'Eidi' complaints mar Eid travel
Many passengers who were heading to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other parts of the country expressed concern about fare hikes. A few said that despite the presence of officials, some transporters still attempted to overcharge, especially during evening hours.
When contacted the Islamabad district administration, the spokesman said that the authority has taken notice of the issue and launched monitoring operations at all major bus stands.
According to officials, several teams led by assistant commissioners are visiting terminals, including Faizabad and 26 Number stop, to prevent overcharging. In this regard, Islamabad Deputy Commissioner, Irfan Nawaz Memon has directed that all assistant commissioners and magistrates remain on duty at bus stands throughout the Eid rush. He said that any transporter caught demanding more than the approved fare will face immediate action. He also urged citizens not to pay even one rupee above the official fare.
"If any driver or operator asks for extra money, report it on the spot," he said, adding that passengers should cooperate with the administration to stop illegal practices. The administration's move is aimed at ensuring smooth travel and protecting passengers from fare manipulation during the busy holiday period, the spokesman added.
DC Irfan Memon also emphasised the need to ensure that the passengers treated with respect. "Providing a fair and decent journey to all travelers is our responsibility," he said. Operations at the terminals include random checks, inquiries from passengers about fares, and verification of fare charts displayed at ticket counters. In several instances, transporters were warned or fined for failing to follow the rules.
The deputy commissioner has appealed to the public to report any violations directly to the assistant commissioners present at the terminals. He said such complaints are being addressed immediately, with transporters either being penalised or barred from continuing their services. The administration has also set up helpline numbers and complaint desks at major terminals to facilitate passengers.
Special squads have been formed to monitor transport activities during peak hours. The administration has also warned transport companies and terminal managers that strict action will be taken if any violations are reported.

Zakat handouts bring relief to Pindi households
Up to 10,000 deserving Zakat beneficiaries across the Rawalpindi district received on Tuesday the financial assistance of Rs24,000, inclusive of arrears, per family after a lapse of 19 months or so. The District Zakat Council has disbursed financial aid to widows, low-income households, and individuals living below the poverty line. In addition, Eid gifts for both Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha were distributed alongside the cash assistance. On Tuesday, the full amount was transferred via JazzCash to all eligible recipients, including widowed women. Furthermore, the fines of ordinary prisoners at Adiala Jail — those who have completed their sentences but remain incarcerated due to an inability to pay their fines — are also scheduled to be paid today (Wednesday). Jail authorities have been requested to provide a list of such individuals. The cost of JazzCash transactions has been covered by the District Zakat Council, ensuring that each recipient receives the full sum of Rs24,000 in cash. While the majority of beneficiaries have begun receiving their payments, minor delays of a few hours may occur due to network congestion and technical glitches. The Council, however, expects all disbursements to be completed by Wednesday (today). Numerous beneficiaries have already confirmed receipt of the funds. The District Zakat Officer has advised that any eligible person who doesn't receive the payment within the next 15 hours may approach the Council office for assistance. Funds for dowry support and scholarships for deserving students — both male and female — are expected to be released next month, with the application review process already underway. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Provincial Parliamentary Secretary for the Zakat Council, MPA Malik Iftikhar, announced that this year the Council would also cover fines — up to Rs50,000 — for eligible prisoners who have served their sentences but remain in custody solely due to unpaid fines. "This initiative has already commenced in Adiala Jail, as well as in the Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal district jails," he said, and clarified that this financial relief would not be extended to habitual offenders or individuals convicted of murder, robbery, or terrorism-related offences.

State will ensure justice: CM terms Degari killing case ‘test case'
QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti on Monday clarified that there was no marital relationship between the man and woman who were brutally killed in an alleged honour killing in Sanjeedi Degari, a suburb of Quetta. Terming it a 'test case' for his administration, he vowed that all those responsible for the crime would be brought to justice. Speaking at an emergency press conference in Quetta, the chief minister said that 11 suspects had so far been arrested, and law enforcement agencies were conducting raids to apprehend more. 'Whoever is involved in this case will be arrested, produced before a court, and punished in accordance with the law,' he asserted. CM Bugti rejected the widespread impression on social media that the deceased were a recently married couple. 'There was no marital relationship between the two,' he said, adding that both the woman and the man were already parents—she had five children and the man had five or six. The clarification comes in the wake of a disturbing video that went viral last week, purportedly showing the execution of the couple in the name of honour. The incident, believed to have taken place days before Eid-ul-Azha, sparked national outrage and prompted the Balochistan High Court to take suo motu notice. The chief minister said the provincial administration had taken notice of the incident even before the video gained attention on social media. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice, stating that the state would not abandon the oppressed. 'This case involves victims, and the state is firmly standing with them,' he said. He also confirmed that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) concerned had been suspended for negligence, and further disciplinary actions would be taken against those who failed in their duties. Calling the Degari killings a 'test case,' Bugti stressed that no individual or group could be allowed to operate above the law. He said the incident had raised questions about the misuse of Jirga systems and tribal authority in criminal matters. 'No attempt is being made to disarm tribal society, but no society can condone such killings,' he said. 'The factors behind this crime must be uncovered. Jirgas that promote such actions are being actively stopped by the state. The government will be run under the Constitution.' In response to questions about the broader law and order situation in the province, the chief minister said that security forces had killed 10 militants in an operation conducted the previous day. 'These terrorists seek soft targets and attempt to flee after carrying out attacks. But our forces are effectively countering them,' he said. Bugti criticised elements that he claimed were exaggerating the security threat in Balochistan, stating that the situation was gradually improving. 'The people should not be afraid. We are defeating terrorism and will restore peace across the province.'

Six drowned picnickers' corpses retrieved
The bodies of six members of two families who had drowned in in the Indus and Jhelum rivers have been found. In Bhakkar, a family outing to the Indus river ended in tragedy when a 21-year-old woman drowned along with her two young cousins. According to local officials, a six-year-old girl slipped into the river, after which her 13-year-old sister jumped in to save her. Seeing both girls drowning, their 21-year-old cousin also leapt into the river to rescue them. However, the strong current swept all three into deeper water. Upon hearing the screams for help from Lal Shah, the husband of the woman, local residents began a search and retrieved the bodies from the river after about half an hour. Bhakkar District Police Officer Shehzad Rafiq Awan told The Express Tribune that the deceased woman had been married 15 days earlier and was visiting a relative, Syed Taqqi Shah, in Jhok Jando, along with her husband, from the nearby town of Behal. Due to the river's proximity, they had gone for sightseeing at the Basti Mian Khan dyke with the two young cousins. The funeral of the woman was held in Kathanwalla and of Taqi Shah's daughters in Jhok Jando. The DPO explained that the incident had occurred during daytime and the water was seven to eight feet deep at the spot where the six-year-old girl had drowned. Her 13-year-old sister and newlywed cousin jumped into the same dangerous area in an attempt to save her, resulting in all three losing their lives. As the area descended into gloom over the tragedy, the official emphasised the importance of avoiding to take young children to the riversides. He suggested that even adults should prefer alternative locations for recreation. Meanwhile, the bodies of three members of a family from Kot Lashkari Khan in Sahiwal district were retrieved from River Jhelum. The family had gone to the river for recreation on the third day of Eid. A woman was taking selfies near the river when she slipped into the water. Her sister attempted to rescue her. Eventually, four family members were swept away while trying to save each other from drowning. Local residents managed to save one young man, Zeeshan Anwar. Sarfaraz Raja, his wife Nida and sister-in-law Nazia Sajjad drowned in the river. Their bodies were found seven kilometres downstream 20 hours later. The bodies were retrieved by local divers and teams from Rescue 1122.
