MELBOURNE (Reuters) -Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from one-day internationals to focus on next year's T20 World Cup, the country's cricket board said on Monday.
Maxwell took the decision to prioritise his preparation for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, and his commitment to franchise leagues, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement.
"I think back to right at the start I was picked ahead of my time and out of the blue. I was just proud just to be playing a couple of games for Australia. I thought I was just going to have that," the two-time World Cup winner said in the statement.
"Since then, I have been able to go through the up and downs of being dropped, being brought back, playing in a few World Cups and being a part of some great teams."
The 36-year-old has played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7 - second only to Andre Russell's 130.22.
Maxwell's 201 not out from 128 balls while battling cramps in a 2023 World Cup match against Afghanistanis considered the greatest knock in this format.
Maxwell, who played the last of his seven tests in 2017, told the Final Word Podcast that the toll of 50-overs cricket, especially after a leg injury he suffered in 2022, affected his fielding ability during the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how (the) body was reacting to the conditions," he said.
"I had a good chat with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward," he told the Final Word Podcast.
"We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'."
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg congratulated Maxwell for "one of the most exciting and influential one day international careers in the format's history".
"Glenn's ballistic batting has lit up the cricket world and been one of the cornerstones of Australia's continued success in the 50 over game, including his heroic role in the 2023 World Cup triumph," Greenberg said.

Home Nations League 'privilege not pressure', say hosts Germany

MUNICH, GERMANY: Hosts Germany insisted that playing the Nations League finals at home was a "privilege", dismissing suggestions of additional pressure ahead of Wednesday's semi-final against Portugal in Munich. The winners at Munich's Allianz Arena will face either holders Spain or France in Sunday's final, also to be held at the same venue. Last year's Euros hosts beat Italy in the quarter-finals, earning the right to stage the remainder of the tournament on home soil as well as securing progression to the final four. Germany's hopes of winning Euro 2024 at home were dashed with a quarter-final defeat in extra time to eventual champions Spain in July last year. Midfielder Leon Goretzka, recalled to the Germany squad after being omitted from Euro 2024 due to form, rejected the idea that his side were under pressure to comfortably dispatch underdogs Portugal. "I don't see it like that," Goretzka said on Tuesday. "I see it as a privilege to play in front of your home fans." Portugal have not beaten Germany since 2000 and have lost their last five matches against them. Of the remaining teams, Germany are the only side yet to win the Nations League, with Portugal, France, and Spain lifting the trophy in 2019, 2021, and 2023 respectively. Describing the tournament as "a mini-Euros", Goretzka said, "It's a chance to give our country a title, even if it's a small one." Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has repeatedly emphasised that the Nations League campaign is a crucial part of their preparation for the 2026 World Cup. "It's a small title, but for us as a group, it's very important," the coach added. Four Portugal players won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain in Munich on Saturday. Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, and João Neves all started the match, while Gonçalo Ramos came off the bench. Nagelsmann said that facing Portugal's PSG stars so soon "had advantages and disadvantages." "Recently they've had a bit more to do than other players," said Nagelsmann, adding, "the game wasn't that long ago." "They might have celebrated a bit, too. I don't know how well they're doing now, but they probably had a beer or two." Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes toasted his team-mates' success but said, "Regardless of how many beers they've had, they're amazing players, ambitious players – and more motivated than ever. "I'm sure they're more than ready." Portugal coach Roberto Martínez said the energy of Portugal's PSG contingent was "contagious", calling them "winners." Even if the quartet had celebrated hard, Martínez said, "For Portugal, it's better to have players who have that experience of winning." "I'll wait until tomorrow to see how they are physically, but emotionally they are over the moon." Fernandes said the absence of the injured Jamal Musiala gave Portugal a boost, calling the Germany midfielder "if not the best, then one of the best number 10s in the world." "He's very talented and has so much to offer football – we're lucky he's not playing."

