Gulf countries welcome France's recognition of Palestinian state
KUWAIT: Kuwait has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron's announcement that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine, calling it a significant step toward achieving justice for the Palestinian people. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs lauded the French decision, describing it as a vital move that supports the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. The ministry stressed that the decision contributes to enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and to establish an independent state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
It also called on other nations to take similar steps in order to advance a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. France's move marks a major development in European diplomacy, making it the first G7 country to formally announce recognition of Palestine. The announcement was made by President Macron ahead of an upcoming United Nations meeting in September, where formal recognition is expected to be declared. Saudi Arabia, along with fellow Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states,
also welcomed the decision. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs described it as a 'historic decision' that reflects international consensus on the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state. It urged other countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to take similar 'positive steps.'
Qatar, which has played a key mediating role in indirect negotiations between Zionists and Hamas during the ongoing Gaza conflict, praised France's move as a significant show of support for the Palestinian cause. Its foreign ministry said the decision 'contributes to advancing prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.' The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, issued a statement praising France's stance, reaffirming collective Arab support for Palestinian statehood and lasting peace in the region.

Zionist fire kills 25
Gaza's civil defense agency said Zionist fire killed 25 people on Saturday in the Palestinian territory devastated by more than 21 months of war. Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP the dead included nine people killed in three separate air strikes in Gaza City. Eleven people were killed in four separate strikes near the southern city of Khan Yunis, while two were killed in a drone strike in Nuseirat refugee camp, he added. Bassal said three people were killed by Zionist gunfire while waiting for aid in three separate incidents in northern, central and southern Gaza. One of the three was killed 'after Zionist forces opened fire on people waiting for humanitarian aid' northwest of Gaza City, the agency said.
Witnesses told AFP that several thousand people had gathered in the area. One of them, Abu Samir Hamoudeh, 42, said the Zionist military opened fire 'while the people were waiting to approach the distribution point', located near a Zionist military post in the Zikim area, northwest of Sudaniyah. The Zionist military told AFP that its troops fired 'warning shots to distance the crowd' after identifying an 'immediate threat'. The civil defense agency said another man was killed by a drone strike near Khan Yunis, while one was killed by artillery fire in the Al-Bureij camp in central Gaza.
The Zionist military said it was continuing its operations in Gaza, adding that it killed members of a 'terrorist cell' which it accused of planting an explosive device. It said the air force had 'struck over 100 terror targets' across Gaza over the previous 24 hours. Bassal said civil defense teams also recovered the bodies of 12 people following Zionist bombardment north of Rafah the previous night. The recovery operation was conducted in coordination with the UN humanitarian office (OCHA), he said, adding that the bodies were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis.

5 years after Beirut port blast, Aoun promises justice
BEIRUT: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday vowed justice and accountability five years after a catastrophic explosion at Beirut's port, as the investigating judge finished questioning defendants, a judicial official said. Nobody has been held accountable for the August 4, 2020 blast—one of the world's largest non-nuclear explosions, which devastated swathes of the Lebanese capital, killing more than 220 people and injuring over 6,500. Authorities have said the explosion was triggered by a fire in a warehouse where tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer had been stored haphazardly for years after arriving by ship, despite repeated warnings to senior officials. Judge Tarek Bitar resumed his investigation this year as Lebanon's balance of power shifted following a war between Zionist entity and Hezbollah that weakened the Iran-backed militant group, which had spearheaded a campaign for Bitar's resignation. Aoun said the Lebanese state 'is committed to uncovering the whole truth, no matter the obstacles or how high the positions' involved. Tens of thousands join pro-Palestinian march over Sydney Harbour Bridge
Assange among marchers • Protesters chant 'ceasefire now' and 'free Palestine' SYDNEY: Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters including WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, closing the world famous landmark. Assange, who returned to Australia last year after his release from a high-security British prison, was pictured surrounded by family and marching alongside former Australian foreign minister and New South Wales premier Bob Carr. France, Britain and Canada have in recent weeks voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognize a Palestinian state as international concern and criticism have grown over malnutrition in Gaza. Australia has called for an end to the war in Gaza but has so far stopped short of a decision to recognize a Palestinian state. But in a joint statement with more than a dozen other nations on Tuesday it expressed the 'willingness or the positive consideration... to recognize the state of Palestine as an essential step towards the two-State solution'. The pro-Palestinian crowd braved heavy winds and rain to march across the bridge, chanting 'ceasefire now' and 'free Palestine'. New South Wales police said it had deployed hundreds of extra staff across Sydney for the march. Mehreen Faruqi, the New South Wales senator for the left-wing Greens party, told the crowd gathered at central Sydney's Lang Park that the march would 'make history'. She called for the 'harshest sanctions on Zionist entity', accusing its forces of 'massacring' Gazans, and criticized New South Wales premier Chris Minns for saying the protest should not go ahead. 'Enough is enough,' said Doug, a man in his 60s with a shock of white hair. 'When people from all over the world gather together and speak up, then evil can be overcome.' New South Wales police said up to 90,000 people had attended, far more than expected. The protest organizer, Palestine Action Group Sydney, said in a Facebook post as many as 300,000 people may have marched. New South Wales police and the state's premier last week tried to block the march from taking place on the bridge, a city landmark and transport thoroughfare, saying the route could cause safety hazards and transport disruption. Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Peter McKenna said more than a thousand police were deployed and the size of the crowd had led to fears of a crush. 'No one was hurt,' he told a press conference. Finance Minister Fassam resigns
Mukhaizeem becomes acting Finance Minister • Gaza fundraising campaign nets KD 2m KUWAIT: An Amiri decree was issued on Monday accepting the resignation of Finance Minister Noura Al-Fassam and appointing Minister of Electricity and Water Dr Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeem as Acting Finance Minister. Fassam was appointed as minister of finance and minister of state for economic affairs and investment in August 2024, replacing Anwar Al-Mudhaf who had also resigned. No reason was given for her sudden resignation. Before her appointment in the Cabinet, Fassam had experience of more than two decades in official and private economic posts including stints with the Kuwait Investment Authority, National Bank of Kuwait and Boubyan Bank. Under her short tenure, Kuwait issued its first public debt law in several years allowing the state to borrow KD 30 billion over the next half century. Also, under Fassam, Kuwait issued a law imposing a 15 percent tax on profits of multinational enterprises which envisages to collect some KD 250 million of taxes annually. Also, several months ago, a decree was issued allowing the government to raise charges on public services, replacing a law that was issued in 1992 banning the government from raising public charges without the prior approval of the national assembly. Kuwait has posted a budget deficit almost every year since 2015 because of the sharp drop in the price of oil, whose income contributes to about 90 percent of Kuwait's public revenues. In the meantime, another Amiri decree was issued Monday appointing five members to KIA board of directors which is headed by the finance minister. KIA, is Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund, and manages hundreds of billions of dollars of state surplus in overseas holdings. Unofficial reports put Kuwait's foreign assets at well over $1 trillion. In another development, an official campaign to raise funds for assisting Gaza has netted close to KD 2 million in its second day, official figures showed. The campaign ends on Tuesday. Since the start of the Zionist aggression on Gaza in October 2023, Kuwait has dispatched dozens of tons of material aid to Palestinians.
