Toyota slashes FY26 forecast, warns of $9.5 bn hit from US tariffs

Toyota Motor Corp. lowered its annual guidance as it warned of a ¥1.4 trillion ($9.5 billion) hit to its bottomline from US tariffs that have rattled the global automotive industry.
The world's biggest carmaker now sees ¥3.2 trillion in operating income for the fiscal year ending in March 2026, it said Thursday. That's down from its initial forecast of ¥3.8 trillion, and also missed analyst expectations.
The carmaker reported operating income of ¥1.17 trillion in the first quarter, down 11 per cent from a year earlier, though beating analysts' predictions for ¥890 billion. While price hikes in some regions helped that metric, the tariff impact was ¥450 billion for the period.
The outlook, which coincides with the start of President Donald Trump's sweeping new tariffs, marks the carmaker's most comprehensive account of its likely impact beyond a previous estimate that it faced a ¥180 billion hit in April and May alone.
Toyota's estimate dwarfs recent forecasts from global heavyweights as the auto industry contends with fast-changing policies that are seeing costs balloon. Ford Motor Co. said last week that it sees a net tariff impact of $2 billion, about $500 million more than the company expected previously. Meanwhile, Stellantis NV sees tariffs setting back earnings by about €1.5 billion, and General Motors Co. said its exposure is $4 billion to $5 billion.
Toyota's Japanese peers are also facing less of a hit. Subaru Corp. pegs the tariff impact at ¥210 billion, Nissan Motor Co. forecasts ¥300 billion and Honda Motor Co. anticipates ¥450 billion. Toyota's shares fell as much as 2.4 per cent in Tokyo, before paring losses to 1.9 per cent.
Japanese carmakers now face a 15 per cent tariff on vehicles they send to the US after the two countries reached a trade pact last month that also includes plans for Japan to create a $550 billion American investment plan.
While the rate is lower than the additional 25 per cent anticipated by the industry, uncertainties linger over the finer details of its implementation — auto tariff discounts for the EU, Japan and South Korea have yet to be codified and until they do, cars will face the higher charge.
Toyota said in July, in response to the deal, that it hopes for improved ties between the US and Japan, and called for further tariff reductions.
Despite the turmoil, Toyota logged record global sales during the first half of 2025, thanks to strong demand for its gas-electric hybrids in core markets. It sold 5.5 million units between January and June, a 7.4 per cent bump from the previous year, mostly due to robust sales in the US, Japan and China.
The carmaker expects group sales of 11.2 million this year. Toyota also plans to build a new vehicle manufacturing plant in Japan's Aichi, with operations slated to start in the early 2030s and aimed at maintaining domestic production at 3 million vehicles.

