Time of India01-05-2025

New Delhi: An Asiatic male lion cub, born to lioness named Mahagauri, died at the Delhi zoo on Thursday, marking the second death of the four lion cubs born at the zoo on Sunday. Officials said the underweight and weak cub was found to have not been taking the feed well. The first cub, born underdeveloped, died on Tuesday.
Sanjeet Kumar, director of the National Zoological Park, said, "As per CCTV observation, one of the cubs was taking mother's milk less frequently than the other cub on Wednesday. It had very little or no milk and seemed very weak and dull at night. It was decided on Thursday to intervene and bring it to the hospital for proper care and hand-rearing. The cub was found underweight, about 700 grams, and very weak."

Zoo officials said supportive therapy and kitten replacement milk formula, along with all necessary therapy, were given to the cub. "It died around 3 pm despite the best efforts by the vet team," said Kumar.
The other two cubs are said to be active. "The first cub is with the mother and is taking the mother's feed regularly. The second cub, which is being hand-reared for two days, is also responding to the feed formula and is active. In the last two days, this cub gained around 150 grams in weight, and all vitals are normal," said Kumar. He added that continuous monitoring of both cubs is being done by the animal keeper and veterinary team.
On Sunday, Delhi zoo saw the birth of four cubs to the 5-year-old lioness Mahagauri and 5-year-old lion Maheshwar. It was the first successful breeding of the species at the zoo since 2009. Both Mahagauri and Maheshwar came to Delhi Zoo from Gujarat's Junagadh in 2021 when they were only cubs, 1.5 years old.

Karnataka reports 1.2k Covid cases since Jan

Bengaluru: Karnataka reported 1,220 Covid-19 cases since Jan 1, with 559 active cases, 652 recoveries, and 9 deaths recorded. The rise comes amid a fresh nationwide uptick in infections, with the current rate of positivity in the state at 40.7% – out of 650 tests conducted Monday, 265 found positive. However, health experts maintain that the current situation does not warrant panic, though precautions remain necessary. Out of 559 active cases, 552 people are under home isolation. According to Dr Sunil Kumar, epidemiologist and secretary of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine, the recent cases in Karnataka and other parts of the country are largely due to sublineages of the Omicron variant—specifically JN.1, LF.7, and NF.1.8.1. "These are not new variants, but descendants of Omicron. They are more transmissible, which explains the steady rise in the numbers," he said. Despite the increase in cases, the severity remains low. Dr Kumar noted, "Over 95% of patients are recovering at home, with only 3-4% requiring hospitalisation. Very few of those hospitalised need oxygen support. Another factor contributing to the rise is the expansion of testing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo The state resumed screening for ILI (influenza-like illness) and Sari (severe acute respiratory infection), which naturally results in more detected cases. Covid moved into an endemic phase. Unlike earlier pandemic waves, such periodic surges are expected once or twice a year." Dr Vinay Hosadurga, a general physician at Vasavi Hospitals, pointed out a shift in symptoms with the current variant. "Earlier, many patients reported loss of smell and taste. That's no longer common. What we are seeing now in some cases is diarrhoea," he said. He added, "The monsoon season could further complicate diagnosis due to a simultaneous rise in flu cases. Since both flu and Covid-19 present similar symptoms such as fever and fatigue, patients are advised to avoid self-medication and consult a doctor. There is no cause for alarm, as most cases are mild. But it's still important to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and seek medical advice if symptoms arise."

Mandya gears up for mega yoga day celebration on June 21

In preparation for the 11th International Yoga Day, Mandya district is set to host a large-scale yoga session at PET Grounds on June 21. Over 6,000 people are expected to take part in the event. Chairing a preparatory meeting here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Kumar said that meticulous planning is required to ensure the event is conducted in a systematic, disciplined, and inclusive manner. He spoke about yoga's holistic benefits, stating that it not only enhances physical health but also improves concentration, particularly among students. This year's event will be held under the global theme 'One Earth, One Health'. In line with this, two new initiatives, Green Yoga and Yoga Dhanush, will be introduced. As part of Green Yoga, saplings will be planted, in collaboration with the Forest Department, promoting environmental consciousness and personal wellness. To ensure wider reach and participation, a yoga module has been developed via the 'Y-Break Yoga App', especially for prison inmates, persons with disabilities, industrial workers, and employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. A special yoga session is also planned for garment workers in the Maddur industrial area. The main session at PET Grounds will be held from 7 a.m. to 7.45 a.m., with participants required to arrive by 6 a.m. Dr. Kumar said that five yoga instructors should be appointed to oversee the event. These instructors will conduct training for the participants for about two days. The Police Department will make security arrangements, while the Health Department will provide ambulance services, first aid, and organise a blood donation camp. Pushpa, District AYUSH Officer; Rajamurthy, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development; Meera Shivalingayya, president of the District Red Cross Society; S.H. Nirmala, Assistant Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, and others were present.

Bihar tops the nation in digital healthcare, with over 90 per cent health facilities almost paperless

Patna, June 8 (UNI) With 92 per cent of health facilities almost going paperless, Bihar has emerged as the national frontrunner in digital transformation in healthcare, achieving the number one rank in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) implementation. The state is setting new benchmarks in accessible and efficient public health delivery, with a remarkable 92 per cent online OPD registration rate at government health facilities and the highest number of QR code scans for patient check-ins CEO of Bihar Swasthya Suraksha Samiti, Shashank Shekhar Sinha, highlighted the state's achievements and said that the state not only leads in QR code scans for OPD registration but also tops the country in the number of Electronic Health Records (e-prescriptions) generated. He further noted that Bihar has received the highest incentives under the Central Government's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS), which are being reinvested to strengthen the state's digital health infrastructure. State Health Committee Administrative Officer Rajesh Kumar said that the state's BHAVYA (Bihar Health Applications Visionary Yojana for All) model, aligned with ABDM, has redefined healthcare accessibility and monitoring across the state. According to Kumar, paperless health facilities under digital healthcare were possible following the 'Scan and Share' initiative under ABDM, which allows patients to scan a QR code at the entry of a health facility and directly proceed to a consultation without the hassle of long queues or paperwork. This simple yet revolutionary step, along with widespread adoption of ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), has dramatically reduced patient turnaround time in government hospitals, from over an hour earlier to an average of just 45 minutes now, covering consultation to medicine disbursal. Kumar further said that Bihar's state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre, a technological nerve centre in the state capital, monitors real-time feeds from all district hospitals and health facilities across the state. It ensures prompt alerts, compliance monitoring, and smooth operations at all levels. This setup is further backed by District Command Centres and Data Analytics Units, allowing proactive identification and management of potential health emergencies by tracking disease trends and patient data in real time. Meanwhile, a nine-member delegation recently visited Bihar on a three-day tour of the state to understand the scale and impact of this digital leap. During interaction with patients at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Silao in Nalanda district, the patients lauded the convenience and efficiency of the new digital process, describing it as a complete overhaul of the previous cumbersome system.
