Crespi, Santa Margarita, Corona, St. John Bosco reach Division 1 baseball semifinals
'Sometimes it's better to be lucky,' Crespi coach Mike Glendenning said.
The game ended in the bottom of the ninth with a Nate Lopez pop fly falling in left field as Mira Costa's shortstop, left fielder and center fielder tried to catch it. It scored the winning run in the Celts' 3-2 victory.
What a game it was. Tyler Walton was cruising along with a one-hitter and a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning for Crespi. With one swing, Lucas Schermer of Mira Costa sent an 89 mph fastball far over the left-field wall to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead. Crespi fans were stunned and suddenly silent.
Just before Crespi players went to hit in the bottom of the seventh, catcher Landon Hodge gathered his teammates in the dugout and reminded them to trust each other.
'We've been here before and came through,' he said.
Up came Gavin Huff, one of 11 seniors set to graduate Friday night. He hit a ball to left field into the wind down the line. It carried to the foul pole, struck it, then caromed back onto the field. The umpires signaled home run to tie the game.
Mira Costa junior pitcher Garrett Jacobs was magnificent, striking out six in seven innings. Hodge finished with three hits for Crespi (24-2). Diego Velazquez threw three scoreless innings of relief. Mira Costa (28-3) had its 26-game winning streak come to an end. Crespi advanced to Tuesday's semifinals against host Santa Margarita.
Afterward, Crespi's seniors were hustled into two vans and driven from Hartunian Field to the Celts' Encino campus to shower, change and participate in graduation ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Hodge's uniform, hands and arms were so covered in dirt from three hours of catching, sliding and hitting that he might have needed a car wash to make it to graduation.
More drama happened at Villa Park, where Trinity League champion St. John Bosco pulled out a 4-3 win in nine innings. Jaden Jefferson had an RBI double in the top of the ninth. But the big moment was the bottom of the seventh, when Villa Park came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game and had the winning run on third with two outs. Jack Champlin came out of the bullpen to record a strikeout for the Braves.
Top-seeded Corona received a leadoff home run from Anthony Murphy, his 11th of the season, and relied on a one-hitter from Ethin Bingaman to get past Norco 2-0. Norco freshman pitcher Jordan Ayala impressed with his performance. It will be Corona at St. John Bosco in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Santa Margarita got a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh from Warren Gravely IV to defeat Los Alamitos 5-4. Before that, Los Alamitos tied the game on a Sutton Deninno home run in the seventh.
West Ranch 10, Sultana 0: Hunter Manning threw a no-hitter and struck out eight to move West Ranch into the Division 2 semifinals. It was the second no-hitter this week by West Ranch pitchers. Nolan Stoll and Mikey Murr hit home runs.
Etiwanda 8, Servite 3: Derick Kim had two hits and four RBIs and LJ Roellig and Josh Adams hit home runs to send the Eagles into the Division 2 semifinals.
Fountain Valley 5, Torrrance 2: Logan Hunt threw five scoreless innings while allowing one hit for Fountain Valley.
Mater Dei 2, Foothill 0: Brandon Thomas struck out 13 with no walks for the Monarchs, his second shutout of the Division 2 playoffs. Gavin Lauridsen struck out nine for Foothill.
University 8, Jefferson 1: Evan Han had two hits and two RBIs in the City Section Division III championship game.

The high school football season begins this weekend with Week 0 games. Let's examine storylines and questions to be answered: What will it take for a team other than Mater Dei or St. John Bosco to reach the Southern Section Division 1 final? The answer is luck, because it's not happening. Every season since 2016, the Monarchs or Braves have won the Southern Section Division 1 title and have met in the finals every season except for 2021, when Servite, led by its two future first-round draft picks, Mason Graham and Teteroia McMillan, beat St. John Bosco in the semifinals. Those two schools have offensive and defensive lines too big, too strong and with too much depth for others to take down in the transfer era. They face off at the end of the regular season on Halloween, then will likely play again four weeks later for the section title. What will life be like in the City Section after the collapse of Narbonne for rules violations? It's back to beating Birmingham if you want to win the City Section Open Division title. The Patriots had their 48-game City winning streak end with a loss to Narbonne but that was turned into a forfeit victory, so the streak is at 49. It's a wide-open City race. Look for Carson, San Pedro and Palisades to join the Patriots for the right to win a missing trophy (yes, put up a reward to find it). What's the strongest position in the Southland this season? It's the defensive line. There are so many elite linemen and ends capable of making an impact this season, and beyond that quarterbacks better be warned to wear extra equipment to cushion the blows about to be inflicted. From Mater Dei's Tomuhini Topui to Gardena Serra's Khary Wilder, from Sierra Canyon's Richard Wesley to St. John Bosco's Dutch Horisk, expect lots of sacks and forced fumbles. Which teams will be surprise success stories? A new campus and new football stadium has Compton excited and ready for a big turnaround after going 3-7 last season. Former L.A. Jordan coach Derek Benton has taken over at Fremont, so perhaps the Pathfinders can move up. