
Major UK car plant to cut 250 jobs as electric vehicle sales flop
Hundreds of workers at Nissan's Sunderland factory are bracing themselves for job losses as the car giant grapples with dwindling demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and plummeting profits.
The Japanese car manufacturer has confirmed plans to axe approximately 250 jobs at the North East plant, which equates to around four percent of its 6,000-strong workforce, through a voluntary redundancy scheme.
Office staff and shop floor supervisors will bear the brunt of the job cuts, while production line workers will be unaffected, according to Nissan.
This comes as a blow to Britain's largest car plant, a stalwart of the UK automotive industry since its inauguration in 1986, famously known for producing the Nissan Bluebird.
Today, it stands as Nissan's sole manufacturing site in Europe and Sunderland's biggest employer.
These job cuts form part of a significant cost-saving initiative as the company strives to recover ¥400bn (£2bn) following a harsh year that saw EV sales stumble across Europe, reports the Express.
Nissan has invested billions in its ambition to become a leading EV manufacturer, including a hefty £2bn investment to revamp its Sunderland site for electric car production, with the goal of phasing out petrol and diesel models by 2030.
However, this gamble has encountered a hitch. Interest in EVs hasn't grown as anticipated, impacting Nissan's bottom line.
Weak demand in China, pricing wars in the US, and escalating costs for energy and labour have further dented profits.
Nissan has reported a catastrophic 88 percent drop in profits for the full year 2025, its poorest performance in 25 years.
In an attempt to bounce back, Nissan is embarking on a major restructuring effort that will see about 20,000 jobs slashed from its global workforce of 133,500.
A spokesperson for Nissan commented:
"This week we are beginning discussions with some of our team in Sunderland about the opportunity to voluntarily leave Nissan, with support from the company."
The move signals increasing strain on established car manufacturers as they navigate the rocky transition to electric vehicles and grapple with the challenge of balancing long-term investments with immediate survival.

Maki & Ramen Aberdeen: What did we make of ‘Scotland's Best Japanese Restaurant' opening in Union Square?
Tonight we headed to Maki & Ramen, the newest restaurant to arrive in Union Square Aberdeen. You can find the new restaurant on the upper mall level, situated beside Estabulo. The menu includes ramen, sushi, donburi, gyoza, karaage, plus a range of drinks and desserts. With the restaurant opening to the public tomorrow, we were the first to try this colourful Japanese cuisine in Aberdeen. Having been dubbed 'Scotland's best Japanese restaurant' by Deliveroo, Andy and I had high expectations on our visit. Here's what we made of our first try of Maki and Ramen. The restaurant has a stylish design, with bright pink faux cherry blossom trees dotted around the unit. There's a visually satisfying contrast between light wood panels and black elements. Notably, banging of the Taiko drum welcomes you into the restaurant, with the staff announcing 'Irasshaimase!', Japanese for 'welcome, come in'. Maki & Ramen founder Michael Salvador, 34, is there to welcome us too. After founding the business in Edinburgh in 2015, there are now 13 restaurants around the UK. The entrepreneur attended Aberdeen Grammar School between 2003 and 2008, and says Aberdeen was the first place he tried Japanese food. 'I remember skipping one of my classes and going to Yatai Izakaya,' he told The Press and Journal. 'And I just thought Japanese food was awesome.' For Michael, it's all about keeping the restaurant affordable for all. 'It's about making this style of environment accessible for everyone,' he adds. 'We don't want to price people out of our menus. 'You'll find people come here on first dates, people come here in joggers – we have that wide array of people, and we've never really lost that no matter where we go.' I'm impressed by the variety on the menu, which offers everything from the memorably-named 'seafood hell' ramen to pumpkin croquettes. Plus there's a huge range of sushi, donburi and yakisoba. We try out a few of the most popular side dishes, starting with a hot dish, the (£7.50). This fried Karaage chicken has a light, crispy batter, and it is generously coated in a sweet, tacky sauce. The chicken thigh meat is tender and juicy, making each bite incredibly moreish. : 5/5 : 4/5 This dish starts things off on a high – would the rest of the dishes continue at the same level? Next up we went for the eye-catching (£11.90). This one seems quite pricy. The colourful plate of sushi consists of uramaki, topped with salmon, tuna and sea bream. Creamy avocado and crunchy cucumber fills the centre of the rice too. I really liked the pretty presentation of this, but the flavour felt a little lacking sadly. 