Philippine president calls for all Cabinet secretaries to resign after election setbacks
Marcos, the 67-year-old son of a late Philippine dictator overthrown in 1986, won the presidency in the deeply divided Southeast Asian country by a landslide in 2022 in a stunning political comeback as he made a steadfast call for national unity. But his equally popular vice presidential running mate, Sara Duterte, later broke from him in a falling out that has sparked intense political discord.
With support from treaty ally the United States and other friendly countries, Marcos emerged as the most vocal critic of China 's growing aggression in the disputed South China Sea while contending with an array of longstanding domestic issues, including inflation — and delayed fulfillment of a campaign promise to bring down the price of rice — as well as many reports of kidnappings and other crimes.
'This is not business as usual,' Marcos was cited as saying in a government statement. 'The people have spoken and they expect results — not politics, not excuses. We hear them and we will act.'
Marcos called for the 'courtesy resignation of all Cabinet secretaries in a decisive move to recalibrate his administration following the results of the recent elections,' the government statement said.
'The request for courtesy resignations is aimed at giving the president the elbow room to evaluate the performance of each department and determine who will continue to serve in line with his administration's recalibrated priorities,' the government said.
At least 21 Cabinet secretaries led by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin either immediately submitted their resignations or expressed their readiness to do so.
'This is not about personalities — it's about performance, alignment and urgency,' Marcos said. 'Those who have delivered and continue to deliver will be recognized. But we cannot afford to be complacent. The time for comfort zones is over.'
Government services will remain uninterrupted during the transition, the government said, adding that 'with this bold reset, the Marcos administration signals a new phase — sharper, faster and fully focused on the people's most pressing needs.'
Five out of the 12 Senate seats contested in the mid-term elections were won by allies of Sara Duterte or her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who has been arrested and detained by the International Criminal Court in The Hague in the Netherlands. The elder Duterte, a staunch critic of Marcos, was accused of committing crimes against humanity over a brutal anti-drugs crackdown he launched that left thousands of mostly poor suspects dead.
Marcos-endorsed senatorial candidates won five Senate seats while two other seats were unexpectedly won by two liberal democrats associated with the late former President Benigno Aquino III, whose family has long been at odds with the Marcoses.
Voting for half of the 24-member Senate is crucial because the government body will hold an impeachment trial for Sara Duterte in July over an array of criminal allegations, including corruption and a public threat to assassinate Marcos, his wife and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. She made those threats in an online news conference in November but later issued a vague denial that she wanted the president killed.
Sara Duterte is facing a separate criminal complaint for her threats against the Marcoses and Romualdez.
Most of the seats in the House were won by candidates allied with Marcos and his cousin, Romualdez, in the May 12 elections, which many saw as a preview to the presidential elections scheduled for 2028.

China, Pakistan set upgraded CPEC as top priority during strategic dialogue in Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: China and Pakistan on Thursday said they would prioritize 'high-quality' cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), unveiling plans for an upgraded version of the multibillion-dollar flagship Belt and Road project. The CPEC infrastructure program was launched in 2015 and includes energy projects, highways, railways and the development of the Gwadar Port on the Arabian Sea, aimed at improving connectivity between western China and the Indian Ocean while boosting Pakistan's infrastructure and economy. 'The two sides agree that the current priority for China-Pakistan cooperation is high-quality CPEC cooperation and build an upgraded version of CPEC,' Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters during a joint press conference with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar after they held strategic talks in Islamabad, covering trade, security, counterterrorism and preparations for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to China later this month. 'We will build on our past achievements to build a growth corridor, a livelihood enhancing corridor, an innovation corridor, a green corridor and an open corridor to promote greater synergy between the five corridors with Pakistan's development planning.' Wang said China would also deepen cooperation in industry, agriculture and mining to improve welfare and boost Pakistan's ability for self-sustained development. 'We will also jointly support the development and operation of the Gwadar Port and promote the KKH realignment project in an orderly manner and we welcome third-party participation in ML1 project,' the Chinese foreign minister added. He was referring to upgrading the Karakoram Highway, the main road link between Pakistan and China through the Himalayas, and the Main Line-1 railway project, a massive plan to upgrade Pakistan's Karachi–Peshawar railway line, the backbone of the country's rail network. Wang also praised Pakistan's counterterrorism campaign: 'China firmly believes that Pakistan's counterterrorism efforts will help secure victory, and Pakistan will effectively protect the safety and security of Chinese personnel, projects and institutions.' Both sides also vowed to 'deepen counterterrorism and security cooperation and enhance regional coordination.' Speaking at the joint press conference, Dar welcomed China's vision for expanding cooperation in trade, investment and people-to-people ties under 'CPEC 2.0,' which would focus on industrial zones, green energy and agricultural modernization. The Pakistani leader confirmed that PM Sharif would travel to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of Heads of State Summit, scheduled to be held from Aug. 31-Sept. 1. He will also meet the top Chinese leadership, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. A Pakistan-China business-to-business investment conference would also be organized during Sharif's visit, Dar added.

Indonesia deputy minister arrested as part of anti-graft probe, agency says
Indonesia's anti graft agency has arrested the country's deputy manpower minister and 13 other people in connection with an investigation into alleged extortion, the agency said on Thursday. Deputy minister Immanuel Ebenezer, a member of President Prabowo Subianto's party Gerindra, became the first member of Prabowo's cabinet to be arrested for graft. Prabowo, who was sworn in last October, has campaigned against corruption in and out of his government. Fitroh Rohcahyanto, the deputy head of Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission, told Reuters that Immanuel's arrest was related to an investigation into allegations of irregularities in the ministry's issue of safety permits. He provided no other details. It was not clear if the deputy minister has been charged with any offence. Reuters was not immediately able to contact Immanuel's lawyer. A spokesperson for the agency said another 13 people had also been taken into custody in connection with the case. Yassierli, Indonesia's manpower minister who goes by one name like many Indonesians, told reporters on Thursday that Immanuel signed a document stating his willingness to resign if he is proven guilty, vowing improvements on safety permit issuance and calling the case 'a huge blow' to the ministry. Immanuel would be immediately replaced if found guilty, said Prasetyo Hadi, a presidential spokesperson. Last year, Indonesia was ranked at 99 out of 180 countries on global graft watchdog Transparency International's corruption perception index.

Zelenskyy tests new missile, rejects Chinese security role, seeks US help on EU path
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that his country had successfully tested a long-range cruise missile capable of striking targets up to 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles), and that mass production could begin by February. 'The missile has undergone successful tests. It is currently our most successful missile – it can fly 3,000 kilometres, which is significant,' Zelenskyy told reporters. Zelenskyy also rejected any role for China in guaranteeing Ukraine's security following Russia's invasion, citing Beijing's alleged support for Moscow. 'First, China did not help us stop this war from the start. Second, China assisted Russia by opening its drone market… We do not need guarantors who do not help Ukraine and did not help Ukraine at the time when we really needed it,' he said. In addition, Zelenskyy said he had asked US President Donald Trump to pressure Hungary to unblock Ukraine's negotiations with the European Union. 'I asked President Trump that Budapest should not block our accession to the European Union. President Trump promised that his team would work on this,' he said.
