NASA Satellite Glimpses Giant Volcano Peeking Above The Clouds of Mars
A spacecraft's-eye view over the landscapes of Mars has just given us a first-of-its-kind glimpse of the giant, ancient edifice known as Arsia Mons.
The NASA satellite Odyssey captured the enormous equatorial volcano as its tip peeked above the morning clouds of water ice – a common feature at this time of the Martian year, when the red planet is at its furthest point from the Sun on its slightly elliptical orbit.
Arsia Mons belongs to a volcanic complex known as the Tharsis Montes; three shield volcanoes very close together in the Tharsis region of Mars. Arsia Mons is the tallest of the three, standing at a towering height of nearly 20 kilometers (12 miles).
That's dramatically higher than any mountain on Earth, where the tallest peak above sea level (Mount Everest) stands 8.85 kilometers high and the tallest mountain, Mauna Kea, rises 9 kilometers above the sea floor. It also has around 30 times more volume than Earth's largest volcano, Mauna Loa – and it's not even the biggest volcano on Mars.
Its activity is thought to have lasted billions of years, peaking around 150 million years ago.
Odyssey usually has its cameras pointed down toward the surface of Mars. To obtain the new panorama, it had to rotate 90 degrees so that its camera pointed at the horizon. This angle is worth the effort: it allows scientists to make out layers and clouds in the thin Martian sky to better understand its atmospheric dynamics and processes.
Clouds form around Arsia Mons when expanding air rises up the slopes of the mountain, rapidly cooling, allowing ice crystals to form. At Mars's current position in its journey around the Sun, a belt of clouds forms around the equator known as the aphelion cloud belt.
Curiosity captured this phenomenon from the surface several years ago; the new Odyssey panorama gives us a spectacular view from above.
"We picked Arsia Mons hoping we would see the summit poke above the early morning clouds," says aerospace engineer Jonathon Hill of Arizona State University. "And it didn't disappoint."

O'Shaughnessy doesn't hold back on sharing her and Ride's intimate moments in the documentary. Since Ride was such a private person and the couple only had a few photos together, Sally director Cristina Costantini says they relied on filming recreations of actors that were 'all inspired directly from Tam's memory.' O'Shaughnessy, whose childhood friendship with Ride became romantic in 1985, says she hopes the film will help people understand their relationship and ultimately portray an American hero 'as who she really was.' 'We had a wonderful relationship from the time we were kids until we became lovers,' O'Shaughnessy says. 'I think it's something to be proud of.' Costantini praises O'Shaughnessy's vulnerability and humor as a narrator in the film, saying that her participation 'changed everything.' Yet elephants, whales, and other giants of the animal world tend to get cancer far less often than humans do. Now, researchers are learning why. In a 2015 study, scientists discovered that elephants carry 19 extra copies of a powerful cancer-stopping gene called TP53. This gene acts as a genetic safeguard, detecting DNA damage and triggering cell death in potentially cancerous cells. For elephants, this enhanced genetic armor likely explains why they enjoy such low rates of cancer despite their size. The researchers analyzed over 16,000 necropsy records and found that elephants are not alone. Many other species have evolved their own cancer resistance strategies. Some birds, bats, and even lizards showed remarkably low levels of cancer, while animals like ferrets and opossums had much higher rates. The study also shed light on how various traits influence cancer risk, and it isn't always related to how many copies of the cancer-stopping gene an animal has. Larger body mass was linked to a slightly higher chance of developing cancer, though not as strongly as expected. Longer gestation periods appeared to lower cancer risk, possibly because of enhanced cellular safeguards developed during extended fetal growth. However, the researchers found that animals in captivity did not show artificially high cancer rates due to living longer than they would in the wild. But what does this mean for human cancer research? Well, TP53 is already a key player in human cancer prevention and assessing cancer risks, but humans only have two copies of the gene. Learning how elephants and other species enhance their cancer defenses could lead to new cancer treatments that make human cells more resilient. The hope researchers have is that mimicking or boosting the effects of this cancer-stopping gene could help doctors develop therapies to reduce cancer incidence or slow its progression.
