Gun-wielding 79-year-old man shot dead by cops outside NYC police precinct: sources
The elderly man, who was reported missing out of Nassau County, was killed around 6:40 p.m. after he exited a white Lexus and refused to drop his firearm in front of the NYPD's 111th Precinct in Bayside, police and sources said.
The suspect approached the station house and started talking with a police officer assigned as precinct security when the alleged perp pulled a gun and pointed it at the cop, Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said during a press conference Tuesday night.
The officer demanded the suspect drop the weapon and called for backup.
Four cops then opened fire on the suspect after he repeatedly ignored orders and continued to point the gun at the officer, Rivera said.
The 79-year-old was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
A loaded Cobra .38 special firearm was recovered at the scene.
The suspect's last known address was in Great Neck, sources said.
An alert for his vehicle was issued by Nassau police earlier in the day for a missing person, according to sources.
It's unclear what the motive was behind the suspect's actions, but the series of events were 'pretty instantaneous,' Rivera said.
No officers were injured during the round of gunfire.
'Our officers are confronted with extremely dangerous and unpredictable situations and they attempted to de-escalate this situation multiple times,' Rivera said.
'This is the second time in 12 hours that our officers have been confronted by armed individuals,' he added.
Early Tuesday morning, a violent ex-con injured an NYPD officer in an exchange of gunfire during a four-hour standoff while trying to execute a search warrant Tuesday morning on the Lower East Side.
The suspect in that case, identified as 34-year-old Edwin Rivera, was also shot and wounded during the tense scene at Vladeck Houses complex just before 5 a.m., police said.

Alleged moped thieves terrorize riders in Queens, police say
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A trio of alleged moped thieves has been terrorizing riders in Queens for the past few months, police said Tuesday. The suspects have allegedly threatened riders with a knife before taking their mopeds in a spate of incidents from June to August, according to the NYPD. The spree started when a 27-year-old man riding a moped was hit in the head with a chain and robbed at knifepoint on 107th Street at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, police said. EMS staff treated the victim at the scene for minor injuries. The trio struck twice on Aug. 7 when they ambushed moped riders on Linden Boulevard and then again on 103rd Street and Rockway Boulevard. The suspects allegedly took the victims' keys and rode off on the stolen mopeds, police said. The men allegedly stole two more mopeds on July 20 near 101st Street and Drew Avenue and 122nd Street and Liberty Avenue, cops said. There were no injuries in the July and August incidents. Police are still searching for the suspects. Slain NYPD officer's wife gives birth to another son: 'Their father's legacy of service'
The wife of a slain New York City Police Department officer killed in a mass shooting at a Manhattan high-rise last month gave birth to the couple's third child this week, the agency announced. 'Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world,' NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote in a Monday, Aug. 18 post on X. 'Last night, Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham.' A nearly four-year NYPD veteran, Islam was killed in a mass shooting on July 28, in a skyscraper where he was working a paid security detail. At the time of his death, in a statement on the precinct's social media, city leaders called Islam 'a husband, father, and dedicated public servant' and said he was survived by two young sons and his wife, who had been expecting the couple's third child. In the commissioner's birth announcement on Monday, she wrote the newborn boy joins two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan.
