House preparations for impeachment trial to continue amid reconciliation talk

GMA Network21-05-2025

'We will pursue it with the same eagerness, same vigor as before,' Zamora said.
The House prosecution panel will prepare for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte with the "same vigor and eagerness" as before President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said he was open to reconciliation with the Duterte family.
San Juan Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora, a member of the House prosecution panel, made the remark amid fears that the statement on reconciliation might affect the prosecution of the Vice President in the impeachment trial.
'If there are charges against the vice president such as the impeachment case, I believe that he's open to having that, having the impeachment proceedings go through. But I think it's just natural for him to be polite,' Zamora told reporters.
But Zamora said their level of preparations has not changed.
'We will pursue it with the same eagerness, same vigor as before,' Zamora said.
Zamora said that the stand of the members of the House of Representatives who signed the impeachment complaint remained.
'We have to remember that more than 200 plus congressmen signed it. And I would like to believe that these congressmen thought about their signatures on the impeachment," Zamora said.
"For example, there was Congressman Rufus Rodriguez who spoke before all of us and talked about different scenarios that could be had. So I would like to think that congressmen will stand by their signatures and see the proceedings through," she added.
"As for us prosecutors, we will always stand by our job and we will do our best to prosecute the case. We are here. I said before that we are doing this para sa bayan kaya dapat naming ipagpatuloy ito,' Zamora said.
The House Prosecution Panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will resume their weekly meetings this week in preparation for the trial.
Bayan Muna chairperson Atty. Neri Colmenares, one of the lawyers in one of the complaints in the impeachment, said the president's softer stance sent a dangerous message.
"This sends a dangerous signal that accountability is negotiable under his administration, a betrayal of the people's demand for justice," Colmenares said.
Zamora also said that the impeachment was not a factor in the defeat of several candidates in Eleksyon 2025.
'For me, Mindanao is really the base of the Dutertes. They will always get a lot of support for their candidates, meaning the Duterten candidates. So I would think that it's not surprising if the Alyansa candidates did not get a lot of votes there," Zamora said.
"But I want to make it clear also that support for the impeachment does not mean or did not spell loss for any Alyansa or congressional candidates who supported the impeachment. We saw there were Alyansa candidates who won, there were Liberal candidates who won, and in the congressional race, majority of those who supported the impeachment won as well,' she added.
Zamora said that the House Prosecution Panel will do their best in the impeachment trial even if there is a leadership change in the House of Representatives.
But Zamora added she continues to support House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
'I will always support our Speaker Martin so I don't know about the other names that have been floating around,' Zamora said.
Zamora also mentioned that there is a manifesto of support for Marcos and for Romualdez. —NB, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara Duterte back in PH after visit to Qatar, the Netherlands

Vice President Sara Duterte on Thursday returned to the Philippines after her recent visit to Qatar and the Netherlands. According to the Office of the Vice President, she arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 7:40 p.m. 'The Vice President is expected to address relevant matters in the coming days,' the Office of the Vice President said in a statement. During her stay in the Netherlands, the Vice President visited her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who was arrested and brought to The Hague to face trial for alleged crimes against humanity in connection with his administration's war on drugs. The Vice President also attended several activities with the Filipino community during her stay in Qatar. She was impeached by the House of Representatives in February. However, the Senate postponed the reading of the impeachment complaints from June 2 to June 11. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