Spain target 'enormously important' Nations League defence

BARCELONA: Spain are aiming to become the first team to defend the Nations League trophy, with Luis de la Fuente's side going from strength to strength on the international stage ahead of next year's World Cup. The coach often reflects on La Roja's triumph at the 2023 tournament, which was an early indicator that a young Spanish side were on their way back to the top. It proved the springboard to Euro 2024 glory, and De la Fuente now wants to continue Spain's resurgence by retaining the title this summer in Germany. It would bode well for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer, where Spain will be among the favourites. They face France in the Nations League semi-finals in Stuttgart before a potential final against either Germany or Portugal. "We attach enormous importance to it – it's almost more difficult than a European Championship, and we want to be the first team to win it twice," De la Fuente told reporters last week. "We want to continue competing at the highest level with these teams." After European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, sandwiching their 2010 World Cup triumph in South Africa, the Spanish national team experienced a slump. Poor performances at the Russia and Qatar World Cups began to fade from memory, however, as De la Fuente's side beat Italy and Croatia to win the Nations League. The success also helped him personally, with many doubting his credentials and blaming him for an embarrassing defeat by Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. The Scots beat De la Fuente's Spain in March 2023 – their last competitive defeat, 23 matches ago. Spain beat Italy, Germany, and France en route to the Euro 2024 final, where they overcame England to claim their first major trophy in 12 years. The worrying sign for the rest of the world is that De la Fuente's Spanish side remain hungry, with many players yet to reach their peak. The team is led by Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 on the eve of the Euro final, while on the opposite flank, Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams, 22, also has his best years ahead of him. Barcelona's midfield maestro Pedri, also 22, pulls the strings, while there are emerging talents in other areas – including Porto striker Samu Aghehowa and new Real Madrid signing Dean Huijsen. Despite his focus on younger players, De la Fuente has shown he is not inflexible, turning to Real Betis midfielder Isco. After a superb season in which the former Real Madrid playmaker helped the Andalusians reach the Conference League final, the 33-year-old finally received the call-up he longed for. Some had said De la Fuente should have given Isco a chance last summer, but the coach was vindicated as his team went on to win the Euros. "He's going to add a lot – if we had any doubts, he wouldn't be here," said De la Fuente. "He could have been at the Euros, or not, but those who had to be there, were there." Isco's presence gives Spain even more depth in a midfield packed with quality – and still missing Manchester City's Rodri Hernández, who has yet to return to action after missing most of the season through injury. "In Spain, we are privileged to have many very good footballers," De la Fuente said during the Euros. "I think they are the best players in the world for many reasons." In almost every position, the coach is blessed with multiple strong options, with the team arguably only lacking one elite striker – although that has not held them back. Aghehowa, 21, could grow into that player, though De la Fuente continues to consider all his options – including veteran Álvaro Morata, Dani Olmo as a false nine, or Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winner against England. "This is a team, and in that team, everyone contributes their bit to make a stronger, more solid group," said De la Fuente. "Samu is fantastic, Álvaro, Mikel, Dani... we can play in many ways with different players – and that is exactly what our strength is."

Ecstatic Kohli revels in first IPL title, albeit below Test highs

VIRAT Kohli said on Tuesday he had given his 'youth and prime' to land one of the best moments of his career as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured him a first-ever Indian Premier League T20 title at the 18th time of asking. The 36-year-old Kohli, however, confessed that the six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, sweet as it was, ranked 'five levels below Test cricket'. The former India captain, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, top-scored with 43 as Bengaluru posted 190-9 in the final. It was not his most fluent innings, but it was vital for RCB as their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 184-7 with a crowd of more than 91,000 erupting in joy for their superstar. A teary-eyed Kohli, who has played in all 18 of RCB's campaigns including the three previous finals that they lost, dropped to the ground before being hugged by his teammates. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled,' said Kohli before launching into an impassioned defence of the oldest and longest format of the game. 'This moment is right up there with the best moments in my career. But it still ranks five levels below Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket. 'So I would just urge the youngsters coming through... if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it.' Punjab head coach Ricky Ponting said: 'I totally understand what he (Kohli) means'. Two-time World Cup winner Kohli has now walked away from two international formats after he gave up T20s following India's World Cup triumph last year. One of the all-time greats across all formats of the game, Kohli has always been the perfect poster boy of the five-day game with his prolific run-scoring and on-field passion in whites. 'King Kohli' ended his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. In the IPL, Kohli joined Bengaluru at the start of lucrative league in 2008 and stuck with them after the disappointment of losing side the finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Kohli remained a key player for his team this season with 657 runs including eight half-centuries in 15 innings, often playing the anchor after opening the batting. 'Tonight I'll sleep like a baby,' said Kohli, who hinted that a full retirement may not be far off. 'I have an opportunity to play this game for not many years, there's an end-date to our career. 'And by the time I hang up my boots, I want to sit at home and say I gave it everything I had.'
