Ángel Di María Returns To Boyhood Club Rosario Central In Argentina
Ángel Di María, who scored in the final of the FIFA 2022 World Cup for Argentina against France, has returned to his boyhood club Rosario Central.
Supporters in Rosario were absolutely delighted to hear the news this week, as the club announced that its biggest ever export would be retuning home to play in the Argentinian league. Now 37 years old, this will surely be the last stop in Ángel Di María's fine career.

Every single club in South America has a hero that leaves for pastures new in Europe. Seeking international glory and, of course, a monumental pay rise.
Generally, fanbases of those teams will hold a lot of affection for that player, especially if they are successful before they leave. The hope will be that after they make their money and enjoy glory in Europe, that one day they will return again.
Finishing a career off like this is never usually the best economic option for a player but it can be their way of saying thanks to their first club or accepting some sort of call of duty to return. Perhaps to help the club financially as well as on the pitch.
Neymar's recent move to Santos is a fine example of this return. Neymar won the Copa Libertadores with the club before he went to Barcelona but now he arrives to play for a Santos side that is in a relegation battle. His presence alone has helped drive international coverage and bring in better players.

Gonzalo Montiel recently moved back to River Plate after years in Europe and the majesty of scoring the winning penalty in a World Cup final shoot-out. Radamel Falcao has gone home to Colombia; playing for Millonarios in Bogota and perhaps most spectacularly Óscar Cardozo, who is now 42, has spent almost a decade back playing in his native Paraguay after a decade abroad.
Whether it is to their old club or the team they supported as a boy, many latin players tend to hang up their boots at home. For those that have raised children in Europe it is also an opportunity to bring the family home, and of course for many it means another crack at the Copa Libertadores.
For Rosario Central the return of Ángel Di María is a dream come true, because the bigger the star the more offers they have to end their career elsewhere. Di María certainly could have moved to the MLS or Saudi Arabia but he decided to bring his family back to Argentina after a career of incredible success in Europe.

Since he left Argentina in 2007 Di María has been talismanic in international triumphs with Argentina and also won the UEFA Champions League at Real Madrid. The left-footed attacker also won countless titles in France with PSG, as well as league and cup championships in Spain and Portugal, making him one of the most storied soccer players of all time.
Rosario Central has been the best team in the 'Liga Profesional' table in Argentina this season, winning 10 and losing just one of their 16 regular season games. However after recent defeat to play-off finalists Huracán; Di María has work to do in the second part of this season if Rosario Central are to enjoy any silverware in 2025. Di María didn't win anything with Rosario before he left. Perhaps a trophy with his home club is the last thing on his football to-do list.
Regardless, Di María is still playing at a level where he should make a big impact on domestic football in Argentina. His wand of a left-foot and tricky dribbling will dazzle defences across the country, and he will be applauded by away fans in every stadium after his legendary success with the national team.
Di María's good friend Lionel Messi grew up playing for city rivals Newell's Old Boys. The ultimate dream for any Argentine is to see Messi return to play in his home country and just imagine those two international companions facing off in a fearsome Rosario derby. That dream may be unlikely, but is still alive, as Lionel Messi continues to prepare for the FIFA 2026 World Cup playing his club soccer at Inter Miami.