Comelec reports fewer vote-buying incidents on election day

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has received fewer reports of vote-buying and vote-selling for Eleksyon 2025. According to the Comelec Commitee on Kontra Bigay (CKB), a total of 1,126 incidents of vote-buying and vote-selling were reported to the poll body for the May elections as of June 5 — fewer than the 1,200 reported during the 2022 national elections. Of the figures, 677 were related to vote-buying and vote-selling, and 227 were linked to abuse of state resources (ASR). The regions with the highest number of complaints were Regions III, IV-A, NCR, V, and I. Commissioner Ernesto Maceda Jr., chairperson of CKB, attributed the reduced illegal activities to the increasing public awareness, enforcement visibility, and a growing fear of consequences among the Eleksyon 2025 bets. 'Compared to previous elections, bumaba ang incidents, notwithstanding the number of reporting channels, notwithstanding the higher coverage. Nonetheless, hindi nahigitan ang previous local and national elections. We will take that as a win,' Maceda Jr. told reporters. (Compared to previous elections, there were fewer incidents, notwithstanding the number of reporting channels, notwithstanding the higher coverage.) 'Mas maraming tao ang nagsusumbong ngayon. Mas alam natin ang karapatan natin. Mas maganda ang media coverage. Mas maraming tao ang maybe they realized mali pala ang ginagawa nila. So kahit ito ay isang systemic matter that is hard to eradicate, the people itself, have said no,' he added. (More people are lodging complaints. We are now more aware of our rights and there is improved media coverage. Many candidates may have realized this is wrong and rejected it despite being a systemic matter.) In February, the Comelec said it will impose stricter measures to curb vote-buying, vote-selling and prevent the ASR for the May elections as it relaunched the committee mandated to address vote-buying and vote-selling. It also partnered with e-wallet applications such as GCash and Paymaya to address vote-buying via digital transactions. ASR refers to the misuse of government resources, whether material, human, coercive, regulatory, budgetary, media-related, or legislative, for electoral advantage. This usually includes the use of government facilities and vehicles for campaign-related activity but Maceda said the Comelec will also presume ASR is committed if the disbursement of aid or subsidies came with campaign materials or with candidates and their family. Also constituted as ASR are the use of government-funded media platforms to promote a candidate, the unjustified revocation or selective granting of government assistance during the campaign period and the sudden surge in hiring of job orders or contract-based orders when engaged in partisan electoral activities. —Sundy Mae Locus/LDF, GMA Integrated News For more Eleksyon 2025 related content and updates, visit GMA News Online's Eleksyon 2025 microsite.

Comelec to Duterte Youth Nominee: Explain use of different surname

The law department of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to issue a motu proprio show-cause order (SCO) against the first nominee of the Duterte Youth for allegedly using a different surname on her Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination (CONA) for Eleksyon 2025. Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said the Law Department will direct Drixie Mae Cardema to answer allegations that she used a different family name for her CONA. Reports on social media alleged that the full name of the Duterte Youth nominee was Drixie Mae Suarez and not Cardema. 'Ang Law Department namin ay kumilos na sa allegations and any moment from now, ang nominee ng Duterte Youth ay maaaring makatanggap ng SCO dahil sa allegations ng paggamit ng ibang family name,' Garcia said. (The Comelec Law Department is now taking action and the DY nominee may receive the SCO.) 'Maganda yun para kahit paano mapasagot ang naturang first nominee dahil napaka-unfair din naman sa kanya na inaakusahan sya ng kung ano-ano sa social media,' he said. (This will give the nominee a chance to explain the accusations against her.) Garcia clarified the case will not affect Drixie's nomination and possible proclamation as no formal petition was filed for the cancellation of her nomination. 'Ang isang kandidato pag nag-submit sa Comelec, ang lahat ng sina-submit nya katulad ng certificate of candidacy ay under oath. Pinanumpaan yan at therefore, kapag hindi ka nagsabi ng totoo, perjury yan and election offense. Kaya gusto natin alamin din, kaya ang kumikilos ng motu proprio ay ang Law Department,' he said. (When candidates submit their candidacies, their documents are submitted under oath. Therefore, lying on these documents may be considered perjury or an election offense. That's why there is an investigation.) 'Technically, wala pong effect whatsoever sa nomination ng naturang number one nominee,' he added. (Technically, this will not affect her nomination.) It can be recalled that the Duterte Youth ranked second in the party-list race for Eleksyon 2025, garnering 2.3 million votes. However, the Comelec, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, postponed their proclamation due to their pending cases. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