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame has received some big-time transfers, putting the Knights in position to be competitive with Sierra Canyon and Gardena Serra in the Mission League. Agoura quarterback Gavin Gray is back from a knee injury, so the Chargers are ready to roll. Servite has a group of track athletes to be unleashed in football, and speed can be a game-changer. Cathedral is poised to be a title contender as quarterback Jaden Jefferson receives help on the offensive line. Burbank was impressive in seven-on-seven competitions and will try to prove its linemen can help out. Which teams must find replacements for big-time players from last season? Newbury Park needs someone to become the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Brady Smigiel after the graduation of Shane Rosenthal. Mater Dei will be trying out a trio of running backs to take on the role previously held by Jordon Davison, who is now at Oregon. Sierra Canyon's bid to be a Division 1 contender will come down to play at quarterback (senior Chase Everett, junior Demarco Hernandez and senior Laird Finkel are competing for the starting job). Mission Viejo must find someone to duplicate Jaden Williams' 23 sacks. JSerra is turning to untested quarterback Koa Smith-Mayall to replace Ryan Hopkins, who left for Mater Dei. Which coaches will be under the microscope? Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer takes over at Santa Margarita, having put together a top staff that includes last season's interim coach, Steve Fifita. No one has a bigger task ahead than Narbonne first-year coach Doug Bledsoe, whose team is ineligible for the postseason and saw an exodus of players. Former NFL defensive back Troy Hill is a first-year coach at St. Bonaventure with no head coaching experience. Rick Clausen takes over at Westlake, which went 0-10 last season. Former Crespi coach Dameon Porter gets a second chance at Harvard-Westlake, which forfeited a game in 2023 because of a lack of players. Which freshmen could have an impact? Seven SWLA kickers who keep their teams on the right foot, weaponizing third phase of the game
When it comes to kicking in football, high-pressure situations come with the territory. It could be a last-second field goal attempt, an extra-point kick to break an overtime tie, or a punt to pin the opponent deep on its side of the field. Luke Wainwright, Noah Menard, Sam Smith, Cameron Bonin, Payton Crawford, Braylon Beard, and Monte Farmer are a few of the returning starters in Southwest Louisiana looking to use their precision kicking to help their high school football teams in tough situations. Luke Wainwright Wainwright, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior, experienced a tricky situation firsthand last year. With 15 seconds on the clock in Grand Lake's Non-select Division IV bi-district playoff game against Jonesboro-Hodge, he drilled a 22-yard field goal for a 23-20 win. Earlier in the season, he made a 35-yarder, which was the second-longest in Southwest Louisiana in 2024 behind St. Louis Catholic's Zachry Sugandi- Pruitt's 53-yarder. Wainwright, who also plays golf and was the Division IV state runner-up medalist, made 33 of 37 point-after attempts. He will also see time at wide receiver this year. 'He has done really well this offseason,' said head coach Jeff Wainwright, Luke's uncle. 'I think he gained a lot of confidence last year, especially at the end of the year against Jonesboro-Hodge when he had a game-winning field goal. Those are big things for kids to bring back to the table the next year. He's already been in those pressure situations.' Sam Smith Before Smith became South Beauregard's kicking specialist last season, he made a name for himself on the soccer pitch. He scored a single-season school record 45 goals in his junior year. On the gridiron, Smith (6-2, 185) made 33 of 35 PATs, and head coach Brad Kellogg is looking for him to keep teams from getting any yardage off kickoffs. 'He's a soccer kid,' Kellogg said. 'Matter of fact, possibly a scholarship soccer kid, and he's got a strong leg. 'We're really hoping he can kick it in the end zone like St. Louis every time. He's really been working on that. We don't kick a lot of field goals. He's so strong-legged. He just keeps trying to get that ball in the end zone every time.' Payton Crawford Crawford (5-9, 180) made the 5-2A all-district second team as a freshman last season. Oakdale head coach Kevin Bertrand sees his young kicker continually improving after making 11 of 17 kicks last year and will use him at receiver. 'He's been working on it all summer, and he's been doing a good job,' Bertrand said. 'We know going in that he's a guy that understands what we're trying to do.' Menard, Bonin, Farmer, and Beard spread their talents all over the field at multiple positions. Noah Menard Menard plays all over the field for Hamilton Christian and earned all-district honors last season as a wide receiver, placekicker, and punter. He made 30 of 47 PATs, caught 20 passes for 216, and scored six total touchdowns. Braylon Beard Beard (6-1, 175) was the 5-2A second team all-district punter last season made 62 tackles with five sacks and eight tackles for a loss on defense. This year, he will start at defensive end and tight end and is working to learn to play offensive line. Cameron Bonin Bonin, a 5-9, 160-pound senior, was an all-district first team and American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Small Schools punter. He also plays quarterback and defensive back for Lake Arthur. As a junior, he averaged 38.7 yards a punt, made 19 of 27 PATs, and kicked a 22-yard field goal. Running the offense, he completed 36 of 77 passes for 870 yards and nine touchdowns, splitting time with fellow senior Jaxson Davis. Monte Farmer Farmer is a 6-8, 175-pound senior two-sport athlete. He averaged 38.7 yards per punt for Washington-Marion while running the offense at quarterback with 1,442 passing yards and eight touchdowns. The multi-faceted athlete has also played receiver at times and was the American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Big School basketball MVP last season. He averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks a game while playing nearly every position on the court.

