Rupali Ganguly slams Diljit Dosanjh's casting in Border 2 over Hania Aamir row, says 'No room for confused loyalties in a film about national pride.'
The controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh continues to escalate following the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3, which is set to release overseas but not in India. The decision has triggered a strong backlash from sections of the Indian film industry and nationalist groups, who are now urging filmmakers to drop Diljit from the highly anticipated war drama Border 2.
Among the latest voices to weigh in is television star Rupali Ganguly, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her displeasure over the ongoing situation. In a strongly worded post, she wrote, 'Border was a film that evoked deep patriotism among the people of our nation. It's truly disheartening and frustrating to see an actor in #Border2 who fails to recognize his responsibilities towards the country. Kudos to the makers for showing clarity and conviction by dropping that actor from the film. A film that celebrates our soldiers and national pride must reflect that spirit in every aspect. Her reaction comes in the wake of a formal letter by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) addressed to Border 2 producers and lead actor Sunny Deol, calling for Dosanjh's removal. The letter praises Sunny Deol's past contributions to patriotic cinema and expresses concern over his association with Diljit. FWICE wrote, 'We write to you with the deepest respect and admiration for your longstanding service to both the Indian film industry and the nation. Your portrayal of valiant soldiers and national heroes in iconic films like Border, Gadar, and Indian has not only entertained but profoundly inspired generations."
It further read, 'Your commitment as a public representative further stands as a testament to your patriotic values and unwavering dedication to the country. It is in this light that we express our grave concern regarding your association with Mr Diljit Dosanjh in the forthcoming film Border 2."
The letter directly referenced Hania Aamir's past remarks, 'Mr Dosanjh's recent professional choice to cast Pakistani actress Hania Aamir—who has openly posted anti-India content on her social media platforms, especially in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack—has deeply disturbed the sentiments of our industry and the wider national community. Your esteemed presence in a film titled Border 2, which symbolises national pride and sacrifice, alongside someone who has chosen professional ambition over patriotism, sends a conflicting and distressing message to the very public that has always viewed you as a symbol of nationalism."
However, in a contrasting update, a source close to the production of Border 2 told Hindustan Times that there are no plans to replace Diljit Dosanjh, 'There is no plan to replace or remove Diljit from Border 2. His casting was confirmed nearly nine months ago, long before the recent unfortunate incidents. Nearly half the film has already been shot, and any replacement at this stage would be logistically unfeasible."
As the debate rages on, industry insiders speculate whether the production team of Border 2, which includes Bhushan Kumar and Nidhi Dutta, will issue an official statement.
