier. Unfortunately, no details about its specs are known at the moment except for the fact that it will pack at least 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. Also, Dutch publication Nieuwe Mobiel claims Fairphone 6 could be officially introduced on June 25. As far as the price goes, Fairphone 6 is rumored to cost as low as €550, a much lower amount compared to Fairphone 5's €700 price tag. It's unclear if Murena will bring this model to the United States like it did with the Fairphone 4 model two years ago, but one can only hope.

ChatGPT might eventually challenge Google Search, but the AI platform has a long way to go
There has been plenty of talk about the upcoming demise of Google Search as many analysts are forecasting that AI platforms like ChatGPT will eventually replace Google Search. But we are a long way from seeing AI apps and platforms completely take over the search business from Google. This year, Google Search has been processing 13.5 billion search requests a day compared to 1 billion search requests a day for ChatGPT. While ChatGPT ties with TikTok for 12th place, a position that many might consider outstanding after such a brief period of time, it doesn't come close to Google and makes you wonder when AI will become a stronger rival for the current Search leader. In case you're wondering, after Google, Instagram search is second with 6.5 billion searches followed by Chinese tech company Baidu; the latter runs 5 billion search requests daily. Snap and Amazon are numbers four and five with daily search numbers of 4 billion and 3.5 billion each day. respectively. The data was generated by NP Digital. By the way, ChatGPT reached 1 billion searches a day 5.5 times faster than Google Search did and that bodes well for the future placement of the AI LLM on this list. Also interesting, 60% of Google Search requests end without a click. Reading the answers provided by AI Overviews, Featured Snippets, and Knowledge Panels on Google Search, all of which offer immediate answers to a question without having to go to another website, typically ends a search request immediately. Top apps used for search requests based on average daily searches handled daily. | image credit-Visual Capitalist A report from the Visual Capitalist suggests that for ChatGPT to surpass Google in terms of daily search requests, the AI platform will have to be integrated into more browsers, search engines, and in more devices. ChatGPT would have to outdo Google with its ability to retrieve and index the open web. And perhaps most importantly, those who traditionally use search engines would have to feel comfortable using AI. The same source says that ChatGPT offers more useful responses than Google does for the following tasks: Complex reasoning Creative writing Explaining things in plain language Summarizing long content Interactive problem-solving Using ChatGPT to get answers related to the above tasks means avoiding the long list of multiple recommendations made by Google Search. One could say that in these five situations, ChatGPT has already surpassed Google as being more useful. Still, if you're looking for a search tool to confirm a quick fact or a specific website, Google Search might be best. On the other hand, if you need something explained to you, or there is a process that you want to know about, ChatGPT will give you a better, more detailed response. This doesn't mean that ChatGPT and other AI platforms can't become the search leaders eventually. It means that right now some of the public is scared of AI, and having heard that it is prone to hallucinations, would prefer to stick with Google Search. The first step to getting the public used to using AI to replace currently used search tools is to have device owners turn to AI instead of digital assistants. If an iPhone user asks Siri a question that she can't answer, the assistant will ask if it is okay to have ChatGPT respond. If the user answers in the affirmative, a response from ChatGPT is shown. On Android devices, Google is starting to replace the Google Assistant with its Gemini LLM (Large Language Model). Queries are sent to Google's servers running the AI models and answers are sent from these servers. When the user needs to set an alarm or timer via Gemini, a Utility Extension is used which allows Google's Gemini to create the requested timer or alarm.

Honor's next phone is a bit too traditional, but it should be very cheap
Honor X6c | Image credit: YTCHB The entry-level and mid-range segments of the smartphone market are very competitive because of the large number of new devices that are coming out every week. Not only that, but customers are now holding on to their phones for a longer time than in the past. Honor is one of the many phone makers that are trying to compete with more established brands like Motorola, Samsung and Xiaomi. The newly introduced Honor 400 series is a pure example of how the Chinese company is improving its products in an attempt to gain more market share from the X-series is Honor's lineup of more affordable smartphones. Despite being cheaper, these phones still offer great value for money and feature a premium look more often than not. The next phone in the X-series is Honor X6c, a device that hasn't been announced yet. However, several high-resolution renders of the phone have already been leaked, alongside key specs. At first glance, Honor X6c feels like an average, yet very stylish, affordable smartphone, so the success of the phone might come down to whether or not Honor will price this competitively. Honor X6c | Image credit: YTECHB For tech-savvy, Honor X6c uses a MediaTek Helio G81 Ultra processor, which is paired with 6/8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. The smartphone sports a very decent 6.61-inch TFT LCD display with 1604 x 720 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh far as the camera is concerned, the report claims the phone comes with a standard dual-camera system that includes a 50-megapixel main sensor and a much smaller QVGA snapper. There's also a secondary 5-megapixel selfie camera on the front. Honor X6c is powered by a 5,300 mAh battery with 35W wired charging speed support. The phone will also feature IP64 rating and will ship with Magic OS 9.0 based on Android 15. On paper, Honor X6c feels like a dumbed down version of its bigger brother, Honor X7c, which made its debut on the market back in October. The former has slightly smaller display, battery, and camera, as well as a different chipset. What sets the Honor X6c apart from the previous model is the AI button on the left side. All in all, the X6c should be more affordable than the X7c judging by the leaked specs. Just for reference, Honor X7c costs around €150, the upcoming model should be even cheaper.
