KZN cop who won a car thought he was being summoned for disciplinary hearing
Mhlongo was not invited to the awards, held at the Durban ICC on Friday night. Instead, he was summoned to provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's office to sign a letter of warning for misconduct he knew nothing about.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said Mhlongo's anxiety changed to tears of joy when the supposed charge of misconduct turned out to be a brand new vehicle.
'Sgt Mhlongo never submitted any application for an excellence award, however, his brilliant performance in investigating and securing notable convictions, with over 184 years' imprisonment sentences for cases of murder, house robberies and other violent crimes in one year, earned him recognition,' he said.
Mhlongo was given the nod by all 11 district commissioners, three deputy provincial commissioners and the provincial commissioner himself.

Two held for kidnapping of Kariega woman
Two suspects have been arrested for the recent kidnapping of a 73-year-old Kariega woman . Theresa Minnie was abducted outside her Fairbridge Heights home at 5.30am on Monday last week. She was released unharmed by the kidnappers at the weekend. Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said the suspects, aged 29 and 31, had been positively linked to Minnie's kidnapping. The suspects were due appear at the Kariega magistrate's court on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, Mhlakuvana said. He said the arrests were a collaborative effort between the Gqeberha-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and Magama security company. Mhlakuvana said Minnie had been driving out the gate at her home when she was blocked by a Volkswagen Polo and two armed people got out the vehicle. They bundled her into their vehicle and sped off. Mhlakuvana said on the same day a ransom demand had allegedly been made and the matter was handed over to the Hawks for investigation. He said the pressure exerted by a multidisciplinary team had resulted in her being released on Saturday and she was found near the Kariega police station unharmed and reunited with her family. 'An intelligence-driven operation was conducted, which led the team to the suspects' homestead,' Mhlakuvana said. He said they had recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, two vehicles and two firearms that were suspected to have been used in Minnie's kidnapping. These had been seized for further investigation. Metro cop charged with wife's death abandons bail application
eThekwini metro police officer Qiniso Sishi, 41, who is charged with the murder of his wife Thandokuhle Mkhize, 48, has abandoned applying for bail. Sishi's attorney Musawenkosi Mkhize told Durban magistrate Sicelo Zuma he had received instructions from his client. 'He advised me to abandon bail so investigations can go ahead,' said Sishi. Mkhize, a lawyer, was stabbed many times in the early hours on July 28 at their home in Woodlands, south of Durban. Senior prosecutor Calvin Govender, who was opposed to bail, asked the court to grant an adjournment for further investigation. He said they would seek advice from the directorate of public prosecutions as this was a potential high court matter. The public gallery was packed with family, friends, community members and MK Party supporters. Outside court, Mkhize's sister Khumbuzile Mkhize said the family was satisfied with proceedings. 'We are happy because he does not deserve bail. He deserves to be locked up. We have sent my niece Aphiwe Mkhize back to school. We are not coping as a family,' said a tearful Mkhize. She said Sishi's release on bail could have posed a risk to himself and others. During his court appearance last week, Mkhize's daughter shouted at Sishi as he was leaving the dock ' sengathi ungafela phakathi ' (may you rot in jail). DRC army battles convicted war criminal Lubanga's CPR militia
Heavy clashes erupted this week between the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) army and a militia founded by a war criminal convicted at the International Criminal Court (ICC) but later released, both sides said, and one civil society activist put the civilian death toll at 19. Thomas Lubanga, an Ituri native, told Reuters in March that he was forming the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CPR) to topple the regional government, creating another potential security threat in war-scarred eastern DRC where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have also seized significant territory. At the time, the group had not launched military operations, he said. This week, however, DRC's army said the CPR had attempted multiple attacks and that soldiers had killed 12 of the group's fighters in two different locations around 30km north of Bunia, the Ituri capital. A CPR commander, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to brief the media, said there were clashes but acknowledged the death of just "one of my men".
