Man who pretended to be Asda manager and walked out with £40k still at large

The man, who was dressed in a smart black suit, walked into the Asda supermarket in Manchester and posed as the manager of the Bureau de Change in a well-planned heist
A man who pretended to be an Asda manager and walked out with a £40,000 loot remains at large to this day.
The conman, who has never been identified, carried out the unlikely heist by walking behind the counter of the Bureau de Change at the Asda supermarket in Trafford Park, Manchester and posing as a senior member of staff. Dressed in a smart grey suit, he spoke to staff and served customers as they approached the desk, dealing with their requests and handing out cash and traveller's cheques. Then, after biding his time, he used a crucial piece of inside information to strike - and made off with tens of thousands of pounds.

The crime unfolded almost a decade ago on July 29 2015, but remained under wraps until Manchester Evening News received a tip-off and broke the story on August 5 that year.
Police then released astonishing CCTV footage of the man convincingly playing the role of the manager.
In the years since the scenes have been compared to the Hollywood blockbuster 'Catch Me If You Can', where Leonardo DiCaprio plays real life con artist Frank Abagnale Jr - a man who made millions posing as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer.

Making off with a smaller but certainly not insignificant amount of money, the brazen nature of the Asda conman's scheme still shocks to this day - with CCTV footage revealing how exactly he went about committing the crime.
The man is shown in the footage calmly walking into the kiosk clutching a plastic bag and a tablet device, along with a set of white earphones.

In one part of the minute-long clip, he is seen chatting to a customer who approaches for help, and in another he plays with a mobile phone he holds under the Bureau de Change kiosk. He is also shown fiddling around with drawers under the counter.
Explaining how he managed to gain access to the kiosk, a source told the MEN: 'As the woman in the Bureau de Change was leaving he slipped into the kiosk. He started to serve customers, just giving them wedges of cash, as he clearly had no idea about exchange rates. He apparently wore a glove, knew the code for the safe, punched it in, and was able to empty it.

'At one point a senior member of the Asda staff walked passed while he was in the kiosk and even spoke to him but he just kept up the pretence - as cool as you like.
"Some of the customers got an early Christmas bonus too - getting much more than they should have done. Apparently the code to the bureau safe had not been changed for ages. He must have been in a few times and done his homework.'
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) offered a £2,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions, but no arrests were ever made.

The conman was described as Asian, aged in his mid 20s or early 30s and slim. In one section of the footage, he is seen wearing a single black glove. He sported a suspiciously full head of hair, later suspected to be a wig, along with a likely fake beard.
GMP's Det Con Simon Johnson said the man had never worked in the store. Appealing for information at the time, he said: 'I would ask people to take time to look at the CCTV footage and bear in mind that the offender may be using some form of disguise to obscure his appearance. The company who owns the kiosk have put forward a reward of £2,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for this crime.'
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: 'At 3.45pm on Wednesday, July 29th, (2015) police were called following reports a large amount of money had been stolen by a man from a currency kiosk based at Trafford Park."
GMP told local media this week that the mystery man had never been arrested, and all intelligence on the case dried up in 2015.

Shopping centre statement after viral video of girl causing 'mayhem' stuns onlookers

A series of videos have gone viral on social media at the weekend showing a young girl causing 'chaos' at Manchester Arndale and now the shopping centre has issued a statement A major UK shopping centre has issued a statement after wild videos went viral on social media allegedly showing a young girl causing 'mayhem'. ‌ In the various clips, a young girl is spotted clambering on top of an escalator, being ushered away by security guards, and reportedly yanking another shopper's hair whilst inside Manchester's Arndale Shopping Centre. ‌ One video capturing the incident has been viewed by more than 55 million people on TikTok within just three days. Another snippet on X has amassed over 13 million views in barely 12 hours, with folks from all corners of the globe sharing their opinions on the footage. It comes after a family of 10 'barged out' of pub in brazen dine and dash after £320 meal. ‌ Some American viewers have drawn comparisons between the girl and children's book character Junie B Jones, as well as The Grinch's Cindy Lou Who. The footage appears to kick off with a young girl in a pink coat and her family having a row with a team of security staff outside a shop, alongside another group of shoppers. It's unclear what is being said, but online speculation suggests that the girl and her family were accused of shoplifting, with security seen separating the two groups of shoppers. ‌ As the clip rolls on, the girl and her family depart, before another young girl hurls an unidentified object towards where the security guards and the other group of shoppers are standing, reports the Manchester Evening News. In a subsequent video, believed to follow the earlier footage, the girl in the pink coat is seen descending an escalator ahead of two security staff. She then hoists herself onto the central partition between the moving staircases and climbs onto the adjacent escalator, which is stationary, proceeding to walk up its steps. ‌ At the top, she confronts a group of onlookers, before being filmed yanking the hair of a female shopper. The girl then returns down the escalator, all the while sporting a grin. The collection of videos has sparked a flurry of reactions, with some labelling the young girl a 'diva' while others condemn her behaviour. One viewer commented: "the pink jacket girl CLIMBING OVER the escalator, going back down it, and then going back up just gag her is frying me like WHO IS THIS DIVA LMFAOOO." ‌ They continued: "this entire situation is so chaotic i'm crying". Another remarked: "That escalator wasn't ready for a diva moment". While some were amused by the footage, there were those who expressed disapproval. A commenter stated: "I don't find her behaviour that funny." Another added: "Parents need to start parenting." There was also criticism towards those glamorising the girl's antics, with one individual questioning: "What an imbecile. Endangering others safety as well as her own. Why we calling her diva again?" ‌ One person said: "Hateee the way everyone's hyping this child up, like that is not a diva stop enabling this behaviour omg." Another voiced their concern: "maybe it's because i actually have kids and I'd die of embarrassment if they were like this, but the response to this girl overall being 'go off queen' is so ****ed." However, while some may think the event is recent, the Manchester Evening News has confirmed that the original videos were first shared on TikTok in March 2022 by @dreams_dreams24. ‌ The same account has recently re-uploaded the videos, causing 'pink coat girl' to become a viral sensation on TikTok once again. Shameless star Kelli Hollis also weighed in on the footage with her 293,000 followers, labelling the youngster a 'little madam'. In her video, Kelli commented: "She ain't a little diva, her. She's going to be a little ****ing nightmare is what she is." She continued: "It's funny because it's just pure cheek but she's a little madam." Manchester Arndale's spokesperson said: "We're aware of a video that has been recently circulated on social media, which shows an altercation that took place in Manchester Arndale and was attended by members of our Security team." They clarified: "Following a review of the footage, we can confirm that this is a historic incident that occurred several years ago."

