Pune: The
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation
(MSRTC) will convert seven Shivshahi buses into non-air-conditioned semi-luxury vehicles, signalling the start of discontinuing the previously prestigious Shivshahi service.
"The decision in this regard was taken in the board meeting on Monday. Accordingly, the seven Shivshahi buses will be converted into
non-AC semi-luxury vehicles
on an experimental basis. The buses will be redesigned to resemble MSRTC's Hirkani semi-luxury vehicles," a senior MSRTC official said. Abhijit Bhosle, the public relations officer of MSRTC, confirmed the development too.TOI, in its report last month, had reported that MSRTC was looking to stop Shivshahi operations and convert them into non-AC buses.
The first batch of Shivshahi buses rolled out in 2017 to provide a comfortable AC ride to passengers at less fare as compared to Shivneri buses operating between Pune and Mumbai.
At present, there are 790 Shivshahi buses in MSRTC fleet."The Shivshahi buses are in poor condition with non-functional ACs, dirty interiors and frequent breakdowns. MSRTC didn't take any steps to revive them. I travelled in these buses before the Covid-19 pandemic and recently, and there has been a strak decline," Satej Dore, a frequent commuter and a bank employee, told TOI.Jatin Palke, another frequent commuter, disagreed and said: "Instead of buying new buses, MSRTC should have revamped the existing Shivshahi buses with a fresh look and proper maintenance. If they can't take care of their current fleet, there's no guarantee they'll do better with the new ones."Sources in MSRTC said by year-end, they would be able to take a call on stopping Shivshahi buses. "There have been several complaints about the buses. If the experiment doesn't work, we will think about other options, which can include the revival of these buses," another official said.

Samruddhi's defining feat is India's widest 8-km twin tunnel through the Ghats

An important element of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, whose final stretch was formally inaugurated on Thursday, is an 8-kilometre-long twin tunnel, the widest and fourth longest road tunnel in India, constructed by boring through tonnes of solid rock in the Western Ghats. Commuters currently using the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway must navigate the winding roads of Kasara Ghat. The stretch from Kasara to Igatpuri, covering 19 km, typically takes around 30 minutes, with vehicles climbing steep slopes through sharp bends. A Dream Turns into Reality… CM Devendra Fadnavis enjoyed a drive on the 'Hinduhrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg' along with DCM Eknath Shinde and DCM Ajit Pawar. This visionary project, and brainchild of CM Devendra Fadnavis himself, stands as a… — CMO Maharashtra (@CMOMaharashtra) June 5, 2025 The new twin tunnels, however, eliminates this strenuous journey. This twin-tube road tunnel, 8 kilometres in length and 17.61 metres in width, is the widest road tunnel in the country and the fourth longest by length. It reaches a height of 9.12 metres and allows traffic to bypass the steep Kasara Ghat, reducing travel time between Kasara and Igatpuri to just eight minutes. According to MSRDC officials, the tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which involved excavation through solid rock. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns between March 2020 and May 2021, the tunnelling work was completed within two years in October 2023. Along with the tunnel, 17 valley type that span 10.56 km, 21.12 km for both lanes, were also built. The longest among them is 2.28 km, which is located just after the Igatpuri tunnel ends towards the Mumbai side. To make these viaducts, engineers needed to construct piers up to 84 metres high, all this with the persistent challenges of hard rock formations in the valley and adverse weather conditions. The construction in narrow and windy valleys under monsoon conditions added safety issues for workmen, which was an additional responsibility for the MSRDC and other stakeholders. 'Excavations 40 metres deep were needed in many places and the high wind velocities made working on higher levels extremely risky. But by exacting engineering and severe safety guidelines, the constructions were finished on time,' a senior MSRDC official told The Indian Express. K Mallikharjuna Rao, business unit head, Hydro and Underground at Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who carried out the work on the tunnel and viaduct for package 14 of the greenfield expressway said, 'We faced unprecedented rainfall that took a toll on our tunnel construction as well as impeded our efforts at Viaduct-II. Due to heavy showers and dense fog, visibility remained an issue. However, we used the best safety practices to enable a safe work environment.' Apart from the engineering marvel, the last phase has three new interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane facilitating regional connectivity for passenger as well as freight traffic. The opening of this section now makes the entire 701 km Samruddhi Mahamarg corridor open for public, putting Nagpur and Mumbai on an eight hour driving distance from each other.

EU warns China's rare earth export curbs may trigger supply crisis

The European Union has raised urgent concerns with China over its tightened export restrictions on rare earth elements and magnets, warning of a potential supply crisis that could cripple industrial output across the bloc. EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefcovic pressed Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on the issue during talks in Paris this week, calling the situation 'extremely disruptive' and 'alarming' for key sectors, especially automotive manufacturing. 'Rare earths and permanent magnets are absolutely essential for industrial production — from cars to washing machines,' Šefcovic said on Wednesday. 'If the issue isn't addressed, there could be huge production difficulties in a short period of time.' China's response to Trump tariffs affects global partners China, which supplies nearly 90 per cent of the world's rare earths, imposed export controls in April following the latest round of reciprocal tariffs from US President Donald Trump. The curbs now require export licences for seven rare earth elements, including dysprosium, gadolinium, and terbium, along with several rare earth magnets. Although initially aimed at the US, the restrictions affect all of China's trading partners. The move has prompted EU governments, business chambers, and automakers to seek an urgent resolution. Šefcovic said the EU and China compared data on licence applications and approvals, but discrepancies were found. The EU will now share company-provided figures with Beijing in an effort to clarify the mismatch. Automotive sector fears repeat of chip crisis European carmakers are already feeling the effects. Mercedes-Benz is in talks with suppliers to secure short-term stocks, while BMW has reported supply disruptions, according to Bloomberg. The shortages are drawing comparisons to the global chip crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted production lines worldwide. Rare earths deepen EU-China trade rift The rare earth row adds to mounting EU-China trade tensions. This week, EU members voted to exclude Chinese firms from its medical procurement market, citing Beijing's refusal to reciprocate. The EU also plans to impose a €2 levy on small parcels from Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Temu and Shein, in an effort to curb the influx of cheap imports. Beijing has accused the bloc of discriminatory treatment. In response to supply concerns, the European Commission has announced 13 overseas projects to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earths. These include mining and processing ventures in Malawi, South Africa, Brazil, Canada, and New Caledonia. ALSO READ | Dialogue continues despite trade friction Despite rising tensions, both sides have pledged to maintain dialogue on rare earths. The EU imported 6,000 tonnes of rare earths from China in 2024, representing 46.3 per cent of its total rare earth imports. 'We want to find a pragmatic solution — fast,' Šefcovic said, emphasising the urgency of resolving the dispute.
