Historic County Durham house with ties to Queen Victoria on market for £1 million

Yahoo2 days ago
Dating from the early 19th century and with ties to Queen Victoria, a historic County Durham house has hit the property market.
The Old Vicarage in High Etherley, near Bishop Auckland, is a Grade II-listed residence, and is on the market for offers over £1 million.
The property is architecturally significant and historically rich, having once housed the village's first reverend, George Watson.
With the support of Queen Victoria herself, who purchased 33 copies of a fundraising sermon collection written by the reverend, the house underwent early improvements and expansion.
The property is also noted to have historic links to Lord Armstrong of Cragside.
Set in beautifully landscaped four-acre grounds, the detached former rectory is Tudor in style and constructed from coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings under a Welsh slate roof.
(Image: A&G LAND AND PROPERTY AGENTS) It is set in a quiet part of High Etherley and is surrounded by themed gardens, formal lawns, gazebos, summer houses and peaceful seating areas.
The residence offers six bedrooms, a series of well-appointed reception rooms, a stunning orangery, and a spacious bespoke kitchen with high-quality integrated appliances and an open glass atrium ceiling.
There are an abundance of period features throughout, including working sash windows with shutters, ornate fireplaces, wood panelling and stained glass.
The property also features a modern steam and shower room, multiple cellars and a number of outbuildings including a substantial detached garage with workshop, kitchenette, WC and shower room.
The magnificent grounds are a highlight in their own right. A wrought iron moon-gate leads through to an Italianate garden complete with cascading waterfalls, statues and fountains.

The village of High Etherley offers excellent access to nearby Bishop Auckland and the surrounding countryside, while Durham, Darlington and the A1(M) are all within easy reach.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the North East's most impressive period homes. The Old Vicarage has been extensively renovated and thoughtfully extended, presenting in excellent condition throughout, and offers enormous versatility for residential or commercial use.

Councillor undertakes special Lakeland Rowing Club boat naming ceremony

A ROWING club's two new boats have been christened in a special naming ceremony. Cumberland councillor Sally Lansbury attended the naming ceremony for two newly acquired boats at the Lakeland Rowing Club's picturesque premises on Derwentwater Isthmus, Keswick. The event marks a significant milestone for the club, made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), administered by Cumberland Council. The new boats—a four-seater quad and a two-seater double—will be officially named 'Tyan' and 'Methera'. The names were voted on by club members and reflects the club's Cumbrian roots and connection to the local community. Cllr Lansbury christened the boats, a ceremony that welcomes a boat to the water and is intended to bring good luck and safe travels. Sally said: 'Lakeland Rowing Club is a great example of what enthusiasm, ingenuity, hard work and determination can achieve. "With just a few shipping containers to work from and based on the Isthmus, members past and present have created a thriving club to provide rowing opportunities for Keswick's community. "I congratulate the current committee and fundraising team for their successful purchase of these two new vessels. "The club is providing wonderful opportunities for local people.' New training centre for young people nearing completion

A new training facility for young people in Felixstowe is nearing completion, but a funding shortfall is holding back the final push. The building, part of Felixstowe Sea Cadets' Project Avenir, will soon become the new home of TS Landguard. It aims to provide 10 to 18-year-olds with training in seamanship, leadership, boating, first aid and other skills. While construction is almost finished, the group says more funds are needed to equip the centre. Vivian Fox, commanding officer of Felixstowe Sea Cadets, said: "We're incredibly proud of how far we've come, but we need help to finish the journey. "By sponsoring a room, a boat, or even a single piece of equipment, supporters will be helping to build a better future for young people in our community." The group has outlined a range of sponsorship options, including naming classrooms, funding safety gear and supporting annual scholarships for cadets. The training facility is set to open later this year (Image: Felixstowe Sea Cadets) Sponsors will be acknowledged at the unit and online, and will be invited to the official opening later this year. Petty officer Fox said: "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. "Our new unit will give young people from all backgrounds a place to learn, grow, and thrive. "We're asking the community to help us bring it fully to life." TS Landguard is part of Felixstowe Sea Cadets, a volunteer-led youth group within the national Sea Cadets charity. The organisation offers maritime-themed activities to help young people gain confidence, practical skills and a strong sense of service and teamwork.