The imposition of a 50 per cent US tariff on Indian goods will impact exports of nine product categories, including shrimp, organic chemicals, apparel, and jewellery by 50-70 per cent, think tank GTRI said on Thursday. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising the total duties to 50 per cent on goods coming from India, as a penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. The 50 per cent duty will come into effect from August 27. This is on top of the usual US import duties, called Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariffs. This decision makes India one of the most heavily taxed US trading partners, worse off than China (30 per cent) or Vietnam (20 per cent), and on par with Brazil. GTRI, in its analysis, has categorised India's export segments in three categories- very high impact sectors (exports may be down by 50-70 per cent), high-impact sectors (exports may be down by 30-50 per cent), and low or no impact areas. In the first category, there are nine product categories - shrimp, organic chemicals, carpets, knitted and woven apparel, made-ups, diamonds, gold and jewellery, machinery and mechanical appliances, and furniture and bedding. The high-impact segment goods are steel, aluminium, copper, and auto parts. The last category items are pharmaceuticals, smartphones, and petroleum products, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. India exported $2 billion worth of shrimps to the US in FY2025, accounting for 9.52 per cent of total US shrimp imports. These now face a 50 per cent tariff, an antidumping duty and a countervailing duty of about 10 per cent. "India faces stiff competition from Canada (16.16 per cent share, zero tariff under USMCA) and Chile (15.02 per cent share, 10 per cent tariff). With such high duties, Indian shrimps risk losing significant ground to lower-taxed competitors like Chile," GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said. India exported $2.7 billion of organic chemicals to the US, holding a 5.11 per cent market share, and now faces a 54 per cent total tariff (4 per cent MFN + 50 per cent Trump tariff). In contrast, Ireland (36.11 per cent share) pays just 15 per cent, and Switzerland (6.46 per cent ) pays 39 per cent. "Indian chemical exporters will struggle to stay competitive against these low-tariff suppliers," he said, adding that India is the largest exporter of carpets to the US, with a 35.48 per cent market share and $1.2 billion in export value. He also said that with $10 billion in exports and a 13.63 per cent market share, this is India's top sector to the US, now facing 52.1 per cent duty (2.1 per cent MFN + 50 per cent). Switzerland (17.02 per cent) and Canada (10.44 per cent) pay lower duties -- 39 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively. Further, the country exported $6.7 billion in machinery, with a 6.79 per cent share of US imports. "Now facing a 51.3 per cent duty (1.3 per cent MFN + 50 per cent), India trails behind Mexico (19.92 per cent, zero tariffs), China (16.03 per cent, 30 per cent duty), and Taiwan (10 per cent, 15 per cent levy)," Srivastava said. "Top Indian firms include GE India, Bharat Forge, and JCB India. Tariffs could derail India's climb in advanced manufacturing exports," he noted.

The rupee remained steady on Thursday on likely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the foreign exchange market via dollar sales after the United States slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff on exports of Indian goods yesterday, said dealers. India now faces the highest US tariff of 50 per cent, at par with Brazil. This additional tariff is applicable from 28 August. The local currency settled at 87.71 per dollar, almost flat against the previous close of 87.74 per dollar. 'USDINR needs to close above the 87.95–88.00 per dollar zone to confirm that a fresh up-move is emerging. However, considering the recent moves, it appears that the central bank is committed to preventing the rupee from depreciating further,' said Abhishek Goenka, chief executive officer at IFA Global. US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing India's ongoing imports of Russian oil. The move effectively raises the total duty on select Indian exports to 50 per cent. 'The economic impacts of the tariffs are a concern, with potential downward revisions to India's GDP growth forecast due to the heightened trade tensions. Thus, the Indian rupee today is under pressure but remains steadied by central bank intervention and sectoral dynamics in the Indian economy,' said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury, Finrex Treasury Advisors. The US accounted for around 4 per cent of India's crude oil imports (in volume terms) in FY25, increasing from around 1 per cent in FY24, while Russian imports constitute around a third of Indian oil imports, according to a report by Goldman Sachs. 'The RBI intervened, while foreign investors were on the selling side,' said a dealer at a state-owned bank. 'They are intervening in the non-deliverable forwards (NDF) market too, otherwise the rupee would have fallen below 88 per dollar in the previous week,' he added. The rupee has depreciated by 2.55 per cent in the current financial year, whereas it has witnessed 2.39 per cent depreciation in the current calendar year. Meanwhile, the RBI conducted another overnight variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auction as the surplus liquidity in the banking system continues to hover around ₹4 trillion. On Wednesday, the net liquidity in the banking system was in a surplus of ₹3.90 trillion, according to the latest data from the RBI. The central bank received bids worth ₹49,055 crore at the auction against the notified amount of ₹50,000 crore. The RBI accepted the bidding amount at a cut-off rate of 5.49 per cent. Consequently, the weighted average call rate (WACR), the operating target of monetary policy, settled at 5.43 per cent on Thursday, against the previous close of 5.33 per cent. The RBI's VRRR operations are aimed at absorbing surplus liquidity from the system and anchoring short-term rates closer to the policy repo rate.