I stayed in a popular hotel before finding a strange man under my bed, I still suffer from PTSD & won't forget his smell

Plus, the cruel reaction she's had from some men HORROR STAY I stayed in a popular hotel before finding a strange man under my bed, I still suffer from PTSD & won't forget his smell Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANY people love to check into a hotel to unwind - but one woman was left horrified after claiming she discovered a strange man under her bed. Natali Khomenk, who lives in Thailand, shared how she had visited Japan on a solo trip in March as she had thought it was a very safe country. She set off sightseeing the following day, but had the traumatic experience upon her return. In a clip on her @natalisi account, she claimed: 'I came back around 7:30 p.m., unlocked my room like usual, took off my clothes, lay down on the bed, and then I noticed a weird smell. 'At first, I thought it was coming from my hair or the bed sheets, but then I realised it was coming from under the bed. 'Jokingly, I thought, 'What if there's a dead person laying under the bed?' 'But when I leaned over to check, I saw a pair of eyes staring at me. I saw an Asian man under my bed.' Natali said she started to scream and jumped to her feet as the man climbed out from under the bed. He then stared at her for three long seconds, and she added: 'Those seconds felt like my life is over.' Speaking to The Guardian, she described him as 'east Asian, between 20 and 30, slightly overweight, a bowl haircut and black clothes.' She said: 'I began to hyperventilate and froze on the spot, unsure whether he was about to jump on me, choke me or even try to kill me.' Hotel slammed for using endangered red pandas to wake up guests by letting cuddly critters crawl into their beds The man then started the scream and ran out of her room. Natali said she immediately called the hotel administration and the police, and they found a power bank and USB cable under her bed. She kept asking the hotel how the scary situation had happened, but they didn't have any answers for her. Natali continued: 'Even more, they suggested upfront that police won't find the intruder because they had no cameras.' As she was understandably feeling scared and unsafe, she moved to another hotel and demanded a full refund the following day. 3 She claims that the police have been unable to identify the man Credit: TikTok / @natalisi_ However, she claims the hotel didn't contact her or send an email with the incident report. She then reached out to Agoda, who she had booked the hotel through, and they offered her $178 (£133) in coupons, which she felt was 'ridiculous', given she had paid $600 (£450) for three nights. After contacting the hotel directly once more, they finally agreed to refund the payment, but said the police hadn't been able to identify the man. She continued: 'The next days of my trip were a nightmare. I couldn't sleep. I was constantly on edge, checking every corner of my room.' EMOTIONAL COMPENSATION Natali eventually wrote to the hotel demanding 'compensation for emotional damage', and asked for $1,600 (£1,200). However, she claims they declined giving her the money as it 'wasn't in their policy.' Now, she's been left wondering how someone could get into her room and that they knew she was alone there. She added to the Guardian: 'I eventually returned to my home in Thailand struggling with anxiety and PTSD. 'I have found it difficult to stay informed about what's happening with my case, and worry that nothing will come of it. But I haven't given up – I'm exploring options so that it can be properly investigated. "Sadly, though, I've also had men write to me, claiming it's my fault or that I just want to denigrate Japan. 'I used to think I was invincible, and that there was more good in this world than bad. Now I'm not so sure.'