3/5 3/5 Unsurprisingly given it is in the restaurant's name, there is a huge section on the menu dedicated to ramen. We go for the most popular, the (£14.50), which features a hefty portion of braised pork belly. There's also a soft boiled egg – with a perfectly jammy yolk – nestled among the veg. Yum. The milky-coloured broth itself is rich and flavourful, with the savoury, umami flavour of the black garlic present but not overpowering. It's a task to drag Andy away from this one, he's a big fan of the dish. 4/5 4/5 Another dish we try from the menu of sides is the chicken gyoza. I have tried plenty of gyoza in my time, and this is up there as one of the best. The thin pastry wrapping is deliciously soft, and the ground chicken filling is salty, umami perfection. If you like your gyoza fried till super crispy, this isn't for you – but we loved it. 5/5 4/5 The last dish we tried was the (£15), which, as the name suggests, packs a punch when it comes to heat. For Andy, the spice is overpowering – and it became all that he could taste. I really enjoyed this though: the colourful broth singes its way down your throat with a satisfying spice. The chicken – of which there is plenty – is nicely softened in the broth, and has plenty of flavour through it too. Again, the team nail the jammy yolk. The pak choi retains that crunchy bite to it too. Perfection. : 5/5 : 3/5 I'm a huge fan of Japanese cuisine, and I think it's easy to get this wrong. But my first try of Maki & Ramen certainly won't be my last. Several of the dishes wowed us, and there is a lot more to try as well. Dollar slips as markets digest Ukraine summit, await Fed comments
SINGAPORE, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The dollar dipped against major peers on Tuesday as markets assessed the outcome of a summit between leaders from the U.S., Europe and Ukraine, while awaiting policy cues from an annual Federal Reserve symposium later this week. The euro and sterling rose about 0.2% each to $1.1686 and $1.3524, respectively. The Swiss franc rose 0.3% and the Japanese yen ticked higher as well. U.S. President Donald Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end the war with Russia. Both Trump and Zelenskiy said they hoped Monday's gathering would eventually lead to three-way talks with Putin. The developments did little to give clear direction to foreign exchange markets while European equities gained and oil prices slid on Tuesday. Given that European energy costs are relatively low and undisrupted, developments related to the Russia-Ukraine war are unlikely to be major market movers, said Samy Chaar, chief economist at Lombard Odier. Many investors are away for summer holidays in the northern hemisphere contributing to thinner market liquidity. Analysts at MUFG reckon that if the talks prove successful in ending the conflict in Ukraine, it could provide more support for European currencies that have already outperformed this year. On the macro front, markets are awaiting the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole for any clues on the likely path of interest rates. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework. Powell is not expected to lock himself onto a monetary path before seeing August's round of data even though money market expectations of a rate cut next month remain above 80%, according to CME's FedWatch tool. "The market is expecting signs that a cut in September is a done deal. I am not sure the market is going to get that," Chaar said. The minutes of the Fed's July meeting are due later on Wednesday and could offer insight into policymakers' thinking about the trajectory of interest rates albeit the meeting took place before a weak labour market report prompted markets to price in cuts more aggressively. "With inflation essentially stuck over the past year, the tariff passthrough that we still expect, and the labor supply story keeping the unemployment rate historically low, we still think there is a strong case for the Fed to remain on hold," analysts at BofA Global Research said in a note. Cryptocurrencies were an exception to the otherwise mellow mood in markets, with bitcoin falling about 1% to notch a third straight day of declines after hitting a record high last week while ether was down 1.2% as well.
