
Death toll from floods in Nigeria rises to 200

The death toll from devastating floods in a trading town in Niger State in north-central Nigeria has risen to at least 200 people on Sunday, a local official said.
Heavy rains that fell before dawn last Thursday caused devastating floods in Mokwa, about 380 kilometers (240 miles) west of Abuja, a major commercial and transportation hub where farmers in northern Nigeria sell their products and other food to traders from the south.
Mokwa Local Government Deputy Chairman Moses Kimbuko confirmed the updated death toll to The Associated Press on Sunday.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Response Centre to accelerate the provision of aid to the state.

President Sisi Speaks with President of European Council
CAIRO - 3 June 2025: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call from the President of the European Counil, António Costa. The Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said the call emphasized the importance of continuing coordination between Egypt and the European Union on various regional and international issues. President Sisi and Costa discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides and intensify efforts to implement all aspects of the comprehensive strategic partnership, therefore strengthening bilateral relations across the political, economic, cultural, and scientific fields. The call tackled regional developments of mutual interest, mainly the situation in the Gaza Strip. President Sisi reviewed Egypt's continued efforts to reach an agreement to cease fire agreement and exchange prisoners and hostages, stressing the need for concerted international efforts to press for an immediate end to the war and ensure the safe and unhindered entry of humanitarian aid to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip. The call emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state, being the only path to achieving lasting peace in the region. The President and the President of the European Council emphasized the importance of the peace settlement conference and the implementation of the two-state solution, to be held in New York in June, and intensified recognition of the Palestinian state. They also emphasized the rejection of attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause or displace Palestinians from their lands. Mohamed Mandour The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department), in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is convening a regional workshop on internal displacement and its impact on children in the Arab region via an online platform. The workshop is held within the framework of the Joint Action Plan between the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector – Family and Childhood Department) and UNHCR for the period 2024–2025, which seeks to strengthen collaborative efforts to address internal displacement and its multifaceted consequences. The workshop is bringing together representatives from relevant national mechanisms in member states responsible for issues of asylum and displacement, along with experts and specialists in the field of childhood in the Arab region. The agenda includes a range of thematic discussions aimed at deepening understanding of international and regional legal frameworks governing the protection of internally displaced persons, with particular attention to the specific vulnerabilities and needs of displaced children. The programme also explores proposed interventions to improve their humanitarian and legal conditions.
