Maulana Azad dental science institute installs AI scanner to reduce wait time
New Delhi: Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) has installed ScanOair, an AI-powered scanner capable of detecting common dental issues such as tooth decay, gum inflammation and teeth misalignment to improve diagnostic efficiency and reduce patient waiting time. The device, which uses artificial intelligence to provide a provisional diagnosis within minutes, is being positioned as a patient-friendly innovation, especially beneficial in a high-volume setting like MAIDS. Final diagnosis and treatment planning, however, will continue to be handled by dental specialists following clinical evaluation, institute officials said. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Speaking to TOI, Dr Gyanendra Kumar, professor and head of the department of comprehensive dentistry at MAIDS, said three ScanOair units have been installed on the ground floor near the registration counter and will be inaugurated on Wednesday by Delhi health minister Pankaj Kumar Singh. Each scanner costs approximately Rs 3 lakh. "The scanner is user-friendly and fully automated," Dr Kumar said. "Once the patient registers, they can select a preferred language, enter their name and WhatsApp number, and follow guided instructions. The machine adjusts its camera height, captures images from three angles — front, upper and lower — and generates a detailed AI-based report within five minutes." The scanner employs a three-layer AI system, detecting the mouth, jaw and appropriate camera angles. It also tilts to scan the roof of the mouth and identifies specific dental anomalies such as cavities, gum swelling, bleeding and even records body temperature. Patients receive a full PDF report on their WhatsApp, enabling them to consult doctors directly with the preliminary findings in hand. "With such a large OPD load, this system significantly reduces the time spent on routine oral examinations," Dr Kumar said, adding that assistants will be available to guide patients as needed. "Those who want to wait for a manual exam can still do so, but others can speed up the process with the scanner." Dr Arundeep Kaur, director principal of MAIDS, said the integration of ScanOair — supported by IDBI Bank under its CSR initiative — is a transformative step in streamlining care delivery. "It not only improves safety and efficiency in a post-COVID environment but also marks a major technological leap for govt dental institutions," she said.

Beer sales dip over 18% in first half of 2025
Bengaluru: Beer sales in Karnataka have taken a hit in the first six months of 2025, with overall sales dropping by more than 18% compared to the same period last year, even as revenue increased marginally by 0.6%. According to the excise department, only 209.9 lakh carton boxes were sold between Jan and June this year, down from 257 lakh cartons in the first half of 2024. The decline was steepest in Jan with sales falling by 30.6%. Even during April and May — months that usually see a surge in beer consumption due to peak summer — sales dipped by over 16% and 26% respectively. Feb saw a marginal 5.5% drop, while March and June recorded double-digit falls of 15.4% and 13.8%, suggesting the decline is not merely seasonal. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Industry insiders say the sustained slump is largely due to repeated hikes in additional excise duty (AED) and increasing retail prices. In the past two years, the govt has revised taxes and licence fees on beer and low-end Indian-made liquor (IML) four times, pushing both manufacturers and sellers into a corner. A pub chain owner from Church Street said the numbers reflect the cumulative impact of policy changes. "The main culprit is the constant uncertainty that leaves owners in losses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Even with more spending on advertising, footfall hasn't improved. We can't hike food prices either — customers simply won't come." The sentiment is echoed by a liquor shop owner from Shivamogga, who has been in the trade for two decades. "People who once bought four bottles now settle for one. I used to sell nearly 10 cartons a day, now it's down to seven. To recover, we've had to raise prices on food and other items, but business is still in losses," he said. In response to the industry's concerns, the govt recently altered the AED (additional excise duty) structure. Venkatesh Kumar R, commissioner, excise department, told TOI that the earlier system of 195% duty plus an additional Rs 130 per bulk litre had been revised. "It's now a flat 200% AED across all segments. Manufacturers told us the Rs 130 slab was pushing up prices for low-cost beer by Rs 15–20, hurting volumes. The change was made based on those inputs," Kumar added. However, the revised duty structure has been in place for only a month, and officials admit that a full recovery will take time. Kumar noted this year's early onset of monsoon meant a weak summer, another factor that pulled down beer demand. "April to July is usually peak season, especially in Bengaluru, but that didn't materialise. Sales have been subdued across the state," he said.

Lapses in registrations at tehsils lead to Rs 5,000 crore tax evasion a year in Haryana
Gurgaon: The income tax (I-T) department has estimated tax evasion amounting to over Rs 5,000 crore each year after it has discovered that permanent account numbers (PAN) of buyers and sellers are not being entered into the software during registrations at the tehsil offices of the state. In 93 tehsils across 22 districts, PAN is not being fed into the software during registrations. According to norms, details of all registries for properties that cost over Rs 30 lakh have to be shared with the I-T department. The tehsil office has to provide the names, PAN and Aadhaar card details of the buyers and sellers. "Even if 1% of people evade taxes, the amount would be at least Rs 5,000 crore in a year," an I-T official told TOI, adding, "Instructions have been given to the concerned officials regarding this issue. With the help of property transactions, I-T officials trace the tax evaders. The mismatch in IT returns and high-value property transactions could lead to a person evading tax. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said a meeting with revenue department officials has been held to ensure all tehsildars meet the standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Thought I'd Tried Everything for Back Pain – Until This NeuroMD® Learn More Undo "If there is a software flaw, it will be addressed at the headquarters level," Kumar said. A month ago, an I-T department team conducted a raid in Wazirabad, the state's largest tehsil. Upon examining the seized records, it was found that 27,000 registrations took place in a year, with the total value of these registrations surpassing Rs 30,000 crore. Following the raid, the work of feeding PAN into the software is underway. The records sent from the tehsil to the I-T department are being carefully examined. To prevent evasion of tax, the I-T department has asked the tehsil offices across the state to collect the specified financial transaction (SSFT) statement from parties involved in property transactions exceeding Rs 30 lakh during document registration. Submitting SSFT to the I-T department is obligatory under Section 285BA(1) of the Income Tax Act-1961.
