Now playing in movie theaters: 73 minutes of cat videos, for a good cause

Independent4 days ago
The best of the internet's cat videos are coming to the big screen this weekend. Cat Video Fest is a 73-minute, G-rated selection of all things feline —silly, cuddly, sentimental and comedic—that's playing in more than 500 independent theaters in the U.S. and Canada.
A portion of ticket proceeds benefit cat-focused charities, shelters and animal welfare organization. Since 2019, it's raised over $1 million.
The videos are curated by Will Braden, the Seattle-based creator of the comedically existential shorts, Henri, le Chat Noir. His business cards read: 'I watch cat videos.' And it's not a joke or an exaggeration. Braden watches thousands of hours of internet videos to make the annual compilation.
'I want to show how broad the idea of a cat video can be so there's animated things, music videos, little mini documentaries,' Braden said. 'It isn't all just, what I call, 'America's Funniest Home Cat Videos.' It's not all cats falling into a bathtub. That would get exhausting.'
Now in its eighth year, Cat Video Fest is bigger than ever, with a global presence that's already extended to the UK and Denmark, and, for the first time, to France, Spain, Japan and Brazil. Last year, the screenings made over $1 million at the box office.
In the early days, it was a bit of a process trying to convince independent movie theaters to program Cat Video Fest. But Braden, and indie distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories, have found that one year is all it takes to get past that hurdle.
'Everywhere that does it wants to do it again,' Braden said.
Current theatrical partners include Alamo Drafthouse, IFC Center, Nitehawk, Vidiots, Laemmle and Music Box. The screenings attract all variety of audiences, from kids and cat ladies to hipsters and grandparents and everyone in between.
'It's one of the only things, maybe besides a Pixar movie or Taylor Swift concert, that just appeals to everybody,' Braden said.
And the plan is to keep going.
'We're not going to run out of cat videos and we're not going to run out of people who want to see it,' Braden said. 'All I have to do is make sure that it's really funny and entertaining every year.'

Disney princess REFUSES to take picture with theme park guest for shocking reason

A former Disney princess has revealed the shocking moment she refused to take a picture with a theme park guest after he proudly showed off a highly-sexualized tattoo of her character. Katrina, who portrayed Princess Rapunzel during her Disney College Program, took to TikTok to detail the unsettling encounter inside the Town Square Theater. She explained that the male adult guest approached her during a quiet period. 'I was 19 years old,' the content creator began. 'A man came in during our fireworks set... he was the only guest in the room. So it's just this man, the princesses, the photographers and the attendant.' Katrina said the man approached her and asked to show her a tattoo - but, at first, she thought nothing of it. 'A lot of people get Disney tattoos and they want to show you. Totally fine,' she shared. But what he then revealed was anything but innocent. 'He shows me the tattoo on his arm… and it is a risqué - to say the least - photo of Rapunzel,' she said. 'With only her hair covering her bits. And some suggestive adult things going on.' But the Disney princess quickly realized that it was not just the one wild design he had inked on his body. 'This guy's whole body is covered in tattoos like that of the princesses,' she detailed. Next, he asked her for a hug, to which Katrina declined. 'And then he said, "Well, can we take a picture?" And I said, "No. No. None of us are gonna take a picture with you,"' she shared. It was at this point that she broke character and explained the situation to the character attendant. 'I'm like, "You need to get a manager. This guy needs to cover up. None of us need to see photos like that of our character. Or give him a hug. Or don't need the character taking a picture next to that kind of a tattoo,"' Katrina detailed. She described how she felt in the moment: 'Red flag, red flag, sirens going off.' Eventually, a manager at Disney came in to intervene - offering the guest a voucher for clothes to cover up his body art. But he became increasingly disgruntled. 'He was not understanding why we were not so psyched to see him or falling all over him,' Katrina shared. 'I don't know what he thought would happen. I genuinely do not.' Dozens of people in the comments were just as horrified by Katrina's encounter. 'Immediately no. He knew what he was doing, going to the meet and greet when no one else would be there…' a user wrote. 'And in Disneyland, surrounded by children,' someone simply stated. 'Love that there are these rules. Happy he was told the issue. Hate how someone like him didn't see an issue,' another shared. 'Who even agreed to tattoo those, too?! Unbelievable,' a user questioned. 'I would be uncomfortable too, you are correct,' a person affirmed.

Who is Mitch Lane? The budget food guru helping families beat the cost of living

TIKTOK is the place to be if you are a foodie, with creators everywhere teaching doom scrollers how to cook. But while many of them are former award-winning, Michelin -trained, multi-hyphenated chefs, one self-taught home cook has garnered a major following. 4 Who is Mitch Lane? Mitch Lane is not like your average food TikToker. The dad of three is from Wolverhampton and has been posting his food-based content on social media since 2020. He is 32 years old and was previously a tool salesman in Walsall. His first post on his TikTok account was a mouthwatering Kinder Bueno, and from there, his platform grew. His first viral video came after he reconnected the famous McDonald's Big Mac from scratch, receiving over a million views on that alone. Since then, the proud Wolves Football Club fan has amassed over 1.2million loyal followers who stayed tuned to see his latest creation. His ethos is about helping people save, without scrimping on taste, and so Mitch has been praised for his honest and empathetic addressing of the current cost-of-living crisis. What are his books? Mitch has made it his mission to show busy parents how to cook on a budget, and he brought his TikToks to written form after releasing two cookbooks. 4 The self-taught chef authored his debut book, Feed Your Family For A Fiver, which was released in 2023. This book is packed full of easy, comforting, crowd-pleasing recipes that anyone can make on a budget, no matter your experience. From Tandoori Chicken Traybake to Budget Carbonara, Mitch makes life easy for his readers. The book received great acclaim, becoming a Sunday Times Bestseller. And so, he produced a follow-up in 2024, Feed Your Family For A Fiver – In Under 30 Minutes! 4 Mitch spoke to the Sun previously about his motivations for his books. He said: 'I want all you busy, budget-conscious folk to enjoy tasty, comforting meals without breaking the bank. 'And with planning, you can make all these recipes within half an hour. 'Cheap and quick, it's what we need.' What is Mitch Lane doing now? Mitch attributes his success to Lockdown, as after being stuck indoors for months on end, he decided to start creating content. While he is an social media sensation, Mitch's life has not changed drastically. 4 By day, he is still working as a hardware supplier, selling nuts and bolts, the same job he has had since I left school at 17. But he has still managed to meet his idols, as he was invited to appear at BBC Good Food Show in 2023 alongside The Hairy Bikers and Ainsley Harriott. He told The i Paper: "For my friends and family at home, I think it is both weird and exciting to see me achieving this success. "You don't tend to see people from Wolverhampton on the telly, so when one of us is on there, we really cheer each other on."