Defending flag football champion Orange Lutheran aims to achieve even more this season
Last year's theme for the Orange Lutheran flag football team was 'Set the Standard.' The Lancers did just that, finishing 23-2 and defeating Newport Harbor 20-18 to win the inaugural Southern Section Division 1 title and secure the No. 1 ranking in California. Coach Kristen Sherman revealed this season's theme is 'Raise the Bar' and, having graduated only one starter, it looks like her team could be even better than a year ago. It may have to be if it wants to defend its crown as the talent throughout the Southland is deeper than ever. 'We're hoping to reach a higher level this year,' said Sherman, whose husband, Rod, is head coach of Orange Lutheran's football squad. 'These new rules change a lot. I may have preferred the old rules, but the girls like punting and returning, so I think it'll be more fun for them.' Since defensive players will now be able to line up six yards closer to the ball, an elite quarterback will be essential, and the Lancers have the best in Makena Cook, the reigning CIF player of the year. On Aug. 6, the two-sport athlete committed to Georgia for soccer, but her focus right now is on a repeat. 'We're definitely better ... but it's a clean slate,' Cook said after tossing six touchdown passes against host Long Beach Poly in a scrimmage Thursday — her first competitive game since November. As a sophomore last season, Cook passed for 6,611 yards and 97 touchdowns, 20 of them caught by All-CIF receiver Julia Oberholtzer (now a senior) who also led the defense with 114 flag pulls and eight interceptions. The Lancers open the season Wednesday at Woodbridge. Sherman once again filled the schedule with quality opponents, including a Sept. 4 clash with Irvine Northwood, which took the Division 2 title last fall thanks to Natalie Keith, who earned division player of the year honors after throwing for five touchdowns in the final against Trabuco Hills. Sherman predicted Trinity League competition will be a 'smack in the face.' JSerra's roster features three incoming freshmen who are members of the 15U junior national team — quarterback Katherine Meier and wide receiver/defensive backs Tessa Russell and Ava Irwin. Kendra Hansen will be a scoring threat every time she touches the ball for Mater Dei, and running the offense at Santa Margarita will be All-CIF senior Madi Lam, who quarterbacked her Conquer Chargers club team at the NFL Flag Championships in Canton, Ohio, in July. Division 1 finalist Newport Harbor graduated All-CIF quarterback Maia Helmar, but sophomore Scarlett Guyser will take over the position. Cooper Dick (a Texas Tech soccer commit) and Maddy Michel are set to be her primary targets. Skylie Cid led the team in touchdowns as a freshman. The Sailors beat Orange Lutheran in triple overtime in a tournament at Beckman over the summer, but Cook did not play. Huntington Beach has all the offensive firepower it needs to challenge Newport Harbor for Sunset League supremacy with the return of Roxie Shaia, who threw for 7,465 yards and 99 touchdowns in 2024, and receiver/safety Taylor Savage, who racked up 1,491 receiving yards. Last fall, Ventura lost a shootout to Huntington Beach in the Division 1 quarterfinals, but the Cougars could ride the arm of senior Ava Ortman to a deeper playoff run in 2025. Statistically, she was one of the best in the section with 6,974 yards, 110 touchdowns and a 141.2 rating. In its opener Thursday, Ventura takes on Camarillo, which has one of the top two-way players in Ventura County in Stella Alessi (41 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season). Long Beach Poly will seek to three-peat in the Moore League, but it will be a taller task without All-CIF quarterback Kenzie Paimany, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament playing soccer. She threw for 60 touchdowns last year. The most versatile player for the Jackrabbits is senior receiver/linebacker Ki'ele Ho-Ching, who has committed to Oklahoma for softball. 'We're hoping she can come back towards the end of the season,' Poly coach Rob Shock said about Paimany. 'We take every game as a tough game. Nothing's given, everything's earned.' Lakewood St. Joseph suffered only one defeat in 22 games last year, however, the Jesters are poised to go further with junior signal-caller Lexi Loya (5,377 yards and 73 touchdowns last fall) throwing to sophomore receiver Jaclyn Brennan (76 catches for 985 yards and 16 touchdowns). The City Section is up to 93 teams, and the one to beat appears to be Narbonne, led by its All-City two-wayers Faith Ugoje, Shayla Rivera and Luna Orozco. The Gauchos beat King/Drew 7-0 for the Division I title last year and twice defeated the 2024 Open Division winner Banning in the summer. Ugoje was chosen Division I player of the year after rushing for 1,660 yards, catching 60 passes for 828 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns as a freshman under City coach of the year Sherrelle Holmes. Also contending for the Marine League crown will be is two-time Open finalist San Pedro. Teams to watch: Orange Lutheran, JSerra, Santa Margarita, Newport Harbor, Mater Dei, Huntington Beach, Northwood, Eastvale Roosevelt, Ventura, Narbonne, Lakewood St. Joseph, Aliso Niguel, Trabuco Hills, Anaheim Canyon.
