Park Ji-Hyun And Choi Si-Won Monitor Erotica In ‘Forbidden Fairytale'

Forbes07-07-2025
Choi Is-won and Park Ji-hyun play co-workers in an office that monitors media decency standards.
Yoon Dan-bi has a dream. As the daughter of a children's book writer she dreams of creating stories for children. Like her dad's upbeat storybook characters she's optimistic about success, even if it takes time to materialize. To pay the bills she applies for a civil service job. That's how things quickly get R-rated in the Korean film Forbidden Fairytale, which premieres this week at the New York Asian Film Festival.
When Dan-bi, played by Park Ji-hyun, arrives at her new job, she learns she has been assigned to the Youth Protection Team at Korea's Communications Standards Commission. Her job is to look at various media and decide whether it violates the decency standards. Basically, she has to decide if it's porn? Okay, it's not what she thought she signed up for, but she tries to make it work.
Then she runs into Hwang Chang-seob, a publisher of adult romances, accidentally slamming her bike into his antique car. Chang-seob, played enthusiastically by Sung Dong-il, insists she pay for the damages to his beloved car, but it's more money than she can earn at her civil service job. In exchange she vows to write some erotica for him. How difficult can it be? It turns out to be embarrassingly difficult. Apparently, writing an adult romance is not something you can just google.
When writing Park's character Dan-bi uses her friends romantic adventures.
She turns to her fun girlfriends for anecdotes from their own romantic adventures and uses them to create stories that become very popular. Dan-bi asks a fellow employee to read her stories and provide objective feedback. Co-worker Kang Jeong-suk, played by Choi Si-won, confirms that her stories are well written and are effective adult romances. He can't be completely honest about the way they make him feel. After all, they are just co-workers.
What follows is the hilarious story of a writer finding her calling, which happens to be erotica, and two people who gradually fall in love while dispassionately monitoring and discussing adult entertainment. Both characters experience some amusingly embarrassing scenes as Dan-bi explores her true talent, yet Forbidden Fairytale is ultimately a sweet love story. Although Dan-bi and Jeong-suk are exposed to Internet porn all day, their relationship progresses at an endearingly slow pace.
Park, who previously appeared in Reborn Rich, Do You Like Brahms and Rookie Historian, creates an amiable character in Dan-bi. She's relatively innocent but not a prude. She's generally easy-going but able to defend herself.
Choi, a member of the k-pop group Super Junior, is wryly funny as Dan-bi's co-worker, a civil servant convinced he's immune to the provocations of adult entertainment. His subtle comedy skills have brightened dramas such as My Fellow Citizens, She Was Pretty and Love is For Suckers. Sung appears in a variety of Korean film and drama roles, including the recent dramas The Tale of Lady Ok, My Sweet Mobster and Curtain Call.
Forbidden Fairytale is directed by Lee Jong-seok, who also directed the film The Negotiation, starring Hyun Bin. The screenplay was written by Yoon Joo-hoon.
Forbidden Fairytale debuted in South Korea in January and after that opened in Vietnam. The film will have its U.S. debut at 6:15 pm July 13 at NYAFF and air on Viki.com on July 25. The 24th edition of the festival runs from July 11 to 27 across four NYC venues—Film at Lincoln Center, SVA Theatre, LOOK Cinemas W57, and the Korean Cultural Center in New York. The festival will feature 75 premieres—including eight world premieres—and 17 directorial debuts. This year's theme is "Cinema as Disruption" and Forbidden Fairytale offers an entertainingly different perspective on what constitutes a rom-com.

NY Film Festival Adds Bruce Springsteen Biopic ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere' as Spotlight Gala

The 2025 New York Film Festival has added the premiere of Scott Cooper's Bruce Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, starring Jeremy Allen White as the iconic musician, as its Spotlight Gala selection. The film, adapted from Warren Zanes' 2023 best-selling book of the same name, is set in the early '80s at a key time in Springsteen's career as he was recording the personal, acoustic songs that would make up his Nebraska album while also working on demos for Born in the U.S.A. and navigating his growing fame. Cooper directs from his own script. In addition to White, Deliver Me From Nowhere stars Jeremy Strong as Springsteen's longtime manager Jon Landau as well as Marc Maron, Stephen Graham, Gaby Hoffman, Paul Walter Hauser, David Krumholtz and Odessa Young. Cooper, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Scott Stuber produce, with Tracey London and Zanes executive producing. 20th Century Studios is set to release Deliver Me From Nowhere in theaters Oct. 24. 'The New York Film Festival has always felt like a spiritual home for the kind of cinema I believe in,' Cooper said in a statement. 'To now arrive with a film about Bruce Springsteen — an artist whose music shaped not just a country but my own sense of storytelling — is something I could never have imagined. Getting to know Bruce, to explore his world and his spirit, has been one of the most profound creative experiences of my life. To share that experience with New York audiences, in a city that defines artistic possibility, is both an honor and a responsibility I hold with deep gratitude.' NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim added, 'Taking its cue from the stark majesty of Bruce Springsteen's classic album Nebraska, Scott Cooper's Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere has an intimacy and immediacy that eludes most film biographies. Anchored by Jeremy Allen White's revelatory performance, this year's Spotlight Gala selection is a fitting tribute to a living legend.' The NYFF previously announced its currents lineup and main slate, including its opening-night film, Luca Guadagnino's Julia Roberts starrer After the Hunt, which also features Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield; centerpiece film Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother; and closing night film Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On? Additional highlights from the 34-film main slate include Jafar Panahi's Cannes' Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident, Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite, Noah Baumbach's George Clooney and Adam Sandler starrer Jay Kelly, Kelly Reichardt's The Mastermind, the Laura Poitras- and Mark Obenhaus-directed Seymour Hersh documentary Cover-Up, and Mary Bronstein's Rose Byrne and Conan O'Brien starrer If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. NYT ‘Connections' Hints For Monday, August 18: Today's Clues And Answers

Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Sunday's: Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the start of a new week! I'm delighted to be back with you for another Monday-Friday run of this here column. Perhaps you know the drill by now (and if not, welcome!). I like to kick off the Monday editions of this column with a fun, upbeat song that will hopefully at least get your toes tapping and a broader smile on your face. I had two in mind for today and couldn't decide which to go with, so I figured I'd just use them both and slide the second into the daily, column-ending recommendation slot. I don't know why this got in my head, but 'I'm in the Mood for Dancing' by The Nolans is a pretty great disco song: Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It's a fun hangout spot, and you're more than welcome to hang out with us. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Monday, August 18 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. POOL gave me pause when it came to guessing a group of CUE, SHOT, POCKET and BREAK. That made the pool/billiards-related group seem like a red herring. Sure enough, I realized that CUE went with NOD, PROMPT and SIGNAL, and that got me the yellows. The "watch" words were straightforward too. A little surprised those were the purples! My grandfather was in the Black Watch, so this felt like a nice little opportunity to tip my hat to him with the hint. Anyway, at that point the blues became clear (I wasn't kidding with that hint). The greens were evident too. I'm starting to think the NYT is going a little easy on us before tomorrow, which is game #800. I'm nervously anticipating that one. Anyway, my streak is now up to 171.
