Black History Month: COMU highlights works by black female artists

Yahoo12-02-2025

COLUMBUS, Ga. () — The Columbus Museum, rebranded as COMU, reopened in spring 2024. More than six months into its new life, it took time to highlight works by black female artists, in time for Black History Month and the International Week of Black Women in the Arts.
While COMU hosts a variety of works, it is home to pieces from critically acclaimed black female artists, many with local ties.
'We also have artists from Columbus, Georgia, who have made international acclaim, the first of which is Alma Thomas, who was born here in Columbus, Georgia,' said Kristen Hudson, COMU's director of marketing and public relations.

In 1972, Thomas became the first solo female artist featured at New York's Whitney Museum.
COMU museum currently has pieces like 'Color Etude' (1966) and 'Spanish Dancers'(1960-78) as well as untitled works from Thomas on display.
'We're so proud to be able to showcase her work here at the Columbus Museum. She now has works on view in the White House collection,' Hudson added.

Work by Columbus-born and New York City-based Amy Sherald is also on display.
Sherald's work is also currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in San Francisco. It highlights the 'American Sublime,' according to the SFMOMA website.
COMU established it's Fund for African American Art in 2014. It is supported by the Amy Sherald Society, which helps the museum acquire works by African American artists and choose which pieces will become part of the permanent collection.
Earlier this year, COMU was named number one on USA Today's list of top 10 best new museums. COMU representatives say thousands of guests have come to check out the revamped museum since it's grand reopening in spring 2024.

Gabby Thomas calls out ‘weirdo' heckler over ‘bragging' social media post

Olympic track and field gold medalist Gabby Thomas put a male spectator on blast after she said he yelled personal insults at her and followed her around at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia on Sunday. Thomas explained that she publicly called out the man because she saw him 'bragging' about heckling her on social media. 'I made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win,' the man wrote under the username 'Mr 100K a day' in response to a recap post by Thomas, who finished fourth in the 100-meter race at the Grand Slam Track meet, and second place in the 200-meter sprint on Sunday. 3 Gabby Thomas of the United States competes in the women's 200m on Day 1 of Grand Slam Track at Franklin Field in on May 31, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 'This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults,' Thomas, 28, wrote in response. 'Anybody who enables him online is gross.' Thomas called the man 'a weirdo' while replying to fans. Thomas added that she 'wasn't even going to tweet about it but since he's bragging.' 'Honestly the heckling is tolerable, it's following me around the stadium that's wild,' she wrote in another post. The man denied Thomas' claims and called her a liar in a YouTube video posted Monday under the same username — adding that she tweeted about him 'for sympathy.' He also said he does not like Thomas and called her 'a Karen.' 3 Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (USA), left, defeats Gabby Thomas (USA) to win the women's 200m, 21.99 to 22.10, during the Grand Slam Track Philadelphia at Franklin Field on May 31, 2025. Kirby Lee-Imagn Images In the 11-minute video, he showed clips of him heckling Thomas and saying he wanted Melissa Jefferson-Wooden to win the 200m race. 'Gabby Thomas is scared I see it in her eyes,' the man yelled, before calling her a 'choke artist.' The man was also heard yelling, 'Melissa got married this year, got a Black husband, Gabby got a white guy,' referring to Thomas' fiancé, Spencer McManes, who is white. 3 Olympian Gabby Thomas and Spencer McManes are seen arriving to the Carolina Herrera fashion show during New York Fashion Week on September 9, 2024 in New York City. GC Images At one point, he said Thomas 'walked past me and she spoke to me and she said, 'Hey what're you doing here? You're just a heckler… She laughed, smiled and kept walking. That was the last time I saw Gabby.' Earlier this year, Thomas shared a PSA on TikTok and explained that she feared she was being stalked by a group of middle-aged men, who allegedly followed her to and from multiple cities in the United States recently. The U.S. sprinter made her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut in the magazine's 2025 issue in May.

Farmer Wants A Wife fans enraged over 'disrespectful' move: 'Game over'

Farmer Wants A Wife viewers have been left fuming after Tuesday night's episode made it crystal clear that Farmer Thomas has no intentions of trying to find love with two of his final three ladies. Fans would have heard Thomas tell Clarette on Monday night that he was on the show for her, and during Tuesday night's episode, he was acting as though he didn't also have Rachael, who has been on the show since the beginning, and 'intruder' Laura, back at the farm. Thomas and Clarette enjoyed a very romantic date, which involved discovering beachside caves, a swim, and a picnic under the stars, with the farmer tracking down several of the teacher's nearest and dearest to share a video message for them. Understandably, Clarette, who is originally from the UK, became quite emotional seeing her loved ones onscreen, telling Thomas, "You've got my heart, so look after it, please. And I'll do the same with yours." "Cheers to the most amazing date ever, and to many more to come," Thomas said. In a preview for next week, we see Thomas being forced to finally tell Rachael and Laura that he's chosen Clarette, as well as a short clip of him telling Clarette he's chosen her. Viewers were left confused by the fact that most of the farmers on the show play it a little more coy about who they might choose at the end of the show, and yet, Thomas has been so clear for the last couple of episodes that it was always going to be Clarette. While other farmers chose to leave the show early once they found their person, Thomas appears to be stringing the other two women along for no real reason. "WHY was Thomas allowed to continue on the show when he clearly had connected with Clarette... hardly fair for the other girls!" one viewer questioned. "He never gave any of the other girls a chance - she just shoved herself on him and he was like a love sick puppy - not fair on the others," another agreed. "This guy has been the most disrespectful and dishonest towards the other ladies," a third said. "He's been into Clarette the entire time, not willing to explore any other connections, and he's been keeping the others tagging along for nothing. "Two of the previous farmers who experienced the same, were men enough to send the others home and walk away with the one they chose early into the sunset," they added. He is a child-man and I don't think he even remembers there are others there too." "They obviously don't care that they're being strung along." "He wasted the other girls time," one annoyed viewer wrote. "If he's in love with her well he needs to go until the other girls and stop wasting their time," yet another added. "Game over then," one person wrote. "Such a pity he wasn't honest with his other ladies weeks ago. Once Claire left it became a one horse race."
