Cricket-Australia's Maxwell quits ODIs to focus on T20 World Cup

MELBOURNE (Reuters) -Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from one-day internationals to focus on next year's T20 World Cup, the country's cricket board said on Monday.
Maxwell took the decision to prioritise his preparation for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, and his commitment to franchise leagues, Cricket Australia (CA) said in a statement.
"I think back to right at the start I was picked ahead of my time and out of the blue. I was just proud just to be playing a couple of games for Australia. I thought I was just going to have that," the two-time World Cup winner said in the statement.
"Since then, I have been able to go through the up and downs of being dropped, being brought back, playing in a few World Cups and being a part of some great teams."
The 36-year-old has played 149 ODIs for Australia, scoring 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7 - second only to Andre Russell's 130.22.
Maxwell's 201 not out from 128 balls while battling cramps in a 2023 World Cup match against Afghanistanis considered the greatest knock in this format.
Maxwell, who played the last of his seven tests in 2017, told the Final Word Podcast that the toll of 50-overs cricket, especially after a leg injury he suffered in 2022, affected his fielding ability during the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how (the) body was reacting to the conditions," he said.
"I had a good chat with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward," he told the Final Word Podcast.
"We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'."
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg congratulated Maxwell for "one of the most exciting and influential one day international careers in the format's history".
"Glenn's ballistic batting has lit up the cricket world and been one of the cornerstones of Australia's continued success in the 50 over game, including his heroic role in the 2023 World Cup triumph," Greenberg said.

MUNICH, GERMANY: Hosts Germany insisted that playing the Nations League finals at home was a "privilege", dismissing suggestions of additional pressure ahead of Wednesday's semi-final against Portugal in Munich. Spain target 'enormously important' Nations League defence
BARCELONA: Spain are aiming to become the first team to defend the Nations League trophy, with Luis de la Fuente's side going from strength to strength on the international stage ahead of next year's World Cup. The coach often reflects on La Roja's triumph at the 2023 tournament, which was an early indicator that a young Spanish side were on their way back to the top. It proved the springboard to Euro 2024 glory, and De la Fuente now wants to continue Spain's resurgence by retaining the title this summer in Germany. It would bode well for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer, where Spain will be among the favourites. They face France in the Nations League semi-finals in Stuttgart before a potential final against either Germany or Portugal. "We attach enormous importance to it – it's almost more difficult than a European Championship, and we want to be the first team to win it twice," De la Fuente told reporters last week. "We want to continue competing at the highest level with these teams." After European Championship wins in 2008 and 2012, sandwiching their 2010 World Cup triumph in South Africa, the Spanish national team experienced a slump. Ecstatic Kohli revels in first IPL title, albeit below Test highs
VIRAT Kohli said on Tuesday he had given his 'youth and prime' to land one of the best moments of his career as Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured him a first-ever Indian Premier League T20 title at the 18th time of asking. The 36-year-old Kohli, however, confessed that the six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, sweet as it was, ranked 'five levels below Test cricket'. The former India captain, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, top-scored with 43 as Bengaluru posted 190-9 in the final. It was not his most fluent innings, but it was vital for RCB as their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 184-7 with a crowd of more than 91,000 erupting in joy for their superstar. A teary-eyed Kohli, who has played in all 18 of RCB's campaigns including the three previous finals that they lost, dropped to the ground before being hugged by his teammates. 'I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled,' said Kohli before launching into an impassioned defence of the oldest and longest format of the game. Kohli remained a key player for his team this season with 657 runs including eight half-centuries in 15 innings, often playing the anchor after opening the batting. 'Tonight I'll sleep like a baby,' said Kohli, who hinted that a full retirement may not be far off. 'I have an opportunity to play this game for not many years, there's an end-date to our career. 'And by the time I hang up my boots, I want to sit at home and say I gave it everything I had.'
