Gorakhpur: In a chilling incident, a youth barged into a house in Gorakhpur's Civil Lines area and opened fire at his girlfriend and her teenage younger sister before attempting to take his own life. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Cantonment area.
DM, SSP and other officials visited the victim's house.
SSP Gaurav Grover said, "
Mandeep Yadav
, 25, a resident of Khadihani village in Azamgarh, a distant relative, reached the girl's house at Civil Lines around 1pm on Friday, armed with a country-made pistol. He confronted 22-year-old Pooja, who reportedly rejected his marriage proposal. Enraged, Mandeep shot her."
"As her younger sister Nancy tried to intervene, he shot her too in the abdomen. Following the attack, Mandeep stepped out and shot himself in the chest near the entrance," the SSP added.
Hearing gunshots, the girls' mother, who was in another room, rushed in to find all three lying in a pool of blood. Neighbours gathered soon after and alerted the police. The victims were first taken to the district hospital and later referred to BRD Medical College.
The girls' father, junior assistant in the agriculture department, had died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SSP said that police has not received and written complaint from the family so far.

Telangana high court quashes 2019 case against CM, gives appearance exemption in 2021 case

Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana high court on Monday quashed a criminal case filed in 2019 against chief minister A Revanth Reddy for allegedly violating the model code of conduct (MCC) during the Huzurnagar assembly by-election. The case (FIR No. 267/2019) was registered at Garidepally police station against Revanth, then a Congress MP, and N Uttam Kumar Reddy, also a Congress MP at the time. They were accused of holding a meeting in Ponugodu mandal on Oct 19, 2019, without prior permission from election officials. The police later filed a chargesheet (No. 403/2023). The court held that violations of the MCC alone are not legally maintainable as criminal offences unless there is proof of intentional disobedience. Since the chargesheet lacked such evidence, the case was quashed. However, the court directed that he must appear whenever specifically required. That case stems from FIR No. 211/2021, registered at Kamalapur police station in Warangal district. Revanth, listed as accused No. 7 along with six other Congress leaders, was charged under section 188 IPC and section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act. Police alleged that during a meeting on Oct 24, 2021, attended by around 2,500 party workers, the accused violated Covid-19 restrictions and the MCC by exceeding the permitted limit of 1,000 participants. The high court has issued notices to the state govt and the complainant in the 2021 case, asking them to file their responses by Sept 9, 2025. Towards eradicating human trafficking in India: A focus on West Bengal

In the past week, two major human trafficking attempts have been foiled in our region — the first involved rescuing 56 young women from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station near Siliguri in Darjeeling district. The other involved rescuing 34 young women from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus, in Siliguri. In both cases, the victims are young, vulnerable girls from economically and socially marginalised sections, and hail from remote rural villages of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts, mostly from the tea gardens. In the first instance, the women were promised jobs in Bengaluru; however, they were being taken to Patna when they were rescued. In the second case, the women were being transported to Jharkhand by bus when the rescue took place. In both cases, the traffickers claimed that their final destination was the garment factories of Tamil Nadu. Contrast this with the fact that since 2019, 143 workers from West Bengal, including 60 children, have been rescued from bonded labour in gold manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu. Many such instances of vulnerable people from West Bengal, particularly from the Darjeeling hills, Terai and the Dooars region, being lured by human traffickers are coming to light. What is worrisome is that, unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon. A cursory look at the data from 2018 to 2022, as reported in Parliament in April this year, reveals: 2,278 cases in 2018, 2,208 in 2019, 1,714 in 2020, 2,189 in 2021, and 2,250 in 2022. The noticeable dip in 2020 may be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic, which impacted both mobility and law enforcement operations. However, the numbers indicate that trafficking continues to be a widespread concern across the country. One of the most affected states during this period has been West Bengal. Its location along the India-Nepal-Bhutan-Bangladesh border, particularly in districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, North and South Dinajpur, Raiganj, Malda, North and South 24 Parganas, and Murshidabad, makes it especially vulnerable to cross-border trafficking. West Bengal, sadly, serves as both a destination and a transit point where trafficked individuals are usually forced into labour or sex work.