East African trio score unexpected hat-trick as CHAN hosts
The African Nations Championships (CHAN) quarter-finals begin Friday after a bruising group stage, with security controversies and the unexpected successes of the host nations dominating discussion. The month-long championship, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, has brought a football revival to a region that has rarely hosted, or shone in, continental competitions. The three hosts all topped their groups as they made it into knock-out phase. The 19-team tournament has been a dream for Kenya's Harambee Stars after years of underperforming at the continental level. Buoyed by the promise of hefty cash bonuses from President William Ruto, they beat two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo both 1-0, and drew 1-1 with Angola before ensuring a last eight-place with another 1-0 win, this time over Zambia. They open the quarter-finals against Madagascar in Nairobi on Friday. "Kenya stands proud behind your tactical and superb performance," Sports Minister Salim Mvurya said after the match on Sunday. "You have shown the world that our determination, dedication and unyielding spirit never fades, even when faced with the unimaginable." It has not all been smooth sailing for Kenya. Controversial ticketing measures and chaotic crowds have brought repeated fines, with the continental governing body instructing the Kenyan football federation (FKF) to implement better security or lose out on hosting the upcoming matches. - Cranes take flight - Uganda have also made history by reaching the quarters for the first time in seven CHAN appearances. The Cranes clawed their way back after losing 3-0 to Algeria in their opening match in Kampala to beat Guinea 3-0 and Niger 1-0. They secured their place in the quarters in a nail-biting six-goal thriller, converting one penalty in the 88th minute and another six minutes into added time to draw 3-3 with South Africa. Uganda next play Senegal, who finished second on goal difference behind Sudan in Group D. Midfielder Allan Okello has inspired his team, netting two goals against Guinea and a penalty against South Africa. "Okello has become the engine of the Ugandan team," said Kenyan football analyst Sedrick Musumba. "He's someone who can attract an opponent while creating spaces that gives his colleagues spaces to score." Tanzania breezed through Group B with three wins and a draw. The Taifa Stars, making their third tournament appearance, host north African giants Morocco in the quarters aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time. "It's wonderful and incredible to achieve this feat at CHAN, especially after all the sacrifices. Nothing was easy," said Tanzanian coach Hemed 'Morocco' Suleiman. The Moroccan team won the competition in 2018 and 2020. "We respect them, but we're not afraid," said Suleiman. "I know the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium will be full because the Tanzanian people now believe in their team." Sudan face Algeria in the fourth quarter-final at Kampala's Mandela Stadium on Saturday. Quarter-final fixtures (all times GMT): Aug 22: Kenya v Madagascar, Nairobi (1400); Tanzania v Morocco, Dar es Salaam (1700) Aug 23: Uganda v Senegal, Kampala (1400); Sudan v Algeria, Zanzibar City (1700) Semi-finals Aug 26: 1A-2B v 1D-2C, Dar es Salaam (1430); 1B-2A v 1C-2D, Kampala (1730) 3rd place Aug 29: Kampala (1500) Final Aug 30: Nairobi (1500) Leading scorers: 3: Lamlioui (MAR), Okello (UGA), Kutumela (RSA) 2: Abdelrazeg (SUD), Bayazid (ALG), Mzize (TAN), Kaporal (ANG), Odhiambo (KEN), Ogam (KEN), Kitambala (DR Congo), Hrimat (MAR), Rafanomezantsoa (MAD) CHAN champions 2009: DR Congo 2011: Tunisia 2014: Libya 2016: DR Congo 2018: Morocco 2020: Morocco 2022: Senegal Note: Eligibility for CHAN is restricted to home-based players. NWSL's Pride finalize record deal with Mexico's Tigres for Lizbeth Ovalle
The Orlando Pride acquired Lizbeth Ovalle from Mexico's Tigres UANL on Thursday for an international record transfer fee. The Pride did not disclose terms of the agreement, but a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Pride would pay a fee of $1.5 million. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement with the National Women's Soccer League club had not yet been formally signed. The transfer fee surpasses the $1.3 million fee Arsenal paid Liverpool for Canadian striker Olivia Smith in the English Women's Super League last month. That broke the previous record fee of $1.1 million that Chelsea paid the San Diego Wave for defender Naomi Girma in January. Ovalle, who is known as Jacquie, was signed by the Pride through the 2027 season, with a mutual option for 2028. "I'm very happy to join Orlando Pride,' Ovalle said in a statement released by the Pride. 'I'm coming with the clear objective of winning titles and leaving a mark with the Club. I'm ready to give it my all and help Orlando Pride continue to be a leading team.' A 25-year-old winger, Ovalle has led the Tigres of Liga MX Femenil to six titles since joining the club in 2017. She is the team's all-time leading scorer with 136 goals. She's also made 58 appearances for the Mexican national team with 20 goals. Nicknamed La Maga (The Magician), Ovalle went viral on social media this year with a so-called 'scorpion kick' goal, only facing away from the net, in a Tigres match against Guadalajara. Ovalle is set to play in the Liga MX Femenil All-Star game against Barcelona on Friday before joining the Pride. 'This is a historic transfer not only for our institution, but also for Mexican and global soccer," Tigres said in a release announcing the deal. 'The transfer of a player widely recognized as the best in the Liga MX Femenil has been finalized." ___ AP soccer:
